I didn't say $25M, my discomfort with any contract is that it would almost assuredly be too long and too much for my taste. I'm not saying I'm sure I'm right, just that the depth of the hole dug by Sam's prior performance is too much for me personally to get past with anything short of a season with legitimate MVP talk. Hell, even with that I wouldn't be completely convinced - I'm not even close to sold on Josh Allen at this point in time.
i'll admit the idea of an extension or option has been on my mind a lot too, and i think it's absolutely something that needs to be discussed.. You're right Sam can bet on himself but there's an opportunity cost too. If Sam doesn't give them something for rolling the dice with him again, they're all the more inclined to move on from him. ANd then he has to sell his services after a truly dreadful year It will ultimately come down to whether there is any trust in the relationship between Sam and the Jets FO,. If he's excited about the new direction and offense, and trust Joe it's one thing; if not it's another Money of course will be a factor but that has a way of settling out if you play well
He can also do the sensible thing that Jameis Winston did and go and sit behind a franchise quarterback for a couple years before he gets his chance. That opportunity doesn't present itself if he extend his contract with a franchise that does not have a FQB and established offensive mind in place. As most have said - he's only 23. He can realistically sit behind a good quarterback for 3-4 years and still go on to a decade of success. Sitting for a year or two used to be the norm and a good franchise should look at returning to that. I doubt they'll ever admit it but it worked for Mahomes, Brady, Rodgers, and Brees, and countless other success stories. And I'm sure there was tons of value for them to learn how to be a pro, breakdown film, analyze defenses, travel and conduct themselves as a pro, stay away from nightclubs, etc. The way the draft and fifth year option is structured, and the pressures a franchise faces to win ASAP and find out what their young bucks can do have ultimately hurt their development. A methodical approach can work. Which is why if we draft a QB at two, I want a veteran signed and them standing on the sideline with a headset and clipboard to soak it all in.
My apologies, when you said a contract decision hanging over his head, I thought you were referring to the 5th year option at 25m
I agree with everything you say re the benefits of players sitting and have been advocating that for a loooong time I just think that if he's not offering something back for us taking the risk of running with him again it heavily skews Sam's days being numbered here .
I am just looking at the last few seasons, and see only Lamar and Dak as the outliers who was grabbed with #32, and #135. Then you have 9 decent ones go top 12, and 8 of them top 10, and 7 of them top 7. Think of it like that: first 12 picks in last 5 drafts yielded in good QBs. Then next 123 picks got 2. Pretty much you can conclude outside of top 10, top 7 even, you need to get EXTREMELY fortunate to hit one, MUCH more so than picking higher. And the trend is to pick QBs even higher now, so I don't think prospects like Mahomes and Watson with good arm, size, accuracy, and athleticism will be hanging around at #10 and 12 any longer. And next year, we could be #15 and higher, like NE is this year.
I think the Saints are a major market for a Darnold trade. They have a lot of vets with problematic contracts, they're something like $80M over the cap right now counting the draft picks, they have only 3 picks in (1st, 3rd and 4th) in the 2021 draft but they have an extra 3rd in 2022. The Jets could come away with a major haul of veteran talent from among the dicey contracts, players like Marshon Lattimore, Ryan Ramczyk and Janoris Jenkins, maybe taking Taysom Hill's contract as well. This assuming the Jets have decided to move on from Darnold. I think there's a reasonable chance the Jets could get a 4-for-1 for Darnold in that type of deal centered on really improving the team in 2021. The Saints are going to have to cut or extend everybody in the list above and with Drew Brees retiring they may not want to make commitments to those players at this time. Note that the Saints are already sitting at $175M against the 2022 cap not including 3 of the players listed above.
If that's the case, and I dont disagree, then why can't Darnold just sit here? Jets acquire a veteran QB and sit Sam Darnold behind him.
As long as we have a great QB, I don't think anyone will regret trading Sam. The only way we'd truly regret it is if fulfilled his potential elsewhere and JD failed to get us a topnotch QB, and I think the odds of that happening are incredibly small. I think at best Sam, will be lucky to become an average QB. JD can probably find one of those in his sleep.
No, the worst would be if Wilson, Fields and Lance ALL became great QBs, it took the Jets another 3-5 years just to find even an average one, Smith stays on IR most of his career, and Harris wasn't that effective because opposing teams always had 8 in the box because they didn't have to worry about our passing attack. It would still be awful if the QB the Jets want becomes a star, even if Smith stays healthy and Harris is as great as I think he will be. Smith will have to have someone capable of getting him the ball consistently, and that isn't going to be Darnold or just any old schlub QB.
No there aren't. Go take a look at draft history. Would you be happy with Daniel Jones, Dwayne Haskins, or Drew Lock? Because in 2019 we wouldn't have gotten Kyler Murray, and that's who we would have been looking at taking. In 2016, we'd have been looking at Carson Wentz, Paxton Lynch, or Christian Hackenberg. At best, we'd have had Jared Goff, and we wouldn't have had a shot at him. Even if so, I wouldn't have been happy with him. The BS with the Jets being able to find a good QB in any draft, is just that...utter BS, and it needs to stop, because the facts prove it to be nonsense.
Actually, what NC is describing happened just a few years ago, when we had the worst play at QB, yet still didn't draft Mahomes and Watson. We are in the similar spot now. You went a bit overboard there with meteor example.
Seriously? You're making yourself look bad, guy. The facts show clearly that not every draft has good QBs and getting a FQB is difficult.
Aren't you a guy that believes he should be out of the league? Truth is, he's somewhere in-between. But if there's team(s) out there willing to offer up a 1st round pick and offer up a new contract, then maybe Sam's not the terrible QB we think he is. You said yourself he'd never sign for $8m, so even you think he's better than the worse QB in the league.
Just because JD signs off on Sam's 5th year, doesn't mean he has to pay him. It means he's keeping all avenues open, including trading Sam in 2022.
Why do that when we can get draft picks for Darnold right now? It's still highly unlikely he'll become a good enough starter in the NFL. Plus a veteran QB does nothing for us. By the time the rest of the roster is good enough to compete the veteran will likely be in decline.
We aren't playing with Monopoly money. You don't risk 25 mil with the hopes that if he sucks we could trade him. Who would trade for 4 years of crap with a salary of 25 mil Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
that's the point. You let the veteran take the beating. Build the roster up and maybe Darnold fixes his mechanics until the team is ready. Idk, just an idea..
