No doubt about that. The Texans will demand that #2 pick as part of a deal. They won't give Watson away so it will cost the Jets.
OK so we trade the farm for Watson. Now what? How do you plan on building around him with 5th round picks?
Barnwell is one of the biggest Jets-haters in the industry (He ranked the Jets the 7th best option, even though he said their deal was the easiest/best to make, based entirely on "I'm not sure Watson would want to go there), but his analysis of CHI doesn't make them look like a really viably destination:
Define farm? They have a lot of picks in the early Rd's in 2021 and 2022 including multiple 1st Rd picks. JD is going to have to determine what he wants to part with. Houston will not give him away and their is no guarantee any of the QB's in this draft are as good as Watson.
In my scenario the Jets get Watson this year and have all their picks from the second round on. Next year they would have one #1 pick along with the rest of the picks from the second round on. You can't build a team around Watson with that? Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
As long as he doesn't go to Miami, I'm happy. If the Jets get him, I don't know what I'll do with myself. I'm thinking a bender.
I don't mind your scenario at all. No matter what we do, it's going to come down to finding those diamonds in the rough that all the good teams seem to get in every sport. However, I still think trading a lot when we don't have a solid foundation in place is not a recipe for success. At least a team like Miami has a decent foundation & a solid coaching staff in place so I can see them trading a lot for him.
the whole "we would have to give away the farm for watson so he isn't worth it" narrative is overblown imho. Dude is one of the elite qb's in the league, is still in his prime and seems to be a good guy with a good head on his shoulders. you obv are going to have to give up a lot to get him. we will have plenty left over in the form of promising young players and draft picks to surround him with talent, ESP if Saleh is going to be the coach we all hope he is. I have faith in Douglas to draft and sign the necessary talent.
Miami has less cap space, a crappy OL, mediocre at best WR's and no running game. And when they absolutely had to win a game to get to the post season they spit the bit. I don't think they are as close as you do. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
There was no reason to worry about the contract in the first place. The play the Jets would get from Watson would be worth every penny. He is Mahomes level good.
Jets are the favorites to land Watson as of today, but Miami and others are in the race. Implied probably is 33% to the Jets, the highest it has ever been, which is great, but it also means 67% against.
I don't want to defend Miami but I did watch all their games since I live in South Florida. That team fought EVERY Week. You could say they spit the bit at the end but it was AT BUFFALO. Still went 10-6 after starting 0-2 & could have won more. Miami was able to find diamonds in the rough and they have a great coaching staff. We have no idea how our coaching staff will be. Our defense needs LB's, CB, & Edge. The offense needs mostly an entire O-line, WR, TE, & RB. Also would be nice to have better special teams players too. So we need a lot. A LOT!!!!
Are people saying this kind of thing after 132 pages? If we are just left with 5th rounders after the trade I hope you're not JD
The Bears or Panthers don’t have the pieces that we do. Only way they could counteract our offer is if they offer 4 first round picks. At that point, we just walk away.
I think that depends on your definition of slow play. For sure it will happen before the draft but also very likely to happen before free agency. The Texans will want to know where they stand before signing players.
