There is a lot to climb before getting to these ceilings. And more so for Lance than for Fields. At least Fields showed ability to play against tough defenses even when his team is not vastly superior to the opponents. Lance only played for one year against tier 3 competition, which much superior talent around him, and ran 37% of the time. His passing game is HUGE concern to translate. Even Wilson, for all the talk about him not being in Power 5, has faced 4 teams this year with top 50 FSB defenses, and 2 ranked teams, and played well each time. Wilson and Fields are hands down lower risk than Lance, with similar ceiling, and therefore need to be picked first. Lance is worth a shot too though once these guys are gone, though I am not sure he goes ahead of Mac Jones due to aforementioned risk involved.
I like it. My preference is slightly different a- We trade down to 4 and take Wilson or Fields b- We stay at two and take the QB of our choice c- We trade down further, load up on WR/TE/OG/ Take a QB with the 23rd. d- Watson comes in for 3 firsts and Sam. Not a penny or player more In either case bring in a vet QB in camp that can carry us for a year till our shinny new QB is ready
I am not sure how this can possibly be a preference. Most likely evaluation will conclude Jets prefer one over the other. If Atlanta moves up, what if they take our guy? Then you lose the guy who you thought gives you the best chance. Further, what if Miami or someone who trades up with them, take the second one with #3. All of the sudden JD looks like an absolute incompetent moron. As much as I like to try to squeeze as much as I can out of this pick, we cannot get too greedy. Just getting the second best QB in this QB rich draft and with it a good chance at FQB is going to have to be enough.
The more mocks I see with players dropping lower than I would expect them to the more it might make sense to move up from either 23 or round two for the right player. Moving down from 2 makes it much easier to move up later.
I know he's not really an option for us at #2 but Lawrence is going to get ruined in Jacksonville. They've assembled a terrible coaching staff.
to be fair active players tend to give more respect to older players. same is seen in pro bowl voting when aging vets get in over rookies who had better seasons
Why can't we afford to trade up? In this scenario, we would be getting a far superior WR & either Fields or Wilson. We would still have most of our picks. I like Lance too. We can also sign a top WR to pair with Smith. My preference is Wilson. I just want one of the QBs, so I don't care if we trade up or not. But I'm not overpaying for Watson when we have the extremely valuable #2 pick. As for defense, we need fast linebackers who can tackle. Not necessarily an edge, but someone in the hybrid mold who can both rush the passer and cover underneath routes. We need a stud. Taking Devonta Smith is not awful. He will be a superstar.
Stumbled across this: https://www.si.com/college/byu/news/february-mock-draft-projections-for-zach-wilson Basically according to pretty much every mock now Zach is becoming consensus #2 overall pick, I don't see much dropping here. The guy is expected to pass the interview portion and workouts with flying colors. What if he comes in at like solid 6-2/6-3 215-220lb, which I actually think will happen. Then you have Lawrence as consensus #1, Zach consensus #2, then draft really starts from there. Could be Fields as #3. You trade down from #2 to even #4 or 5, not only you do not get consensus #2 QB, you are missing out on 3 top QB prospects. That to me would be pretty much the worst case scenario.
Folks, I remember this discussed before, but not sure if consensus was reached as at that point I have not yet looked at Zach Wilson as potential #2. With official measurements coming only on March 26 during BYU pro day, what does it look like his real height is based on below? Keep in mind Brees officially measured as 72.3 inches. (6 feet and 3/10 of an inch). 'Bout 6'2" or so? Could he even be 6'3"?
If we haven't got Watson or Fitz/Tyrod/Other onboard come draft day then we have to stick at #2 and take Wilson. If we have got a bridge/Decent QB in the building then maybe you can get cute and think about trading out of #2 and staying in range of Sewell, Chase, Smith, Pitts, Insert other premium rookie and taking a flyer later on in round 1.
I 100% agree. To reach those ceilings is incredibly difficult I was more comparing the players to a NFL starting QB based on their game and their build.
That’s just what’s been floated in the media.. Bosa with picks and Jimmy would be a good deal for the Texans to start a rebuild.. 49ers desperately need a QB to be a relevant offence
For one thing, trading up is a fan-type thing, not something the best GMs do very often. IMO there are only 4 times when one should trade up: 1) To get a stud QB; 2) to get a stud LT; 3) to get a stud Edge/DE; 4) If your team is already a playoff-level team, or one player away, and has a glaring hole at a position where one has tried for a couple of years to fill it via the draft and/or FA and been unsuccessful. Any other time, it's just wasting draft capital. I'm not giving up Mims to get Smith. Mims could wind up being a better WR in the NFL than Smith. I believe that Mims will develop into a #1 WR. In giving up #23 (I don't believe Atlanta makes the trade for #34 and Mims, and probably wouldn't for #23 and Mims as I think they'll look to take a QB at #4), you're preventing the Jets from drafting a top notch OG, or maybe Kadarius Toney or Pat Freiermuth who could be as big a weapon as Smith, or maybe a DE that Saleh covets. I'd rather all the picks in the 1st 3 rounds be used on offense, but Saleh and JD may have other ideas. There are also a lot of very good WRs in this draft. Falling in love with one and burning draft capital and one of the few players we have with a lot of potential to get him is unwise imo. Smith was a great player in college and has great character. That said, he was the #4 WR on Alabama in 2019, two of the three guys who were ahead of him on the draft chart haven't done much in the NFL so far, and most importantly, has a very thin frame. He has the skinniest legs I've ever seen on someone who wasn't famine-stricken or starved practically to death in a Nazi concentration camp. His legs look like an injury waiting to happen. He could be a great player in the NFL, or he could spend much, if not most, of his career on IR. I'm not trading up for a player like that. We'll just have to agree to disagree whether taking Smith would be awful. It would be typical Jets' luck to trade Mims and a couple of picks to move up to #4 and take Smith, then Smith spend most of his career on IR and wind up retiring in a few years or the Jets move on, and meanwhile, Mims becomes a star, and the players Atlanta took with the other picks become very good players as well. We also need more than 2 WRs and Crowder. I'd rather have Mims, Robinson/Godwin, Kadarius Toney, and maybe another WR in a middle round and Crowder, than Crowder, Robinson/Godwin and Smith. I understand not wanting to overpay for Watson. I'd love to have him, but I don't want to overpay, either. Rather than overpay, I'd rather JD stay put at #2 and take one of Fields, Wilson or Lance, or if he has all 3 rated pretty equally, maybe trade down to #4, and then take one of them. The danger with that is Miami could trade out of #3, and the team we trade #2 to will probably take a QB and we could wind up having to accept the 3rd QB who is left. I'd rather JD stay put at #2 and take the QB he likes the best. Then use the other picks to build around that QB.
If the Jets draft Wilson, we probably will be in the same boat in 3 years and it will be 3 very high draft pick QBs that Jets missed on.
That's why I want to sell the farm for Watson. 3 first round picks and over a decade of misery or 3 first round picks and you have your guy you sought right now.
