Ok, memory is a bit hazy but I recall that 3/5ths of the starting OL went out for the regular season with various injuries. That was the reason for the teams poor performance for the duration of the regular season. Couldn't block for the run, or keep the QB clean and vertical. Lack of sustained drives led to bad time of possession differential, causing defense to play for longer than normal. It is very hard to be a competitive squad with the loss of two OL starters (see this years 2020 Super Bowl as an example) that team lost 3 starters. I remember someone on Inside the NFL, or another show of that type stating at the start of week 13 when the Jets were 10-1 that they would NOT win another game that season. I found his comments crazy, little did I know.
There was an offer in 1989 for the Jets to come back to Shea. The Jets would get September home games, the stadium would undergo a refurbishment...but Hess turned it down
I loved Gastineau, the Jets have suited anyone of his sacking ilk for decades. But, it was a boneheaded play. Kosar was sacked from behind after throwing incomplete on second and eighteen. Still brutal after all these years.
lol what exactly happened in that deli Endlessly? Did they seriously refuse to serve you or something, just because you had a Jets hat on??!!
He was a horrific owner. I don't care what the bathrooms were like there is nothing more humiliating than playing in Giants Stadium
He sure did and Parcells loved the old man. He cried when he met him from the returning plane from Denver. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
Someone said not egregious! I just watched the replay. The ball was out of Kosar's hands about two seconds when Gastinueau hit him with the top of his helmet in the small of his back. Even Criqui went "ughh" when he saw the replay. Gastineau was a great pass rusher but he was a jerk. Funny thing is, he was 40 years ahead of his time. Back then, then Jets were hated because of his antics. Now, he'd be welcomed with open arms
Endlessly, I agree. My uncle had always told me that it was a BS call and that the refs were just out to get Gastineau bc they didnt like him...but everything you said about the hit is correct, lol. He took two steps after Kosar released the ball, didn't even pretend to start slowing down, and to top it all off, he basically speared him with the top of his helmet in the lower back. Like I said in a previous post, after the flag was thrown, nobody on the Jets, including Gastineau even seemed to vehemently argue the call, which surprised me, lol.
I second that. Leahy was quite unreliable in pressure situations. The change in fortunes for him probably came when they moved to Giants Stadium. Shea was difficult to kick in. In today’s NFL Leahy would not have lasted with the team the way his career started.
Very true. In the 70’s kicking in the NFL was still considered an adventure. A 50 yard FG was almost incredible. Nowadays not only is a kicker expected to hit routinely from 50-55 yards if he misses more than two his potential replacement will be in practice trying out the very next Monday.......
Excellent point Mr.Jet80. I remember when I was a kid growing up in the mid to late 80's.....what you said is 100% true. 40+ yard field goals were a 50/50 proposition, and ANYTHING over 50 yards was like a hail mary...lol. Even the kickers who were considered "the best in the NFL" missed a lot of FG's compared to the guys today. one of the many ways the game has changed drastically over the course of the past 30 years.
