John McClain is a shill for the Texans, so of course he's going to root for a trade with a team that has the most draft capital to trade for Watson. He would love nothing more than to see the Jets send their entire 20 and 21 drafts for Watson. His opinion on the matter may be the least valuable one you can listen to.
Watson is a proven player. I think fans are going forgive and forget quickly of the picks the Jets give up when (If) the Jets start playing competitively to get closer to the playoffs or make it to the playoffs. There are lots of unknowns with Darnold and Wilson/Fields. Let’s not compare him to Cousins or a Winston. The guy is a proven player. If that is what Saleh and JD wants to do then so be it.
I totally disagree. If they don't trade him this year, his value will plummet. Houston isn't going to wait 2-3 more years to trade him. They need a new starting QB. They'll probably have the #1 pick next year, They'll take their new QB then. They will have zero leverage because they won't want to pay Watson with him sitting there and doing nothing and paying the new QB, and be hindered in building around him because so much of their cap is tied up with Watson. Most of the teams that have interest this year, will have moved on. They're not going to sit around waiting for a year in hopes that the Texans decide to trade him next year. Plus Watson will have sat for a year, will have rust, will be out of football shape, etc.
Watson didn't cause this mess. The Texans' owner and Easterby caused this mess. They are responsible, NOT Watson.
Again, I totally disagree. The Texans are who screwed up and damaged the relationship with Watson beyond repair. They don't have a 1st or 2nd round draft pick this year. They have a new HC and GM who aren't going to want to wait until next year to begin the rebuild. They're going to be pressuring McNair and Easterby to get a deal done so they can make plans to move forward. The Texans have little real leverage.
If I’m JD I’m calling the Texans bluff. We hold the 2nd pick and a bounty of other picks. We aren’t the ones with a disgruntled player who publicly wants out. If I’m JD I’d send Caserio a text “we would be interested in Watson if you are looking to move him. Give me a call if that is on the table”. Simple as that, put the ball in his court. If he calls you got him by the balls because you know they want Wilson. IF I’m that hypothetically happens and Caserio calls. I’d offer him Wilson + 34 and go from there.
None of that has anything to do with the leverage they have on Watson, who has a contractual obligation to them for four years. That is why he hasn’t made any public statements to inflame the situation — even he knows he needs them to trade him and he has no leverage to force his way out.
Texans have ZERO leverage. The only thing the Texans have is a player who will never play for them again. Imagine for a moment that the Dolphins are the ONLY team to offer the Texans anything, say their 3rd overall. That's it. One offer. What do the Texans do? They'll either ship Watson out for that #3, or they'll go into the 2021 with no QB. let me help ya, they'll take Miami's #3 and move on. Their only hope is to get teams competing against each other, b/c they don't have any leverage. They'll take the best offer, whatever it is, or isn't.
The Texans actually have the ultimate leverage. If they really dig their heels in Watson will not be able to play for anyone other than them for 5 years. Would it be smart of them to do so, and not get anything in a trade? Probably not, but they have the nuclear option, not Watson. The Texans would eventually recover as an organization, they'd just fine Watson to hell for not showing up and refusing to play. It would be more detrimental to Watson to not play football for 5 years in the middle of his prime than it would be for the Texans to not get any value for refusing to trade him.
Miami will def try to increase offer. They have multiple 1st rd picks in 2021 and can give 2022 picks.
Suppose the Miami picks all come down to Justin fields. If they trade to Miami, we get Wilson at #2. Which leaves them tua, fields or evan lance. Do they want that? I know some people would, but again this is on their evaluation and fields could even say no to them. After all Watson and fields share the same agent. Let them fall for Wilson.....this will be smoother for us getting Watson from there. Sent from my M2007J20CG using Tapatalk
Too much for a team in rebuild mode to leave themselves with no first rounder next year. Hoping Texans stick to their guns about not trading him.
That’s simply is not true. Unless you think Watson has zero value if they reject the third pick and there won’t be another team in the league to want Watson. Which is a ridiculous thing to believe. he’s one of the top QB’s in the league — every team without a proven franchisee QB wants Watson, it’s simply a matter of what it will cost them to get him. The offers for Watson will only go up in value the longer this drags on not down.
Not only that, his contract won’t simply expire in five years — he has five years of service to perform. If he sits out a year, that five years just starts the next year. And so on and so on.
Deshaun Watson thinks he's playing in the NBA. When was the last time you heard any player in the NFL say that he needed to have a say in the HC/GM search? I mean really? Yes, the Texans have handled this badly all around but the fact remains that Deshaun Watson signed a long-term contract with a lot of guarantees that he is effectively trying to weasel out of right now. Because he is the player and not the team he is getting a lot of sympathy - because little guys vs big guys. However the fact remains that when you sign a long-term guaranteed contract it generally is for better or worse. And yes, Jack Easterby is an abomination but that was likely true before the NFL reared it's ugly head and demanded him to tame it.
Stafford got traded for two first round picks because that's what the Lions demanded to take on Goff's contract. Period. There's no way Stafford goes for that much in any other context. This is something that most people missed in the initial reporting because the modern press is easily led around by the nose. And BTW I almost forgot: the two future firsts that the Lions got for Stafford are literally worth about a sixth of the value of the #2 overall.
i understand the fact that it takes more for them to take your over priced qb who is average at best. the rams hope those are low picks but who really knows. this is the nfl. and deshaun watson is worth more than all those players combined. its not just about what the texans will take, its also about what others will offer him. if the jets get deshaun watson for the 2 pick ill be ecstatic. it isnt happening though. its legitimately silly to assume that could ever in a million years happen. i think jd would be doing something amazing having it only cost 2 firsts whatever else after that, not named quinnen williams.
Why would you want to see Deshaun Watson, One Man Band in action? He's not winning anything here with a 2-14 roster minus the high picks that bad roster earned last year and will earn next year.
That's exactly what I said. Texans ONLY hope is to get teams to compete against each other. Because without that, Texans have nothing. The Texans are the only partner in any deal that HAS to make a deal happen. Jets don't, they can just draft Zack Wilson. Miami don't, they can just go with Tua. But Texans? They HAVE to get a trade done, even if they don't get all they hoped to get. Let me ask you this: Why aren't teams trying to trade for Mahomes? Because KC doesn't have to trade him, and the cost would be astronomical. KC can set the price, take it or leave it. But the Texans DO have to trade Watson regardless of how good or how bad the best/top offer is. That's their only hope to land another QB for the 2021 season. That's the difference. Texans have no leverage. By refusing to ever play there again, Deshawn killed any leverage they may have had. So the Jets don't have to make an offer that blows the Texans away. The Jets ONLY have to beat out the 2nd best offer, even if that's only half of what the Texans wanted.
