If JD really wants Watson, I just hope his poker face is good. Play up serious interest in Stafford or any of the QB's in the draft and try to get the Texans asking price down as far as possible. Watson is a helluva football player at the most important position in the game. JD does not strike me as the type of guy and pull a Ditka. Either trading his entire draft or wearing a wig...

If Watson plays his entire career like he did this year, sure, but this was by far his best season statistically. I'm going to hold off just a little while before I decide that a season where he averages more than 300 yards passing per game is going to be typical. Rivers playing all those years in San Diego has led to him being very underappreciated. His numbers are actually quite comparable to Watson's over a far longer time period. His play in the postseason was clearly not as good, and for that he has gotten deserved criticism. My point wasn't that Watson isn't off to an exceptional start to his career - he clearly is. And most QBs who can play at that level for a long time will naturally win a Super Bowl, although (as Aaron and Drew know all too well) often it's only one. My only point was that Marino isn't the only great QB to never win one.
I just think when you consider he’s 1st all time in completion percentage, 2nd all time in an rating, and has been to a pro bowl in each of his 3 full seasons all while not having good coaching or oline, saying it’s based off just 1 season isn’t true. he has 2 playoff losses. 1 was to the chiefs where he had a great game, built a big lead, 3tds zero turnovers, 31 points, but the Texans d couldn’t stop mahomes.
yah you may be too young! you can’t compare stats across generations...the game was radically different. so when I see comments like “he has the best completion percentage in history”, yeah ok, great. Doesn’t mean that much really. He has a better rate than Montana, Marino, Fouts, Steve Young....so what? He’s not better than they were. Shit Darnold at 60% probably has a better completion rate than a bunch of hall of farmers. Just a different game. Not to downplay Watson...I do like him a lot, and that’s the guy I was praying Mac would have drafted instead of a box safety. but after all of this noise, I’m not rushing to give up a ton of picks for him....some articles are saying stupid shit like 4 first rounders plus more picks plus Q....it’s insanity. I’m sure Houston will demand....doesn’t mean they’ll get it. For as much as they have the upper hand, they’re really in kind of a tough spot if Watson pressed the issue. I just don’t buy the arguments that we’d still have plenty of draft picks to rebuild. We won’t. Period. Forget all the 4th and 5th rounders....letting go of three first rounders hurts....it leaves us two in the next three years. That would be shitty for even an 8-8 team to continue to replenish....we are so far behind the eight ball that we have to restock....we need MORE picks than average, not LESS. We are still,playing catch-up. doesn’t mean it can’t be done....we can use free agency a bit, but that hasn’t been the road to success for many teams...least of all us. I just don’t see it in JDs DNA to give up a ton....I think he’ll talk and negotiate...and then we’ll see.
Surely by having a more competent offence it would help the defence by being on the field of play longer, conversely reducing our points deficit? With Gase and his record number of double digit losses gone, we are already going to be better off lol
The Jets can play the waiting game because they have so many options. It's not like it's Watson or bust for the Jets. They can easily wait & or pull out of any trade talks & go in a different direction. It's not like the Texans are holding them hostage. JD has done a great job negotiating trades. Williams to the Giants & Adams to the Seahawks. He won't over pay...unless Woody tells him to, but I think those days are over, The Johnsons trust JD's judgement.
C.J. Mosley has played in 2 games in 2 years and he's going to be 29 before next season starts. He was a great player 2 years ago but that is an eternity in NFL years. I think he's 50/50 to be worthless moving forward.

A 4th will be better than cutting him and doesn't his wage increase massively the year after? I have zero loyalty to a guy who has played less than a half of football for the Jets while the first season was very unfortunate the second is a little bit less so, even if he suits up for us, I wouldn't be shocked to see him get a 'huge hit' and pike off again.
pretty sure brees was a FA signing by Saints, so Saints didn't give up draft capital. i also don't remember the status of the Saints at the time ie whether they were full of holes or just missing that QB
I'll add that i don' t think it will sit well in a locker room for a leader to opt out (which in and of itself is fine) but then to show up maskless etc shortly thereafter in a video guy got paid for doing nothing id be surprised to see him play for us again

The opt out rule actually puts the contract on hold, so the 2020 contract year gets pushed to 2021. He did get a salary advance from the now-2021 salary year but that is money that he won't make this year.
few other not so random thoughts on the potential dynamics one, not even sure if this is legal, but the whole situation would change if there were some way to restructure Watson's contract to give us more flexibility to build in the near term; we'd also need to ensure the trade was reasonable in terms of draft capital. somehow restructuring to give the young guy more on the backend would help us, i would think, Still think Houston needs this trade more than we do as much as i love the player. So not willing to give the farm for him two, the team just seemed to get normal where HC reports to GM who reports to owner. Now we have a situation where Watson is pissed because he didn't get heard on a GM and coach move only to want to go to an organization where those are set. I totally understand Watson's frustration but you have to admit that's a bit strange all around (he might like JD and Saleh but truth be told they haven't accomplished anything yet; Watson would like them just on reputation). ANd i don't think Douglas and Saleh want Watson in on the inner circle of a rebuild when it comes to team-building. Personally the only two players i would put on that tier would be Brady and Mahomes and in both cases I don't think they would need to demand a voice,. I suspect the organization would seek it out and nothing would be in the media
The Jets can't really wait. There will be a quick bidding year once the league starts. They obviously shouldn't appear desperate, but when this trade is ready to happen, it's going to happen whether the Jets want to dive in or not. Other wise he's going to Miami.
