Ya I get it. As a fan, that's definitely the way to go, cut your loses early and move on. But for the GM who may be let go himself the day after he admits he fucked up, it can be a lot tougher to move on. A GM desperately wants his picks to succeed, and will look for any excuse to keep him, get him more help, better lineman, better WRs, all the while hoping he can salvage his pick (and his career). Sometimes that's when the owner has to step in! But yes, I like having the HC report to the GM. HC's don't really want to sacrifice wins just to 'develop' rookies his GM just drafted. The GM might see it differently and order the HC to play certain players. How many times did Gace say he was going with Gore b/c Gore gave him the best chance to win THAT game. So frustrating!

No way should we be giving up the first three picks we have in this year‘s draft. I am all for doling out first rounders for an elite quarterback but you can’t completely empty the cupboard in 2021 as part of that. If that’s what it takes then oh well, time to move on.
Agree on this. I am glad not a GM (not like I could be anyhow) so many decisions to make. I have a hard time deciding on what to make the family for dinner sometimes. Either way it shakes out I just want it to be the best move for the Jets.
ROFLMAO!!! What utter and total nonsense! Did JD shtoop your wife or something? Your bias against him is ridiculous.
What has he done that is so great? Rebuild our o-line?Improved playmakers. Done a great job handling players and contracts ( Osewlve, Adams ,Bell) . An avg draft where we have 1 stud and some potential. Every team in the league mostly feels about the same with their draft class after 1 yr. I want JD to do good but the man needs to step up and show something
He did a great job getting value back for a disgruntled Adams. The OL in 2020 wasn't as putrid as the 2018 and 2019 OL's were. Bell was a Maccagnan signing and turned out to be a dud. If every team feels great about their draft class after 1 year, then isn't it too early to say it's an average class?
This has to be trolling. Douglas was brought in after the 2019 offseason. So he's only had 1 offseason to impact the team. He drafted a franchise LT and turned a disgruntled safety into 2 1st round picks and a 3rd rounder. We are only 1 year into his first draft, way too early to write off any of his draft picks at this point. Mims and Hall in particular are still very promising.
That's just batshit crazy. Although they had a pretty decent season with a mediocre QB and no McCaffrey...
Not sure how much credit Douglas deserves for Becton. Odds are he was drafting a tackle no matter what, and he may have taken the wrong one as Wirfs looked really good in Tampa.
This is my view as well. I wanted Wirfs over Becton, he seems to be as good if not better and with less injury concerns. Douglas' biggest win by far has been the Adams trade.
Wirfs is a RT right now playing in a championship team with the greatest QB of all time and one of the best lines in all of football. His QB knew how to read defenses and release the ball in time. Wirfs may be “better” but it’s not a fair comparison. They both played very well and becton is playing a more difficult more important position.
This is exactly what I think the asking price is. I do it if they take out the 2022 first or 34th overall this year.
Except freeing cap space and acquiring picks is as important to building a team as the players you pick up when you spend that cap space and draft players. You equated success as a GM simply to the acquiring players, of which the absence of equated to a lack of success. That’s a silly argument to make and you were called out rightfully for it. The Cowboys went 1-15 after trading Herschel Walker; by your reasoning you’d criticize the GM for the team being terrible and ignore the fact that sacrificing that season created the foundation to win 3 Super Bowls. Now that he has a foundation of space and picks, if he fails to acquire good players with them he you can’t argue he had failed. But not just yet.
The Browns drafted Willis right before Becton and surrounded him with pro bowlers and Becton had a much better year. Becton had the best year as a first round pick for the Jets since Sheldon Richardson at a much more valuable position. If you don't like Douglas, that's fine. But he's had 1 offseason. All his draft picks have a season or less under their belts because of injury. He got way more back than anyone thought he would for Adams and did it with little disruption. And he didn't sign any contracts that are going to stop us from signing whoever we want. In fact, we are in great cap position despite the contracts Mac signed right before Douglas took over (Johnson, Bell, Mosely).
What the Browns (and Giants with Thomas) did doesn't matter because for all we know, Douglas may have taken Willis or Thomas over Becton. We only know that Douglas preferred Becton over Wirfs, and we'll see going forward if he made the right choice.
