The one thing I don’t understand, if Darnold is as bad as you and others state, how are there rumors of the Jets being able to get a 1st or 2nd+ pick(s) for him?

    Are they all untrue??

All it takes is one dumb GM to overpay for a guy. Jets fans know better than anyone that often times the paid professionals are not smarter than a sharp observer. There's also career risk to account for, GM's will do foolish things in an attempt to save their career if they're on the hot seat. We see it all the time when GM's overpay in trades or for free agents.

I also don't think it's a stretch at all to say a lot of us have done more homework on Sam than most GM's. We've been debating about this guy for years. I've probably looked up almost every metric imaginable on the guy at this point.

He's not as bad as many of the Anti-Darnold posters say. His potential is still there and he is only 23 years old. Definitely worth taking a chance on with a 2nd round pick or late 1st round pick as some analysts have suggested.

I could be wrong, but but neither Fields, Wilson, nor Lance have been pounded and chased the way Sam was for the last 3 years. That takes a toll on a player's psyche, just ask David Carr. All of them have more accurate arms than Sam. All of them can throw with anticipation, Sam cannot. All of them are more careful with the ball, make better decisions and turn the ball over less than Sam. To be sure, some of Sam's problems are due to the lousy coaching, lousy OL and lousy skill position players that he's had to play with the last 3 years, but some of it is also Sam. He had a problem turning the ball over at USC. He regressed his sophomore year.

He had only been playing football for 5-6 years when he was drafted, and only playing QB for less than four years.* That's huge in terms of knowledge of how to play the QB position, fundamentals, football IQ and decision making. (see the article below) So they all already have a head start over where Sam was when he was drafted. Each would come to the Jets with more experience playing the QB position, more knowledge of how to play the position, and into a better situation than Sam did and would have a chance to develop and flourish. I believe that JD and Saleh are wise enough that they might even let the rookie sit for a while to avoid putting too much pressure on him or he on himself. Unfortunately, Sam didn't have that opportunity.

I do think that Sam has a lot of physical talent. The question is how much damage has the last 3 years done to his psyche and self confidence? Also, would he be willing to sit and learn for a while? I think that would be the best thing for him and with his lack of experience playing QB before he came to the NFL, may be the only way he can come close to reaching his potential, but unfortunately with his contract situation the way it is, I don't know that he, his agent, or team he is on would be willing to do that.

It's too bad that he didn't opt to go to Duke. If he had, he would have learned from David Cutcliffe whom Peyton and Eli Manning credit with really helping them, and he developed several QBs who were really not that talented to play well enough to be drafted, among them the Giants' Daniel Jones. If it weren't for Cutcliffe, he probably wouldn't even have been drafted, much less drafted so high in the 1st round. If Sam had gone to Duke, he may have even stayed for 3-4 years and would have been better prepared for the rigors of an NFL career.

Out of curiosity, what do you think Minshew is worth?

A kingsize mars bar and if he shaves that silly tache off I'd throw in a packet of Cheese XL as well.

Something you will never have experienced :p

I don't know as much about Minshew, but he has played well for a bad team. 6th round pick right? That hurts his value compared to a #3 overall pick. It shouldn't but it does. So I don't know his exact worth, but similar to Sam, if a team thinks he can start for them, it would be a good risk trading for him. I don't know how much other teams value him. I know they valued Sam a lot in 2018.

I honestly don't know how they calculate the rate of a wr being open, esp if we dont know what route the receiver is running and what route he supposed to run. The drop rate actually helps Sam, it shows his passes are catchable. The WRs are not Megatron who are catching balls 11 feet in the air, so if our guys are catching balls then that means Sam's passes are pretty much on point.

Again I cant speak of the rate our WRs are open, bcuz all i see is Sam being chased out of the pocket, and trying to make something out of nothing which he was very good at.

I agree that teams will value him less than they should because he was a 6th round pick, but he's a significantly better quarterback than Sam.

I really think that 1st round rumors are untrue. I mean Jets may be asking for it, but don't think anyone offered it. 2nd round, possibly towards then end of it is a possibility, and if it happens JD will prove himself an absolute genius. I think most likely it will be 3d. People might take a chance on a QB later in the draft even if probability of success is small. We just took a chance with the 4th on Morgan, knowing chances are small. Similarly someone might give a 3d or so for Sam. But I have a hard time seeing a 1st rounder after 3 years Sam had. Also, in Jets situation, we actually have 2nd overall pick this year and can get a guy who is even a better prospect than Sam ever was, but without 3 years of NFL struggles and regression. Other teams are not in this position and may use a later pick just to take a shot.

Yeah, I did not watch him enough to say that, but he seemed pretty good when I did watch him. Keeping him on the bench was smart of Jacksonville to secure the #1 pick.

Darnold is basically a one year hire at this point and considering his record entering that year I just can't see a team giving up a first or second for him when the consensus is he needs a situation where he can sit and fix himself.

Having spent over 20 years either attending or watching Trojan football I must confirm that your assessment of Sam is IMO very accurate. My season holder friends and I watched every one of his games up close and personal. I was thrilled that he went to the Jets, but worried that the organization did not really know what they were getting, nor how to develop him before making him a starter.
He was physically very, very talented but raw. He needed at least a good year on the bench behind a top OC to make him comfortable behind center in the NFL. He was a natural scrambler prone to improvise and better throwing on the run than in the pocket, he was beyond green at reading complex defenses and prone to fumble the football.
Well, we failed him and he failed the team. We began his destruction under Bates, changed the whole offensive paradigm under Gase in year two, forcing him to adapt to a very complex defensive read in my opinion, disregarding his strengths, then in year three he lost his two safety blankets, Anderson and an ineffective TE. He became insure of his capabilities and confused with the game plan. Results. He is now damaged goods in need of a completely fresh restart. It will take time to see the best he can be behind a solid game plan, top coaching and better players.
I’m not at all sure The FO sees this a timely option for a team in desperate need for a QB that excels in confidence and takes charge of the offense. I hope I’m dead wrong because I like Sam.

That's not accurate. If his passes were catchable he wouldn't have the third worst completion % in the NFL. All it shows is that when he did happen to be accurate he wasn't hurt by his receivers dropping balls. In fact it goes the other way, if our receivers had a league-average drop rate Sam's completion % would be even worse.

He was not very good at making something out of nothing. Generally when Sam would try to make something out of nothing he'd turn the ball over.

Just reread this and thought about it. And I think the problem is that he reeks of frat boy without the Baker personality. Baker's the type of guy that you'll still believe in if he sucks because he's a cool guy and he pats you on the back and shotguns a beer with you at the pent house that night even after you fumble and he threw two interceptions.

Wilson strikes me as the type of guy that says "yeah it'll be OK. I'll see you next week I'm going on my parents yacht and then have Church."

Really dumb analysis. But he just seems to have an extremely unrelatable life that'll make it hard to rally behind and believe in.

LOL Sam is problem the one QB we've ever had that CAN make those obscene throws. It's the easy ones that are head scratchers.

The Super Bowl was one of Mahomes's worst games. If we're gonna compare apples to apples, we'd be comparing it to Sam's ghosts game.

I was comparing Mahomes to Bucs total D with Bowels as DC.
There are some (on here) that say a FQB solves everything. Others say a solid team does the same, maybe better. What do you think? Use recourses to build a solid team, or trade it away for what FQB is behind door number 2?
