I'm not that worried. But it's a big adjustment for a guy that wins on raw power. I'm also banking on the fact that they're going to use him on down blocks and get the interior lineman out and running. And incorporate some man to man drive blocking. He's too good at it not to utilize it as a strength.
I just hope this hire will speed up the process. Probably he will have a face to face with Watson and tell ownership if Watson is staying or going and from there the ball will roll. I don't expect this thing to stay in limbo. I believe we have 2 more weeks of this and than we are done.
Extremely bizarre hire. Pretty old for a first time head coach, hasn't been a coordinator since the 1980s at UTEP. Current receivers coach and passing game coordinator on a team that has bad receivers and haven't developed their young passer very well. This might be the first time in NFL history where they struggled to find someone to give the job to. Only saving grace is that he comes from two great staffs in being a long time receiver coach for Andy Reid and now a couple years with Harbaugh. Doubt he lasts more than two years.
Sorry nothing is going to speed anything up. The Jets will keep everything quiet until at least March. What's the hurry?
I’m just amazed at some of the craziness here to get Watson. Now trade Q, or Becton. Sure why not? whenever we get an absolute keeper we want to start all over again. Fuck me, that is not the way to build a team. Hope Watson stays put and we move on with JDs long term plan.
I would be on that train (if I could ignore the fact he wants to go to a challenger not a rebuild) for our #34 pick. If the lions wanted to throw him into some #7 for #2 pick action with additional second round picks included then I'd hear that offer as it keeps us in range of a gamechanger in the draft and some assets to move up from the Seattle pick if we want to pick up one of the second tier rookie QB's to sit behind him or flesh out our roster somewhat.
A couple other facts. He was the first black quarterback at Vanderbilt in 1970 and one of the first in the SEC. He was the receivers coach for the 2014 Chiefs, the first team since 1964 to go an entire season without their receivers catching a touchdown. Seems like a great guy. A lot of people in the legitimate football world have great things to say about him. Still seems like a reach but maybe he's a Herm Edwards style leader.
Everything I read about him after hearing that he was a finalist suggested a really awesome dude. But definitely not a hire that would give me hope as a Texans fan. If a cutting edge franchise with universally revered management made this move I'd be skeptical, but also intrigued. That a franchise with an enormous level of toxicity, seemingly in the middle of self-immolation, landed on him gives me a whole lot of pause.
I want Watson as badly as anyone, and I understand that apparently Watson and Culley formed a bond at the Pro Bowl once, but even if the Jets don't acquire him this has me over here chuckling.
