Tyson Campbell in the 2nd or Jaycee Horn at #23 are both options. I really like TC he’s an absolute freak and is definitely the best tackling corner in the draft.
Horn is easily the best corner in the draft as I see it. The dude stuck like glue to receivers all year. He bullied Seth Williams around and did pretty well against most of the SEC receivers. He's a must take at 23 if he falls but I doubt he will. Maybe it's the college connection but he reminds me a lot of Stephon Gilmore.
Mid round guy who won't run well but if you've watched Cal's defense the past couple years you know they're physical and tackle well. He might be a good cover 3 guy. Everytime they play the announcers are highlighting this kid. Former team MVP. I liked what I saw.
I’m personally pulling for Jaycee Horn at 23 - he can be the shut down CB the Jets absolutely need. If he’s there at 23 he should be the pick imo.
It's my understanding that the Jets will be playing primarily zone coverage, thus there is really no need for a "shut down" corner. In addition, that is also making the same mistake Mac made, drafting D high and not building around the QB. The D is already a good bit ahead of the offense. The offense has 3-4 players that will be starters two years from now. Both 1st round picks should be used on offense and the 2nd round pick should be as well.
Need to watch a whole lot more but purely based on raw ability 1.Surtain 2.Horn 3. Farley 4. Campbell 5. Stokes However for a cover 3, hard not to love Caleb Farley. Yes hes a tad stiffer w not quite the foot quickness of the other 2 but hes long, closes well, has some range over the top & freaky recovery speed. Think hes more of a playmaker than so a shut down type but certainly is gonna hold his own in the pure coverage dept.
A CB is a major need for this team regardless. I find it hard to believe all three of the Jets top picks will go offense. That’s not how a well balanced team is built. I do believe the draft will tilt offense - as you stated the defense is ahead of the offense in terms of talent - but remember Saleh is a defensive coach by trade. One of those top picks will most likely be a CB or EDGE. Now if by chance the a Jets happen to sign both of those positions in FA - and I mean legitimate starters not role players or the usual roster filler type B players - then there may be a chance of those top three picks going O. Im looking forward to FA and hopefully by this time next week after the initial signings we’ll all have a better idea of what the draft will really look like. I’m looking forward to more pared down versions of mock drafts.
Could also be a LB. Williamson is gone and Mosley has barely played since signing with us. Need some depth there too. Our D needs some pieces too. It's not exactly set at any position other than interior DL.
Yes, a #1 CB is a major need, but it shouldn't take priority over insuring that our QB succeeds. As things currently stand, the D is is MUCH better shape than the offense, so if JD is going to try to balance the two, then he's definitely going to have to have a draft or two that is heavily balanced towards the offense to try to even things out. JD may not use the first 3 picks on offense, and in fact, I'd be surprised if he does, especially since our new HC is a D guy. That's one of the major reasons why I didn't want the new HC to have a defensive background. IMO using the first 4-5 picks on offense is not only merited, it's the way the draft should be conducted if we want our QB, whomever it is, to have a real chance to succeed. We need help in every single position group on offense. At this point, at most, we have 4 keepers (in terms of starters) on offense: Becton, McGovern, Mims, & Crowder. On D we have Q. Williams, Fatukasi, John Franklin Myers, Mosley, Hall, Maye and maybe Davis. I disagree with the bold. IMO aside from prioritizing getting a QB and building around him, getting an OL to protect him and giving him weapons to work with, and getting your pass rush, it doesn't really matter how one builds the team as long as one winds up with a balanced roster. One can do a balanced draft every year, or have a draft that's heavily balanced towards the offense one year, and the next have one that's heavily balanced towards the D the next year. It all works out the same in the end. Actually, imo it's better to draft to the strength of the draft. This is mostly a very strong offensive draft early, and not that great for defense. I know that next year is going to be a much better draft for DEs//Edges, and it may be for CBs too. I'm hoping that most of the FA $s will go for the defense. I think JD should sign Thuney or another starting LG and a WR on offense (Samuel, Golloway, or Davis). On D I think he should sign a DE (Barrett, Lawson, Hendrickson or Okwara), a CB (Sherman or another CB, re-sign Poole or sign another slot CB), a LB who excels in pass coverage (Tyus Bowser, Jayon Brown, or Nicholas Morrow), and a SS.
James Wiggins FS 6' 205LBs Estimated draft position 4th-5th round Analysis: Depth at safety is something the jets should look at in the later rounds so in comes James Wiggins. A natural FS so would back up maye but a flexible secondary player. Fares well in zone coverage and also manning up in the slot as shown above. Not the best tackler but good enough and always seems to be around the ball and good at reading the QB. Could sub in for us as a nickel/dime back as well. His height/weight doesn't stand out but he's a freak athlete who's very strong. he benches 405, squats 675, has a 37 inch vertical and runs in the 4.40s. Can also return kicks and punts and play special teams. Would be a great pick up to the depth in our secondary in the 4th or 5th round. On a side note he's one of those "electric personalities" but in a good way. A guy out there just having fun. A good locker room guy to have. the type of player right up JDs alley
With Farleys back surgery we should be paying close attention with that early 2nd rounder if he happens to drop out of 1st.
