A second or third alone wouldn’t be telling because it may be a team trying to low ball. If the Jets are consistently fielding offers of only seconds or only thirds, yeah it would be telling.
Does an NFL team want him doing that? that’s a great way to see your high first round pick investment on the shelf for extended period of time. The key takeaway with all of this is that injury time off is key learning time off = stunted development.
Well, if he ends up being traded for that, then clearly these are the only offers. So, let's see what happens. No, and I am sure this is something that can be coached out of him. However, more relevant point at this stage is that he is not passive and very athletic. That's the thing that's exciting here: you have a combination of mobility, athleticism, great accuracy, big arm talent, top in deep ball in decades, top in tight window throws even since pff did these rankings, lowest TO worthy throws, most NFL rated throws in class, turned around his College program, broke school's Steve Young's records for completion %, and appears to have a decent size at least on the recent pictures next to Fields and earlier to Brees. That's why he is the favorite for #2 right now. After the pro day measurements, if he comes up with decent size and successful medical I suspect he might cement #2 spot.
True I was being lazy; in theory I'd also have to consider the possibility Lawrence falls to us but is the first quarterback drafted because Favre got in the Jags heads.
Another tidbit from this was that Sam actually had slightly more time to throw, on average, than most other QB's in the league. Some food for thought for the crowd claiming that his OL was keeping him from succeeding this year.
Yes and No - The OL was giving 'a' QB time but a Brady, Stafford or Flacco can do more with that time then Darnold can. As someone posted earlier this is perhaps down to SD's sparse experience of playing QB from High School onwards which probably placed him a long way behind his draft peers in having to adjust to making decisions at NFL speed and gaining extra fractions from looking at an opposing D and recognising what they are doing. If we do 'Build around Sam' by somehow building an all-first team pro offensive line then I stil don't know how the Sam fans can be so sure that he can make that kind of leap in processing information in the next year.
Good post. I think that's the gap that people don't understand. Obviously pressure speeds up the processing time and makes quarterback uncomfortable. But when he has time he has trouble locating the open receiver. And I don't really care how bad of a play caller Gase is. We ran basic route concepts as every NFL offense does with open receivers at times that were missed. That can be the difference between extending drives and getting points on the board or at the very least flipping the field.
Patrick Mahomes had 5 seconds to throw in the SB. He shoulda had a huge game. But unfortunately he was scrambling around for a historic 497 yards while dodging d-lineman, LBers, blitzing DBs, a while trying to look downfield for an open WR. All 'time to throw' are not equal. I'd rather have 3 seconds in a clean pocket than 10 seconds running for my life. Sam would probably agree, although he probably doesn't know what '3 seconds in a clean pocket' feels like.
Great posts, guys! Actually some of the stuff you just posted is why I felt Douglas will take him at #2: 1. Big arm that fits the system. 2. Much better deep ball thrower than Sam. 3. Much less turnovers than Sam. In a way the Jets went the opposite of Gase with Saleh, I think they may do similar at QB and go with the opposite of Darnold, with Wilson.
Let's just bring this back to reality. Sam was not abused all year anywhere near the way Mahomes was in SB. Line wasn't terrible this year. Sam actually did OK under pressure. The bigger problem is that Sam is the absolutely the worst in NFL from the CLEAN pocket and one of the worst in TO worthy plays, as well as on target throws, showing inherent lack of accuracy. These were the same exact issues he had in College, where he was outside of top 20 even on clean pocket passing and bottom 5 overall in TO worthy plays. Just for comparison, Zach Wilson is #1 overall in lowest TO worthy passes, and #2 overall in clean pocket %. Sam never fixed these issues. Can't blame all of that on talent around him and coaches, though I agree it's also a part of it. And certainly comparison to Mahomes' running for his life all the time in SB is completely off.
The stat takes that into account, I believe. It would be pretty foolish for them to count a scramble as the OL giving the QB more time to throw.
1000% correct in my opinion. That is why I take all the stats with a grain of salt. The fact of the matter is that it takes longer for Sam to process information than the Brady's, Rodger's, Breese's and Mahome's of the world. That is not Sam strength, he struggles with the reads. Further, Gase' game plan where you have to scan the whole field and fire to the open man quickly, was beyond Sam's capabilities and he failed more often than not. Unfortunately with Sam one has to dummy the game plan down to first/second read based on where the safety goes. Not an ideal situation by a long shot, and good defenses will confuse the crap out of him. That by the way, even though many here think I'm nuts, is one of the things I really like when I watch Wilson, level of competition or not. He seems to me he can very quickly scan the field with his eyes and make an instant decision behind a weak line, while throwing a damned good and accurate ball. Hell, I said it before, call me crazy, but he reminds me of a young Rodgers or Drew Breese when I see him play. I would be very unhappy if we do not strike on a QB with the second pick, be it Wilson or Fields.
no chance you take Smith at 2....thats insane....hes not even the best WR on his college team. And Pitts will be long gone before 23
