That is not a Shanahan QB.

it was disgusting... i mean... the majority of these passes are bnot only incomplete...
they are nowhere near to being even remotely catchable

It's also a downfield passing offense that works off of the run game. That's exactly what he's looking for.

Shanahan only has a short passing attack because Garroppolo blows and that's all he can do. When Shanahan was in Atlanta they winged the ball all over the yard. Passed more than they ran. He wants to throw the ball down field as most zone run play action teams do. He just hasn't had the horse to do it.

Where are all the guys stomping their feet about how we needed more play action?

I don't think it's a big deal. All the stats below come from ESPN's Next Gen Stats.

Out of 41 qualified passers, the average time to throw (meaning time spent holding the ball before the throw) is 2.6 seconds. Now let's get into actual QBs.

The top 5 fastest times to throw belong to:

    Ben Roethlisberger - 2.3s
    Ryan Fitzpatrick - 2.38s
    Andy Dalton - 2.5s
    Brandon Allen - 2.51s
    Nick Foles - 2.51s

Not exactly an elite list of guys besides Big Ben but his best days are behind him.

The bottom 5 times to throw belong to:

    Jalen Hurts - 3.11s
    Baker Mayfield - 3.05s
    Josh Allen - 3.04s
    Lamar Jackson 2.98s
    Russell Wilson - 2.97s

Two top 5 QBs in the NFL are bottom 5 in time to throw. Time to throw (TTT) has a lot of different variables factoring into it such as the offensive system or how well the OL can pass protect. So let's compare Fields's 3.1 time to Jimmy G, Nick Mullens/CJ Beathard, and Aaron Rodgers in 2019 and 2020 due to similarities in the offensive system

    2019
    Jimmy G- 2.65s
    Aaron Rodgers - 2.88s

    2020
    Jimmy G - 2.57s
    Nick Mullens - 2.63s
    Aaron Rodgers - 2.72s

Jimmy G and Nick Mullens are both physically limited QBs and Rodgers is arguably the most talented QB to ever step on a football field. If you watched Fields at OSU you can see he has solid protection and is trying to push the ball downfield. He's a big bodied QB and thinks he can just take hits and sling it downfield. Point being, TTT isn't a quality metric to evaluate a QB without context.

Gonna make a quick edit here as well. Mahomes TTT in 2020 was 2.89s and Watson's was 2.85s. College football is slower than the NFL; Fields is more than capable of making full field reads and getting the ball out. He's also a fantastic athlete and can extend plays.

The playaction itself worked; Sam is just an atrocious QB and has horrible deep ball accuracy. There were a handful of TDs left on the field in that video.

To be fair to Sam, he was the worst in just about every category, not just play action. And that includes throwing from clean pocket.

I think the sad reality is that Sam CAN make every throw, and he does have a big arm talent. And yes, that is why he was drafted #3. But over the last three years he consistently showed that he misses A LOT more and turns over the ball a lot more than average QB. And that was the problem stemming from College as well. He not only didn't improve that aspect in 3 years, he regressed.

I just don't see a way how JD does not move on from him as a starter after last year, considering we have #2 overall pick in the draft with good QBs available. Considering Trevor Lawrence declared this year, it is basically a #1 overall in any other draft. And this draft happens to be QB rich.

That is exactly my main worry with him. Many people praise him that he goes through his progression (fine) but he takes also so much time throwing his passes and that will never work in the NFL. He has the arm talent and the running talent but I question his execution and his thought process. Also his throwing motion is a bit longer than a guy like Wilson who can throws from all ways and adjust his motion depeding of the situation.

Can you provide the breakdown of that number? How many P.A. plays were there? From my observation there wasn't a lot of P.A. used by Gase. What that means is that if Darnold and the offense weren't used to running P.A. they're obviously not going to be very good at it. My understanding of the 49'ers/LeFleur offense is that they would use P.A. a lot in order to open up the running and passing game. I wouldn't assume that Darnold can't run it well at this point.

    Some film breakdown on Wilson:

TL;DW: Wilson has talent, can be "too cute" at times, but there's a foundation there.

Yeah man. He just sucks at it so it wasn't a big part of the playbook. And there were a bunch of people here complaining that we didn't run it enough.

Not to mention the running game has sucked but that's besides the point.

It is a concern about Fields for sure. I think he has to rid the superman complex of trying to throw 21 point touchdowns every play. But I think that's coachable and also at times a product of an offense that has two smaller speed receivers in an offense that's predicated on hitting plays down the field.

Not to mention he shrugs tacklers pretty easily in the pocket which will be harder to do in the NFL.

He reminds me a lot of the good version of Carson Wentz in his middle three years in the league. The problem with it is that it can spiral into the bad version of 2020 Carson Wentz if the player doesn't evolve from it and teams send more pressure leading to an inability to break the pocket or hang in there and make big plays when the pressures on.

Just about everything in our offense sucked last year but the worst part was watching Frank Gore run through the A Gap 187 times (HOLY MOLY HE HAD 187 CARRIES).

I wonder how much better this team would’ve been if they just ran Ty Johnson or Perine left behind Big Ticket.

Fields will be a special player if he’s given the right coaching. Just a gut feeling of mine. He’s got so much talent.

I would definitely put a slight dig against Fields for that, but ultimately it is not a huge deal. If he has a lot of time to throw, he can use it, as long as he is accurate, which he was completing 70% of passes. The slight dig is that he will not have this much time to throw in NFL as only Jalen Hurts took this long in the entire League. The good thing is the Fields is actually the 2nd most accurate passer in NCAA from clean pocket. So, the ability is there, though I agree there is a slight question mark if he can be as effective with a little less time.

I mean we cannot miss this selection and if we go QB it's basically hit or complete miss. In between does not work.

There are no perfect college QB but what I liked most of about the likes of Pat Mahomes, Josh Allen and Deshean Watson in their college tapes is how they adjusted their throws on all situation. They had the natural arm talent and not relying purely on clean pocket and perfect throwing techniques. Actually a QB perfectionist would cringe at watching them throws, back foot throws, not full arm extension, side arm throws, weird ass fuck throws. But the reality is that based on the situation they adjust their throwing motion to get the ball where it needs to be and they are very accurate passer in the process.

I simply don't see that with Justin Fields or Mac Jones but I do see that with Zach Wilson. It seems like he understand time and space better and he can adjust his throwing motion to get the ball in a hurry or adjust slightly his throwing motion to get the ball through.
