That doesn't mean that hes worth $18million a year. I'm sorry, I wanted Zito, but for that price fuck him and his scumbag agent. I guess we should now turn out attention to Mulder, and I think Omar has a thing for Vasquez?
The Mets were apparently willing to go for 7 years for Zito, per this article: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2006/12/28/SPzito28.DTL I hope it comes out what kind of money they were offering for those 7 years. If they were willing to do 7/15 but balked at 7/18 I'm going to be even more unhappy.
Holy cow, I wanted Zito on the Mets as much as the next guy but that kind of overpaying does more harm to a franchise than good. Plan B is now in effect..
The Mets won 97 games with a patchwork rotation last year. Nothing is a sure bet, but there comes a point that you have to say that a player simply isn't worth what it would take to get him.
I don't count on the NL being as bad as it was last year, but we'll see. When the alternative is sending young talent in order to get a pitcher you're probably going to have to pay big money as well, I'll be very interested to see what that point was with Zito.
I just hope Minaya has something better planned. As of right now this offseason has been more than dissappointing, it has just downright sucked. Let Bradford and Oliver go. Signed an over the hill Alou. Missed out on Suppan and Zito. And the starting rotation has yet to be addressed long term. But we sign El Duque and Glavine for another year. Oye....
I honestly think the plan is to let El Duque pitch until his arm falls off, and by then Petey should be back for the playoff push. Met fans are fickle, they don't want a panic trade, yet they don't have faith in the same prospects to produce at a Suppan/Lilly type level. If they can't do that, they are not good prospects.
I think you have to give the kid arms a shot, maybe the Mets regress a bit this year, I can live with that... we are a young team, one through 8, and all but in the very back of the bullpen. The starters need to be give n a chance to give it a go. If the job that Maine and Perez did on games 6 and 7 with all the pressure on is any indication they'll be good enough to be 4 and 5.
Better hope your mets hit more than they did last year because the SP and Bullpen are both much weaker this year. I don't even like the mets but I dont see why they didt pony up the money for zito.... huge loss for the mets here IMO.
I'm not worried yet. No reason to be. I expect Maine, Pelfrey,Perez, or Humber to step up big this season. Most likely will be Maine, as of now, he is our 3rd starter.
So it's settled. Zito for Milledge last July would have been a waste. Neither would be with the Mets right now.
Good thing the baseball season doesnt start in January. Of course, being a Yankees fan and winning almost every off-season, i guess the winter is the most important thing right?
I don't either. But the absolute stupidity of the Giants shouldn't be lost in this either. This is the deal that finally exposes Brian Sabean for the fraud that he is. I don't see how they can budget so much of their payroll for a good not great pitcher for the next 8 years. Not to mention their team is absolute garbage and nowhere near contending for anything.
