No. Who the hell knows what was going through Rodgers' head; he could've just committed to a throw not knowing if they were going to go for it on 4th. Maybe he would've decided to tuck and run on 3rd and goal rather than try to throw it to the end zone.
There's obviously no way to know what the Packers are going to do this offseason. They clearly have the ability to create a large amount of cap space through cuts, reworking contracts, and extending players, and, as much as any other team, have the incentive to win now. For you to be claiming with certainty that the will be less talented next year unless they get pro bowl play from 3 rookies is not based in any fact whatsoever.
The cap is a lot easier to navigate than people make it out to be. It's also not some foreign concept for Green Bay to bring rookies along slowly and watch them develop into really good players in year two and three. They've been doing it for several decades now. They mostly retain their players and draft replacements in advance like they did with Dillon so when an expiring contract comes along (Jones) that they don't think is worthy of a large extension. Rinse and repeat. It hurts them in the short-term and I think their draft this past year was poor given the state of the team, but they'll be NFC contenders next year again assuming Rodgers is still there. I wonder if they'll pursue someone like OBJ. I'd imagine he could be had cheap relative to his talent and could be a missing piece. I'd assume he's matured enough to want to go somewhere and try to win a championship - similar to Moss when he went to New England.
cutting players doens't make them better. nor does letting their great players walk. The "moving money" will hurt them long term but stop them from losing 8 starters. maybe they squaek by only losing 4 but leveraging the future to do it. either way they will still be a worse team next year. that's how the NFL gets its parity.. right now you sound like this
they did it in the past with a different GM who was retired (and sadly died this week). either way there is no running from the cap. it's not the NBA. you pay for it eventually always. I'm fully away how the cap works but there is 0 way to ever get rid of paid money and you can only defer for so long. yes you can get creative for the now but you always have to pay for it. They could extend rodgers for 5 years and turn his salary to a signing bonus and give him the minimum salary and cut about 30 mil off the cap alone doing that. but eventually they will pay it
That's pretty funny. But the reality of the situation is that the Packers are able to manipulate their players' salaries to avoid any significant loss in talent going into next season and have every reason to do so to make another title run with one of the greatest QBs of all time coming off an MVP season. Do you think you know more about the Packers than Pete Dougherty?
where did pete say he wouldn't lose any starters? i bet you he hasn't because he knows he will. there is only so much moving you can do. mind you it's not his fault. he lost 30 mil in expected cap space like every team has. covid really hurt teams that were close to the cap. without covid they would be 3 mil under the cap right now. and could have moved enough around to sign rookie and bring back linsley and only lose lazard and jones and king. but now they are going to lose a lot. at least 4 of their starters
The better teams in the league shuffle money around to navigate the cap with ease. Yes, some of them do it poorly and eventually bang themselves into the ground like we did in 2009-2010 and the Saints have appeared to do. But it's not impossible and it always doesn't shake out like that. The Packers can do it so that they shuffle a lot of cap money into a year when they realistically plan Rodgers to be gone and undergo a full rebuild season. I have no doubt that as long as the relationship doesn't sour and Rodgers stays, they're going to find a way to add more pro talent to that team.
Rodgers is just trying to put pressure on the GM to do everything possible to make him happy. I get it after the Packers completely wasted their first round pick last year. Who knows how that game ends if they had taken a CB.
yeah he did not have a good game at all but he's been really banged up this season and was great last year. king missed with with a quad injury, has deal with an achilles injury and a back injury. he didn't even practice friday before the game. I wouldn't put too much stock on 1 bad game where he was banged up. he's a good CB he also plays opposite of alexander who is a top 5 CB in the NFL so that makes life tougher for him as well. it also came out cole beasley played with a broken leg in the playoffs for the bills he shouldn't have been playing
eventually you have to account for every dollar spent though you can try and stretch it so it's a little here and a little there but trying to clear a ton in 1 shot will always backfire on you. right now the saints and eagles are really screwed. a few other teams got screwed by covid like the packers along with the steelers, rams, and falcons. a few aren't great off becuase of it like houston and KC
Most of those stats were early in the yr when Miami did not want to p[ay him, Jones was injured so he was forced into action. Miami wants him on the edge going forward but he is playing behind X Howard and Byron Jones. Weird draft pick for the phins
I don't know who you think Pete Dougherty is. He's a beat writer for the Packers. I also don't think you understand the salary cap or the Packers roster as well as you think you do. No one has claimed the Packers won't lose starters. Every team that improves loses starters. Several of their beat writers have written about the moves they have the opportunity to make to create cap space. I listed some of those moves in this discussion. You've claimed over and over that you know today that the Packers are going to be less talented in 7 months. They aren't in "cap hell". They do have all their draft picks, and they are very likely to do everything they can to put their hall of fame QB coming off a ridiculous MVP season in position to compete for another Super Bowl.
Except it’s ridiculous to argue that in order for Rogers to be upset at one of the dumbest f’ing coaching decisions, possibly, in football history that he had to have played perfectly, and if not he has no grounds to criticize arguably the dumbest coaching decision in football history. That’s a pretty ridiculous criteria if that is what you are arguing.
I seen his stuff. nothing said they wouldn't lose starters. all he does is talk about how they can create cap with restructures. I wouldn't call it cap hell. maybe I was a little overly agressive with that term but it's still in a bad spot capwise
Its not even in the argument for dumbest decision is football history. Rodgers is being a poor loser and a cry baby. I'd laugh if the Packers traded him to the Texans for Watson.
rodgers wants a raise. that's where the bitching is coming from. might make sense for both sides. since watson is making 39 mil a year on his deal and mahomes 45 mil rodgers is the 6th highest paid QB in the NFL and he just won MVP. when dak signs rodgers will be the 7th highest paid. goff is making the same as rodgers and wentz and cousins are pretty close as well. GB could give him a raise to 40mil a year making him the 2nd highest paid while restricting his deal and pushing money back and extending it to free up cap space which they need to do. right now GB is 35 mil over the cap for 2021 and rodgers counts 37.5 mil. they could add 2 years on his deal (signing him through age 42) lower his base salary to 1 mil and give him a signing bonus of 50 mil lowering his cap by around 20 mil for this season.
His being a loser and a cry baby is completely separate from any criticism of the decision to essentially forfeit the game instead of actually trying to win it. what’s a worse decision than needing a TD to tie the game and instead of attempting it just giving the ball to the other team to end the game?
yup they aren't mutually exclusive. rodgers is being a poor loser and a cry baby but also that call is up there with the worst decisions I've ever seen in the playoffs. The decision of best case being down by 5 with 2 mins left and giving the ball back to arguably the best playoff QB of all time just needing a 1st down to seal the game is insane if he went for it and they miss at least TB is backed up. you still have the same 4 time outs for a stop to get the chance to tie it if they go for it and get it they can tie the game then just have to stop TB from scoring instead of just getting a 1st down if they take the FG at least try an onside kick to get your QB back the ball
