https://nypost.com/2021/03/03/nfl-free-agency-marcus-mayes-agent-slams-jets/ Seems we've been here once before. Not sure what the holdup is with Maye's contract but it wouldn't surprise me if the Jets let him walk after this year. The Johnsons are shellshocked over the Bell contract evidently. Oh well, the more things change....
My thinking is they are really high on the potential of Davis but he is nowhere near ready to be counted on this year. It makes sense to tag Maye regardless if that’s the case. Regardless they should get both on the field even if one isn’t a traditional box safety.
Maye has improved every year. While not on the level of Adams, Maye stepped it up another notch this year and deserves to be re-signed.
He has and does, but age makes it far from a sure thing. Tagging him for a year makes a lot of sense for the Jets, unfortunately for Maye.
Always thought Maye was the better safety between him and Adams. His ball skills were always superior to Adams. I like Davis but think he might be better at corner and not in the box. He and Maye can't play the same position.
I'm not keen, it seems to show a lack of loyalty tbh the lad has played well, he is coming up for his 2nd contract talks, he is a little older than ideal but I still can't believe they can't just give him a 3-year deal at whatever it works out as the fair price for his skill. 3 years at 33m, 20 guaranteed? or whatever I don't like the tag system tbh.
@Cman65 you maybe want drop this one in with the other older one mate https://forums.theganggreen.com/thr...ise-tag-marcus-maye.95327/page-2#post-4053256
Davis got embarrassed in coverage a few times last year if I recall and he's certainly too small in the box. He definitely a "willing tackler" though. Maybe he's athletic enough to move to nickle? White guy at corner......maybe the rarest of NFL player ......last one I remember was Jason Sehorn before he blew out his knee.
There is no way Maye is signing a 3 yr deal. That's likely the hangup. At this point in his career Maye wants a deal that will keep him safe past 30. Unfortunately nobody is safe past 30 any more with the rolling changes in the last two CBA's. The NFL is a young man's game now and unless you are a superstar your ability to control your destiny stops after your second contract - particularly if you are on the wrong side of 30 when the music stops. FWIW your proposed deal is probably what Maye is going to wind up with after he is franchised this year and signs a frontloaded 4 yr deal that is really a 2 year deal in disguise wherever he goes next. Then he's 31, no leverage on the back years of his next deal and unlikely to ever sign another big deal. That's what he's looking at and that's why the negotiations are dragging out.
It's agent talk. Call up a NY Post writer who is looking for a story and yell about how the team is being unfair to his client. Opening salvo of the free agent period. Don't take it seriously.
I think they are negotiating, just haven't made a lot of progress. Tagging him shows that they are serious about keeping him and are willing to pay him. Tagging him gives them time to work out a deal. His agent should STFU.
There are some very good safeties available in free agency. If we can get anything good in return I will help Maye pack his bags.
Yeah and Sehorn did it on a kickoff return against the Jets I believe on Monday night. He was never the same.
Really? Why say shit like this? Maye has been great for us, not some piece of trash like TJ and other money grabbing no effort twats
Maye needs to be made a priority and I think Brad is right regarding the contract hangup. His biggest issues his first couple of years were his ball skills which he improved drastically last year. In this defense he can return to playing center field, preventing big plays and not have to play all over the field to overcompensate for the loss of Adams in the box.
I thought that when I asked the initial question but then if it was a tag to then lead to concrete contract talks you wouldn't expect the agent to develop a loud mouth? Agents, the pariah of top-class sports, I would never give them my hard earned cash tbh
If you read my old posts I wanted to keep Adams until he started mouthing off. We don't need guys that don't want to play here.
it's his 1st payday but he's old in football years. he was a 24 year old rookie. now he's 28. the jets likely don't want to give him anymore then 3 years and he knows a 31 year old safety isn't going to get big money. this is his chance at a payday. A fair offer for him is 3 years 30 mil. if he doesn't take it the tag is 1 year 11 mil. I feel bad for him but not coming out of college until 24 really hurt him. if he came out at 22 he could have had a 5 year 55 million dollar deal
You could wait for him to mouth off first then, agents are just cunts Adams was all over everything mouthing off by himself, I have not seen Maye do that yet, I could be wrong though?
Jets need to do the right thing and sign MM, it will probably be cheaper than a FA. Bryce Hall is coming into his own, Ashtyn Davis is going to be much improved after being thrown into the fire last year. The last thing JD needs is another hole to fill with an inexperienced safety, or a more expensive one through FA. MM, Hall, and Davis, only leaves one spot in secondary to address.
