I do think that Fields strikes me as a great leader. I wouldn't be unhappy at all if we took him. It's like a 1A and 1AA thing for me between him and Wilson. Sometimes I still think Fields would be a better pick.
It does. But it's an interesting dynamic to not have a quarterback that teammates seem to rally around. Like I said - Roethlisberger is the only guy that I can ever remember being pretty successful that doesn't have an infectious leadership style.
Well I think you're afflicted with confirmation bias, and aren't really seeing what's there. He's consistently led his team back from deficits and slow starts, and in that Coastal Carolina game, when the CC pass rushers landed a late hit on him at the half, his teammates came to his defense and brawl erupted. Unless you have other evidence which I haven't seen or heard beyond those two flimsy "opinion" pieces, I think you're overstating this issue.
That's cool. You don't have to agree. We'll see what happens. The good thing about a forum is it's all recorded for us. The bold is not true. They trailed at halftime in one game all year and that was by six points to Houston. They trailed UTSA by three in the first quarter, San Diego by 7 in the first half for 8 minutes of game time and that's about it. Now we're crediting him for fixing a slow start? I mean c'mon man. He's apart of the slow start.
What part isn't true? I said he led them from behind several times, and you listed several instances of that. And yes, he was part of the reason for the slow starts, but he rallied them and led them to victory. I mean c'mon man, you're completely biased against him.
That's the thing: we will never know, and it is our loss. The guy could have had incredible year, shown improvements and be second coming of Trevor Lawrence. Or not a first round material. We will never know. What we do know is that he did play one game with much superior talent around him against weak team, and wasn't particularly impressive in it. I understand that, but you have to appreciate the fact that will all these recruitments they were 5-4 last year outside of P5. This year 11-1. Before Zach came to school they only won like 4 games total with all the recruiting powers you are talking about. I hear what you are saying, but it just does not explain remarkable turnaround this year, destroying same opponents they struggled with before like SD, getting highest rankings in decades, etc... What does explain it is that Zach Wilson below up like Joe Burrow did after finally having an offseason to work on his game and being injury free. Any interview or video you can share where his presence suggested he is a poor leader?
Because it's hyperbolic to say that he consistently lead his team from behind when they trailed for like 20-25 minutes of game time all season long.
Not sure what you're talking about with Burrow. And as far as interviews or videos, no. Because for one, I follow college football all year and watch this stuff throughout the year. But either way we disagree in entirety on the premise so I'm not really trying to entertain you picking through his interview and telling me he said the right thing here and the right thing there. You think he has all the characteristics off the field and on. I don't. We'll see what happens and no hard feelings either way.
I wouldn't be surprised if one of those teams was the Saints. Sean Payton loved Mahomes but is probably not wanting Wilson to fall in range for an Atlanta, Carolina move up. So the cone of silence that was around Mahomes isn't going to happen for Wilson thus time.
It's being incredibly picky in order to justify your weak argument that Wilson doesn't possess good leadership ability. In fact, at times, his team was behind and struggling, and in fact, he did what he needed to do to get the win. I made no claims that he's the Second Coming of Joe Montana, I just gave evidence that he possesses leadership ability to keep his team organized and focused and leading them to win. But it's obvious you've closed your mind about him, so be it.
It's being incredibly picky to try to tell me that he somehow willed his team back into games or lead comebacks against a bunch of middle of the pack Group of Five teams when they trailed in three games in the first half all year, technically had one second half "comeback" against Houston in 12 games. Even if my assessment is wrong (and it's entirely possible it is), your evidence of him consistently leading his team back is weak at best.
Why is Mac Jones not considered? I looked him on all his throws video on youtube and he is flawless. He reminds me of a Chad Pennington/Tom Brady type. He reads the game incredibly well, he is very patient and move around the pocket like a pro and he is incredible at dragging safety away with his look and fake pump. I am very shocked that people consider a QB like Fields above him. Not to mention his ball placement is one of the best I have ever seen in College. His only true flaw is his arm strength but that is not problematic IMO.
The biggest knock on him is that he plays for a semi-pro team and it's hard to figure out how much is him and how much is because of the talent and coaching around him. But IMO, on the right team, he might turn out to be a Brady, which is why I've said I'm afraid the Pats grab him.
I was only asking because I greatly respect your knowledge and learned a lot from you, including about recruiting, power structure of College teams and so on. I only disagree on some conclusions as for me even the weaker schedule (still with some decent teams as well outside of P5) just doesn't explain historic performance we just witnessed from Zach Wilson. The comparison to Burrow was that Zach improved leaps and bounds from year before, just like Burrow did in his last season (though Zach is in his 3d year, while Burrow was on 5th). This to me makes sense because Zach was playing with serious injury to throwing shoulder in freshman year and then had surgery, missed entire offseason, and was still recovering second year. 2020 was his first offseason healthy working with 3D QB group where he is now. And I have nothing vested in Zach, in fact, I didn't watch him much during the year and thought Fields would be the pick at #2. But when I did watch his entire tape, I was very impressed and in my book he went ahead of even Fields, who is also a great prospect. I am still gathering all info, including good info from you, and waiting for pro day, where we can get more info, such as measurements, athletics, maybe medical, interviews, etc... I do want to ask you to watch his last game interview (only few mins), and let me know if this is consistent with what you observed throughout the season, did he improve his presence maybe from what you saw before, or pretty much you watch this and just make a different conclusion than I did:
Every year we argue like fuck about the various QB's on offer, this year we are getting towards Baker Mayfield levels of back and forth and tbh I never thought that would be beaten.
Nice breakdown of Wilson from a longtime local sports writer in Utah. They address the character concerns. He says in 30 years of covering sports he's never met anyone as driven to be successful as Wilson. Says he has no life other than watching film and working out.
I was just reading an offer of Washington Football Team's #19 pick for Sam Darnold, and I think that would be a slam dunk for both teams. The Jets go into the 2021 draft with the #2, #19 and #23 picks. Washington gets a solid starting QB with potential big upside, who makes them favorites in the NFC East with that defense and Dak coming off an injury.
