Dude. This just defies logic if you're looking at skill and productivity. Wentz would've won an MVP in the SB year if he didn't get hurt. Winston was a 5,000 yard passer and just completed a year of QB school. Goff similarly has had a couple excellent years in the NFL. Sam hasn't accomplished nearly anything (an OK rookie year is about it).
That situation in Philly was a dumpster fire. They never should've drafted Reagor (should've been Jefferson) and they shouldn't have drafted a gadget QB with their 2nd round pick. I know Jets fans will collectively lose their minds if we traded for Wentz, but depending on the price it's not a bad move at all.
I don't really know what to believe in Philly regarding Wentz's attitude and what not. Maybe he really is a douchebag? It had to be tough to get that big money after Foles went out and went toe to toe with Tom Brady. Imagine walking back into that locker room. Especially when he didn't have the coaches support all year long. But again - maybe the reports are right and he's a shithead. Either way, I agree. I think Wentz will be a productive NFL starter again if he escaped.
You can take this FWIW but my roommate did some business with him back in like March or April and my buddy said Wentz is one of the nicest guys he's ever done business with and my roommate hated just about everyone he did business with but he said that about Wentz. Now obviously we have no idea how that would translate into an NFL locker room but I figured it was worth mentioning.
I think a lot of it has to trickle down from the guys that won with Foles (Alshon Jeffery, Jenkins, Kelce, Lane Johnson, etc.). Maybe not because Miles Sanders also wasn't a fan but who knows. He just doesn't come across as controversial as reported.
Regardless of his struggles, Wentz will still command a big salary, even if the compensation isn't that high. I wouldn't take the gamble that he can return to form, over drafting a QB who I think could be better - and I think all of the top 5 QBs this year could be better. The odds of Wentz turning things around on the Jets aren't much better - if at all - than Darnold achieving his potential, and Wentz would cost a lot more over a 3-5 year contract he would demand.
@Footballgod214 asked what I would do if I was the owner/GM. I took Lamar, but I would be fine with Sam, Wentz, Goff or Winston from that list. I think I would take Sam over those other guys. Winston is interesting though. If he could somehow reduce his mistakes, he could be a top QB.
This is the problem with Wentz. If you trade for him, he's your guy for three years and that's it as there's really no out and you're banking on him returning to forum. How are they not much better of turning things around? Again. Wentz had an MVP type season and has been 5x the player that Darnold has. The odds of him turning it around are exponentially better even though the risk/reward is higher when considering the contract and capital needed to get him.
Just because he didn't explicitly state that doesn't mean his opinion is not influenced by what he has heard within league circles in terms of trade value, aka general league perception. Do you think he originally came up with Sam was worth a 2 out of thin air? No, he's probably heard from his sources that heading into the offseason that was Sam's value. That has since changed after seeing what Stafford went for. Again, a draft analyst saying "Player X is slightly better than Player Y" is much different than a league insider giving his opinion on what Player Y would fetch in a trade. I'm not twisting your words, you said McShay had a bad take about Watson v Darnold (which I totally agree with btw) and then used that as the part of your argument as to why we shouldn't listen to Schefter's opinion. Just to clarify, what I said in regard to the people on this board was meant in no way to be a dig at them. I agree in that I think most people on this board are more knowledgeable about football in general than the common person. However, I will never think that anyone on this board (myself included) is more plugged-in to the NFL than a guy like Schefter. I've said from the get-go that he may be wrong. I've never once said, "well, Schefty said Sam's worth a late 1 so that's definitely what we're getting!!". My stance all along is that we shouldn't discredit what Schefter has said and we should especially not discredit what he said because McShay said Watson is only slightly better than Darnold.
The point is that you can't actually separate those aspects. In order to get Wentz you have to invest a considerable amount and there is certainly no guarantee he'll return to form, and his current level of play is less than Darnold's. Darnold has holes in his game, but with good coaching and much better talent - which he will be receiving now - he could still become a very good QB and he doesn't require any more of an investment than has already been made.
When i see stuff like this I continue to ask, why aren't we putting a pkg together for #1. I would think it would be smaller than Watson suggestions plus we get a rookie deal
Wentz’s deal has an out after next season. Team can save $7M on their cap next year if they move on from him.
Where do you see that? Overthecap shows as a $59 million dead cap hit/$24 million in 2022. It also shows those numbers as $34 million/$9 million post June 1 but I'm not sure how that works.
not a bad idea there. I think people are just salty about botching the tank and having to trade for the no.1 when we shoulda had it
I get the logic but there's also a big difference between trading a lot for a proven star and trading a lot for a complete unknown.
I don't think Lawrence is actually that much better - if at all - that some of the other prospects. Even if his projected value is somewhat higher than the others, it's still not proven like Watson's is.
I imagine Jacksonville has a death grip on that pick to the point where they'll push the package upwards as much as they can.
at least half that list is laughable. and darnold is 24 and a former first round pick not too long ago. so yes, darnold has first round value because of potential.
I have mixed thoughts about that. On one hand, Wentz has talent. He was drafted high for a reason. OTOH, he has had a problem staying healthy, and may be uncoachable if any of the comments I've seen about him are true. I would definitely rather trade for Watson or draft one of Fields, Wilson or Lance before I traded for Wentz. It could work out for him and us with the Jets, but I would be extremely skeptical and worried about it, and not happy. If there were no other options, then sure, if the cost isn't too high. I wouldn't give up anything higher than the #23 for him however, and I'd have to think long and hard before giving that up.
