He came close to it saying that Deshaun should just take the money and play for Houston and shouldn't seek a trade as if he didn't try to force GB to trade him to the Vikings. I used to really like Favre, but I think he's a hypocritical moron now.
The game vs Clemson just confirms this. He got drilled in the 2nd quarter, most likely a rib injury, and came back and had a phenomenal game. Immediately changed my opinion of him.
The top 3 QB's for me in this draft are very close. I would not be surprised if any 1 of these 3 are considered the Top Dog from 2021 a few years from now. Comes down to situation they end up in. Does the OC mesh well with their strengths? Do they have good talent for weapons? How is their OL? 1.Trevor Lawrence 2.Zach Wilson 3.Trey Lance I am liking Lance the more I watch him.
I have to agree. Fields is all business and if we take a QB at 2 he’s the guy. Fields isn’t a perfect prospect by any means but I feel he has all the tangibles and intangibles to be Russell Wilson type player. That’s his ceiling for sure. His floor is pretty low though unfortunately so it’s still a gamble but at this point if we can snag a 2nd or a late 1st for Darnold I’m all for taking Fields and signing CJ Beathard to help him learn the offence.
I've seen a lot of people post that the Jets need to build the team "the right way." This usually involves trading out of the #2 for multiple picks and keeping Darnold (to build around him). Or I've seen people say they should pick Sewell or even Smith at #2. Why isn't taking one of the highly rated QB prospects at #2 and then using every draft pick that's left to draft need players not considered building the team the right way? I have no problem letting the rookie sit for a year while they learn the NFL game (which used to be the norm). I'd prefer to trade Sam for a pick that we could use to further build the team and sign a stop gap veteran, but I wouldn't even be opposed to starting Sam while the rookie sits. How is this not building the team the "right way?" I think that most of the "build the team first" guys are hardcore Darnold supporters. Their main goal is to keep Sam because they believe he will suddenly transform into a FQB. I contend that his mechanics are so bad that it will take at least two years to rehabilitate him, assuming that's even possible. Meanwhile next year's QB class next looks very weak and chances are we won't have the #1 pick. Kicking the can down the road on the QB position is not an option. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
It's very much building the right way. It all depends how JD views each prospect - including Sam - and what his limit is to trade for Watson. Every option is on the table as far as I'm concerned.
I prefer the bold approach as well. But that includes a bold face truth in that they are sitting no matter what and fan/media pressure does not affect that plan. Or the ol 'we're eliminated from playoff contention lets see what the kid has' mantra that forces organizations into playing in December against teams that are gearing up to get into the playoffs and are hitting their stride. It is a bit of a problem with the way rookie contracts are structured as well which is why they play immediately. A franchise has three years to evaluate the player before extending them into big money or picking up the absurdly highly paid fifth year option for first round picks. It's become the norm that players want to be extended now after their third year. It take a lot of commitment to avoid playing them in year one for all of those reasons but I think it greatly benefits players. It would've benefitted Sam a ton, who regressed in his second year starting at USC and likely needed another collegiate year anyway.
I think that's a fair statement, but I'd like to believe that you could better eveluate the player after he's taken a year to learn the system and the NFL. At least let him sit 6-8 games. Great post by the way. You make excellent points for why teams start their 1st round QB's. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
Forgive my ignorance, but is Campbell someone with enough superior insight that his inputs should worry us?
I wouldn't say he's got super high level sources but I'd imagine he's in the know and has some insight and speaks to some reliable people in the league. He's obviously not Schefter but I also don't think he's making things up and citing BS. He is apart of one of the most highly trafficked draft sites out there.
He is a scout, but at the end of the day, it is just another opinion. And looks like he is basing is largely on the fact he originally projected him low before Zach blew up last year, and also on alleged poor character, which is a myth, and has largely been debunked. Ultimately even he backed off his idiotic second round prediction to say this: "Given his skill set and ability to interview well, Wilson should continue to rise throughout the leadup to the 2021 NFL Draft. He could be the second quarterback selected and will be some team's franchise quarterback to build around. Wilson has the skill set and ability to be a solid starter in the NFL." So, now Wilson is up to "solid starter in the NFL". So, I would not worry too much about the guy. For every guy like that, there is someone who likes Wilson over Lawrence. And Theismann is no chopped liver either (even though I would still take Lawrence). Watch after 6 minute mark.
Field awareness not good Ball Placement on and off. Doesn't throw with anticipation. Arm not special. The last two combined make me think it won't be easy for him at the next level. If you don't have an elite arm you better see the field and throw the ball on time. His main NFL plus is athleticism. Upside is low end starter...so I would value him around where Drew Lock went.
I don't know Campbell's resume but he seems pretty well connected as he has been around a long time so if he cites three FOs expressing concerns over Wilson's character I would be concerned. In the past some his scouting reports have seemed occasionally ahead of the curve but others way off base. I know for years some people on this board have expressed dislike towards Campbell. IMO watching his mocks in the past and hearing him on some podcasts he seems to have an ego and be a bit hard headed. So frankly, I do not know what to make of it. The fact that no one else to my knowledge has written about character concerns tells me there is nothing to it. But, we are early in the process. But I am sure JD will dig much much deeper and if Wilson is a bad guy I don't think he will take him as an immature QB would have an especially tough time with NYC media.
FWIW It looked like a lot of folks who have itk sources completely disagreed with his take on Wilson's character concerns
I will trust Tony Pauline who is really locked into scouting. He says it’s Lawrence and everyone else. There are concerns about Wilson’s arm strength.
Tony Pauline is not very good. I've been reading or hearing about his stuff for years on Jets sites, and he's wrong more than he's right. He's another "name" like Kiper and O'Shay whom I have no idea how they keep their jobs, because they aren't very good at them.
The field awareness comment is a bunch of crap imo. Fields is very aware. Sometimes I've seen him get so locked onto scanning downfield for an open receiver that he doesn't sense the pressure perhaps as much as he should, but his overall field awareness is not a problem imo. The comment about his arm not being special is a bunch of crap as well. He fits the ball into tight windows, is excellent on deep passes and I've seen him throw a lot of dimes. Low end starter is laughable imo.
Watch Wilson's film yourself, forget about this scout. The guy makes 50+ yard throws downfield with ease, saw him make 60 and 65 yard passes effortlessly. He is also the most accurate passer 20+ yards in several decades and made a lot of them this year. Now, I agree Lawrence is obvious #1 choice, no argument there, but when someone tells you Wilson's arm is a concern, they simply have not watched enough of their film.
