Sam Darnold and the entire Jamal trade, both Jamal ones and third. Or our #2 straight up. We might be competing against ourselves.
Trading a young QB on his first contract whom you overwhelmingly win with for a young prime QB on his second contract is like begging the fates to slap you down. Once Jackson gets on his second contract the deal becomes more even but right now the Ravens would have to be insane to trade him plus anything for a guy already making the cap limit money every year.
We have enthusiasm for the upcoming season due entirely to the overhaul of our front office and coaching staff. Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh give us fresh hope we didn't have 3 months ago. And so it is in Texas. Out with the rot HC/GM Bill Obrien, in with the new, young promising GM Nick Caserio (from Patriots tree!) and new (black) HC David Culley. Everyone in the Texans org that Deshawn will interface with on a daily basis is new. Brand new. Deshawn could be convinced to give the new GM/HC a shot. Caserio has already said he loves Watson and definitely wants him back in the fold. Plus Watson has his new, black HC he seems to have wanted. At least the black part. Compare that to the alternative where Obrien is still the GM/HC and nothing changed. I realize Watson is upset he wasn't given a seat at the table. However, Cal Mcnair said he went to dinner twice with Deshawn and felt he had a good feel for what Deshawn wanted when he was making the decisions. This a different from the narrative where Deshawn was promised to have input but then completely blown off. There were also several phone calls from the Texans to Deshawn that went unanswered/unreturned during this time frame. So Watson can be upset, but not THAT upset where he sits out the season. Watson has every reason to give it a go, right where he is, at least for this year.
And how many other players do these represent? Cult jack easterby. I hope his disasterous arrival in Houston gives us a QB. I do wonder why the Texans didn't request Saleh at all? Every other team did. Sent from my M2007J20CG using Tapatalk
Jets: Mekhi Becton wants nothing to do with this Deshaun Watson proposed trade The New York Jets rookie tackle doesn't want to give up that much to land a new quarterback. © Provided by Fansided By now, the inclination of Deshaun Watson heading elsewhere seems to be old news. The Houston Texans' star quarterback is looking for a new home after the team's offseason moves have left a sour taste on the franchise. One team on the list? The New York Jets. New York currently holds the No.2 pick in April's draft. Houston would be wanting more than just one selection for a top-five quarterback and proven talent in the league at the most important position in football. According to The Athletic's Connor Hughes, perhaps adding a proven name like second-year defensive lineman Quinnen Williams will sweeten the Texans into trading the 25-year-old star. However, Mekhi Becton, the Jets left tackle, isn't a fan of what the offer would be. Simply put, losing Williams is losing more than just a player in the rookie's eyes. Becton has a point on the trade market Becton emerged as one of the top run blockers in the league after being drafted 11th overall out of Louisville. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the second-best tackle in the 2020 NFL Draft class, only finishing behind Tampa Bay Buccaneers standout Tristan Wirfs. The Jets offense could be looking to upgrade under center with a new regime in place. Sam Darnold wasn't the biggest problem for gang green, but is he the solution for Robert Saleh? Saleh is a new head coach. Mike LaFleur is a new offensive coordinator. Meanwhile, Joe Douglas didn't draft Darnold to be his quarterback after joining the Jets in 2019. All those signs point to a new man heading under center. That doesn't mean Watson is the guy for New York. The Jets are far and away starting a rebuild. Watson answers the question under center, but what about the problems at wide receiver? Cornerback? Pass rush? Plus, should Williams, along with multiple early picks, go to Houston, are the Jets in a better spot than they were with Darnold. Becton is one of perhaps three cornerstone pieces for the Jets. Williams is likely the second. It'll be a hard sell to both the fans and the team that trading a rising star in the trenches is a good idea. Then again, name a quarterback like Watson on the market?
I sort of addressed it by saying "Everyone in the Texans org that Deshawn will interface with on a daily basis is new". I realize there's still the owner and his boy Esterby. I don't believe Watson actually deals with these dudes on a daily basis like he does the coaching staff. I could be wrong. Esterby could call Waston at 10 O'clock at night and tell him to come over and dance for him. But there's enough 'new' there that Deshawn may decide to give it a year. He might feel good about his new coach, kinda like we are with Saleh.
By all accounts, if Easterby only wanted Watson to dance for him, he'd be getting off easy. It sure appears that Easterby has his paws in every aspect of Houston Texans' lives from the brand of cornflakes at breakfast to the fabric content of the locker room towels as well as which distributors supply them. The guy is in the locker room, on the field and probably dialed in 24/7 to every single camera in the complex. There is no escape.
Actually, Becton's comment, if you look at the original article and the Tweet attached, is regarding giving up Quinnen Williams as part of the trade. Nothing else. The article is terribly written by a nobody and the headline makes it much worse. It would be generous to give it a one on a scale of one to ten. But thanks for sharing.
Entirely this. Connor has written an entire article about Becton tweeting a GIF. Welcome to the off-season.
Not even. The article was written by some mook named Cole Thompson who referenced the Hughes Tweet to which Becton responded with two seconds of Tracy Morgan. This will be over soon, right?
I agree it's a nothing article, but I agree with the sentiment of it for not trading for Watson. Is he a great quarterback, you bet your ass he is but I'd rather draft Fields/Wilson @2 and use all other picks to build a roster. We have so many holes that not one QB can solve all of our problems no matter how excellent he is.
Or you could say, we have that many holes it is pointless drafting a rookie and forcing him to be in Sam's situation, yes, we could sit them for a season but then this also counteracts a year of the cheap contract that people like about rookie QB's and then the small matter of the risk in picking the right one. So far all the candidates have fans and outright haters, we all have eyes but people see differently. Watson for me is the only safe bet out there and even then we are the Jets and his arm will fall off just after he puts his name to the contract.
If the guy (who I suspect is not from the New York area but somewhere in the Midwest) wanted to make a case for not trading for Watson he should have made a case for it on that basis and not created a fake headline. There is nothing within to indicate that Becton has a problem with trading for Watson. The Jets have unsuccessfully been trying to draft a franchise quarterback for over fifty years; perhaps it is the right time to take a different approach.
You are literally the only person on the planet with this take. Even the Texans superhomers I've read are aware of what a shambles their FO is in.
What will we be paying the rookie? Minus that price off Watson's and give us the extra cost for Watson over a rookie? I ask as I don't know how much a rookie drafted in #2 would earn.
A rookie QB drafted #2 would earn about $35M over the course of 4 years. Deshaun Watson will earn $35M in 2022.
And that QB could be a backup while Watson is elite for four years. That’s the trade off you make, and it’s a no brainer.
