Some of you guys are way too invested in the chart value. It's an OK baseline but it was also invented by the Cowboys and Jimmy Johnson for the Cowboys and Jimmy Johnson. It's not something to live by. Of course the #2 pick is way more valued than the #23 pick. But there are so many other factors surrounding it's value (draft class, current roster construct, etc.) that change with every team every year. This is also unchartered territory in terms of the draft as well as the player in question. Because of the pandemic this is now the hardest draft in NFL history to assess. Opt outs, teams only playing 6-7 games, no physical combine, inconsistent college practice schedules and more factors that are incredibly difficult to account for. Even if you want to try to use the chart - remember all those things.
I"m no expert but the #2 pick is very valuable. Detroit would love the OSU quarterback and is only at #7. A switch of the #2 for #7 is a big jump but the Lions have draft capital. Their second and third this year and #1 next year. Not the Rams' #1 but the theirs. But as I said before Joe Douglas doesn't need my help.
Why would the lions draft a QB after taking on Off and his awful contract? Seems counter productive to me.
The Niners seem to be the most desperate team. I am sure our coach can think of a few players he would like to get back from them in addition to picks.
much less actually. 3rd this year = 120 1st in 2022 = 340 1st in 2023 = 150 but offloading goffs contract is negative value. like when the texans paid a 2nd round pick for the browns to eat oswilers contract. for goff i'd say it's worth a 3rd since he's still a decent QB. so at best the value was 490 for stafford. right in line with what we've seen with others. only the mack deal cracked 600. watson going for the 2nd pick alone would be more then 5 times stafford value which is pretty fair in it's own right but it'll be a package involving a lot from both sides
Not sure what your post means to the discussion that was happening tbh, as it wasn't about them taking Goff to get the deal done but would they take a QB when the have Goff for two years.? They still have to pay the man and you expect them to then go all-in on one of these QB's this year to either sit him behind Goff who nobody rates whilst still paying him a fortune, they have to pay him for two years before the zero cap hit cut in 23. Next year you would think they would take one and sit him maybe but not two years. Hey, just my opinion though. And just to add further, I don't really care one way or the other tbh it isn't a Lions forum after all.
You are correct. A lions beat writer said the Rams gave up the 2023 1st rounder for taking Goff's salary and the 2022 1st rounder and this years 3rd rounder were the compensation for Stafford. which puts the Stafford trade value right in line with all the other trades you had listed.
I have seen a lot of talk about how Watson's contract which starts at $40 mil for the next couple years after this one is reasonable. Goff has already taken the Rams to a Superbowl but I have seen a lot of talk about how bad his contract (about half the price) is horrible. A lot of teams will walk a fine line between clever and stupid as the QB carousel continues to turn. Given how narrow the championship window is every dollar spent and every pick is vital. I think a lot of people want easy answers but they just don't exist.
depends what reasonable is. josh allen and lamaar jackson will be paid soon and probably make more then watson but less then mahomes. not sure who else is coming up on a big contract. watson will likely be the 4th highest paid QB in the NFL. I wouldn't say reasonable but more pretty apt
Well, they would be pretty stupid to release him after 1 surely and get a cap hit of 15m but WTF do I know. Goff may even perform
I wouldn't go that far. I like Matt Stafford as much as the next guy but the fact that the Rams were willing to give up two first rounders to make the swap is not a good sign for Goff. With that said, he is a young guy who is athletic with a good arm. The biggest difference between the top QBs is mental. A guy who is smart enough to scan the field and hit his fourth receiver without getting creamed by super quick pass rushers is hard to find. Some guys like Fitzmagic seem to figure things out on their second or third contract. With a change of scenery Goff could take another team to the promised land but until we see more from him there are many reasons to be pessimistic about his future.
they got extra compensation for taking his contract over. detriot is in full teardown mode. new HC, new GM, new QB etc. dump cap space, compile picks draft and build a team. If goff was seen as someone to build around the rams wouldn't have dumped him and gave away premium picks just to get a new QB who is 7 years older then goff
Goff's contract guarantees his compensation this year so they would keep him as a free backup instead of cutting him if they can't find a trading partner. Next year they could dump him and take about a $10 mil cap hit if they really want to be rid of him.
Because moving Jax off of Lawrence will probably cost at least the next 5 drafts. There's 0 reason for Jax to throw away that plus Lawrence doesn't have any strife with the ownership there, and it sounds like Watson hates the owner of the Texans (Cal McNair)
