You can write it off all you want but prevailing themes prevail for a reason. And here’s my daily disclaimer: I think we should move on from Sam and I don’t think we are going to get a first round pick but I don’t think it’s ridiculous to think that actual NFL coaches and front office people think differently.
I just don't think people are lining up to hand over a first round draft pick for a one year audition of a bottom tier QB. And if he plays average, they are then faced with the big decision of paying him.....after trading a first round pick. Worse yet, he blows and they let him walk. The only way it works out for that team is if he lights it up and I think the odds are against him. Trading a one for Darnold is super risky...to the point where I couldn't see anyone doing it. But hey, I really hope someone does. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
suppose you drafted DeVonta Smith and Najee Harris with the 2 1st rounders and stuck with Darnold for another year, no excuses. Maybe that's not a bad idea. IDK. worst comes to worst you have 2 dynamite playmakers to build around even if Darnold isn't the answer
And then Darnold plays better but still a bottom 10 QB, we go 6-10, and we find ourselves with no good QB options next offseason.
I think the last couple off-seasons have shown there are always good QB options available. Especially when you have 2 1st round picks as the Jets will have next year
Two in a row isn't that convincing of a trend, and in 2019, the only team to come away with a good QB was the Cardinals who had the #1 pick.
If we're having to give up a boatload of picks to move up in 2022 where apparently there's a dearth of QB's then the question would be - Why didn't you use those picks to get Watson? Maybe we do take a trade down from #2 but I do see us leaving day 1 with a QB drafted with the idea we'll sit them behind Sam who can soak up the early damage or a tyrod type vet who can perhaps bridge/mentor on a higher level then Sam.
Darnold showed glimpses in 2018 and 2019. Every once in awhile he will make a throw that shows special arm talent that only a handful of guys can make in the league. He hurt his shoulder this year early on, I don’t think he ever was 100% after week 3. Now I’m not saying to keep Darnold as much as I am saying... its not a stretch for a team picking later in rd 1 to think Darnold’s ceiling is higher than the Qb’s (4th+ rated) left on the board. Truthfully his raw arm talent is better than almost all the Qb’s in this draft. I think just Lawrence and maybe Wilson have better arms.
Is it still classed as passing on somebody when you choose somebody else 5 picks earlier? In retrospect, it was certainly dumb but I still wonder how good either of them would have been or become at the shitshow known as the Jets, for one Mahomes would have been starting a lot sooner than he did and without Reid calling plays, maybe Watson would have managed, hell, the Texans certainly didn't protect him from getting the sack much.
Joe Douglas said he would always listen. Any good GM picks up the phone. There is no headline story here just business as usual.
THAT is surely a big sticking point, and something that might drive JD away from the Darnold experiment. IF JD goes with Sam for the 2021, it will one of go 2 ways: 1) JD does NOT pick up Sam's 5th year. If this happens, then Sam is simply keeping the seat warm for JD to try again in 2022. If Sam surprises and does well, JD can offer Sam a new contract right along with the rest of the NFL. If Sam crashes, it's a no brainer. 2) If JD signs off on Sam's 5th yr (which he should do if he keeps Sam), then JD sees Sam as potentially more than just a seat warmer. He thinks Sam will play OK, which will up his trade value if JD decides to move on. It will also keep Sam a Jet on the outside chance he performs 'good enough' in our new offense. 3) A last option is to offer Sam a team friendly 3 yr extension, with an easy out in yr 3. If Sam turns into Josh Allen and gets us close, JD can keep Sam for yr 3 or cut/trade him. But ya, JD's up against it when it comes to Sam's 5th yr.
agree with this. mahomes is a special Qb, but has played in an air raid offense all the way back from HS days... To think Gase would maximize his talents is a giant stretch. As good as Mahomes is, he’d have to learn to play like Peyton Manning under Gase’s shit tutelage... and with shit talent around him. Ultimately, I think he would flashed more talent then we’ve seen with Darnold, but we’d be having a lot of the same concerns vs the Jets being a perennial playoff / SB team.
This is probably what JD would love to do, draft his own FQB and never look back. Just comes down to how he evaluates these QBs.
Extending Sam now for anything more than $5-$8 million per year (which he wouldn't do) is ludicrous. And he has no good reason to be low balled either.
Start with that. Why would Sam refuse a $5-$8/mpy extension? I mean, if he's the worse QB in the NFL and about to be out of the league, why would he turn down 8 million dollars?
Because he and his agent are smart enough to not low ball themselves when he's a free agent in a year. He could likely get the same on the open market. Aren't you a guy that believe he's worth a first round pick? If he has that sort of value, why wouldn't you think he can make at least $12-15 million on the open market?
Option 2 is a pipe dream. Never happening unless Douglas is looking for a way to get fired. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
