I think this is only true to a point, and we've seen numerous examples specifically with the Jets of players taking less elsewhere. From Antoine Winfield to Nnamdi Asomugha to Kirk Cousins to Anthony Barr, all 4 took less to play for a different team they thought gave them a better chance to win. Sure, you could argue that in the current age they are about money first, but since the Watson Likes NY rumors died down, we haven't heard much of anything about Allen Robinson to the Jets. I think we don't get much confirmation about it around the league because teams have agreements with talent agencies not to publicize offers made in confidence to avoid a black eye, so it's only usually made public when a player backs out of a deal like Winfield and Barr did, or when the player acts like a douche (Cousins) and publicizes it.
While true enough, how frequently do we see the bottom tier teams as the winners of free agency? The Washington FB Team, Browns, Dolphins, us, Jags, etc. I would agree that I generalized a bit too much and I think the league is changing a bit in that regard since the players are making so much money that a couple million here or there is negligible. But I do think Watson coming here only has influence over one big player this off-season in Allen Robinson to potentially take less money. And I think you generally agree that even if we get him, we still don't want to pile on high priced age 28-29 free agents anyways or else we're going to create a small window. If it ultimately doesn't become fruitful then Watson will be hitting the market anyways when it's time.
Its amusing the his camp has already said they would ok a trade to the Jets, Miami, or Carolina, but people like you keep calling the jets undesirable. Thing is he knows if he comes here, with a coach he like and a GM that everyone in the nfl thinks has a good future, then this place automatically becomes desirable to everyone else. Saleh and Douglas are both view to have bright futures. Add a top 5 QB and this becomes one of the most desirable teams.
and First of all, I don't think the premise of LA's post is extremely flawed. I think that both of you made some good points and both are valid perspectives. I'd really like to add Watson, but my own position lies in the middle of LA's and your post. While Watson is probably worth three 1st round picks and a 2nd, I'm not giving up our 2nd this year and then not have a pick before the 3rd round. Houston could take our two #1s this year, our #1 next year, and either Darnold, or our 2022 #2, or our 2023 #2. That's as high as I would go, and I don't think JD would go any higher, and may not even be willing to go that high. Even with our basically being screwed if Watson goes to Miami, I don't think I'd go any higher. I'd just stress to Houston that if Watson is traded to Miami, we're gonna take a QB (probably the one they want), and they're going to look like idiots trading Watson to Miami to get their #3 pick back. I'm getting to the point where I think I may just rather roll the dice on Fields or Wilson and have all of our picks to build around him.
Go ahead and post any existing link where Watson's "camp" says he wants to go to those 3 teams. Because the only thing I've read in any article since this whole thing started is "sources". That's not Watson's camp, that's an anonymous and possibly non-existent entity.
I disagree, most play for the money but if it's between multiple teams and the money is similar you will go to the more desirable team. Hence the overpay part. If it's close we would have to outbid a more desirable team financially.
Oh I definitely don't think we should to pile a bunch of vets in from FA, although tbh the trading of Watson turns this from a scrap and rebuild to a retool very quickly because the guy is not coming to a team that's starting over everywhere but his position, and that means spending some dough in FA. That's something I came to terms with when I started accepting the possibility of trading for him. The rebuild that Joe is trying to do right now won't come into its own until Watson is nearing the end of his current contract and he'll most likely be looking around wondering if he made a mistake.
Mostly what I'm reading on the Texans forum is they all want the Jets to be the trade partner because of the 2 pick. Some are making up some batshit crazy trades but others are more reasonable.
I see ur point. Then keep the Jamal stuff for us and package Sam and our #2. That's it. That may even be better than Tua and #3. All that chatter of Sam + our #2 + 2 or 3 more first rounds + Q is nonsense. We'd be competing against ourselves. Sam + #2.
Who knows? They may think Sam is better than a true rookie and use the #2 overall to trade down and draft the defensive starters they wanted.
Imagine being a Texans fan and finding out Sam is your new qb , the worst qb in the nfl, replacing a very popular top 5 qb . You think Sam looked bad with the weapons he had last yr, Houstons line is worst and after Fuller is gone there are no weapons. Plus if Sam is even remotely successful, you need to pay him 25 mil in 2022.
This. And if neither of them rise to the level necessary for JD to draft them #2 overall, then trade down a bit and take one of them later (or one of the other QBs). If the trade down blows up in his face, then trade down some more and stock pile picks/players for Sam (or for whoever JD goes after in 2022). So many options and ways this can go! Draft night is gonna be very exciting, probably most exciting since...well....ever!
NCJet well pointed out in the tread above "I'm getting to the point where I think I may just rather roll the dice on Fields or Wilson and have all of our picks to build around him.[/QUOTE] Agree with that sentiment completely. There appears to be a lot of consensus by analysts for NFL teams in need of a QB that Fields and Wilson are worth the second pick, as substantiated by the implications of a trade the experts are proposing with Houston for them to get their new QB, or some other team like Atlanta wanting to trade up to two to get their QB, so why not us? There is always risk, in fact there is risk even with Watson, where he might want to be traded again after two years because of whatever new reason he desires.
My post did not speak to the specifics of the hypothetical trade but only to the "Stay the course till we find our own thru the draft" comment to which I responded, I probably should have bolded it. Until proven one way or another, even Trevor Lawrence would represent nothing more than fifty year of Jets drafting quarterbacks.
Many? Looks like just the nobody writing the article, unless you really think the couple of dozen mooks commenting on it deserve any more respect than all us TGG mooks right here. Of course there's about 9,000 "votes" on the system - looks like a lot of Dolphins and Panthers fans sat around banging in votes. [ Full disclosure: I voted twice, but just to test the system - no registration required, multiple vote accepted. ]
I'm surprise this hasn't been posted yet, I'd really like to see the original Chronicle article but it's paywalled. John McClain calls for the Texans to trade Deshaun Watson - ProFootballTalk (nbcsports.com) McClain: It's time Texans entertain trade offers for Deshaun Watson (houstonchronicle.com)
