How many teams in the last 15 years won a Super Bowl without a very good QB? It's like 2-3. Possible, but very unlikely.

So what's the plan? Draft a QB every 4 years?

your right it wasn't a rookie deal but he was still less then 10% of the cap. you said elite Qbs win Sbs i pointed out that Qbs that outperform their contract and aren't paid proportionally win SBs. mine is factually correct. watson will never win a SB counting 20% against his teams cap.

This conversation is ridiculous. The vast majority of teams that win Super Bowls (like 90%) have very good QB's. We can nitpick about very good vs. elite all day, it's irrelevant. Very good is the minimum.

If you get a very good QB you pay him whatever it takes to keep him indefinitely.

brady won 6 in the past 18 years so kinda skews the stats. he made 9. half the Sbs in the past 18 years were represented by the pats. it's an outlier. but brady did it by taking less money then he deserved.

teams that pay very good QBs too much don't win SBs. outside of brady it seems the best way is by hitting on a QB in the draft which means drafting a QB gives us a better chance to win then trading for watson

the plan is to build a complete team. i'm just pointing out the chances of us winning a SB with watson is practically 0 unless he takes a paycut

Who's to say that Watson wouldn't renegotiate his contract at some point ala Brady.

I mean, assuming the health of all four current finalists, there's a good chance this year's Super Bowl produces a champion with a QB on a mega contract.

If we don’t get Watson, we should draft a QB every year till we get a franchise QB because you can’t really win without one (Flacco, Dilfer, Johnson and Foles are the exceptions in the last 20 years)

It's nice knowing we have only 2 more seasons of Mahomes before the Chief have practically no chance of winning another SB.

Pretty much. after 2023 he won't be winning much unless he takes a paycut or the cap explodes up. both highly unlikely.

this year they are already 18 mil over the cap to start and not much to cut. plus figure another 12 mil needed for rookies they need to cut 30 mil in cap space.
come 2022 they only have 22 players under contract and they'll only have about 15 mil to spend. the roster is going to start falling apart and they'll be a team with a great QB and not much of a supporting cast. probably win games in regular season but won't win a SB

1st it was that Dak Prescott is better than Deshaun Watson.

Then you went with you don't need an elite QB for sustained success.

    Now it's a cap problem.

The truth is that the cap will be going up dramatically as revenues shoot back up from the pandemic. The 2021 cap was expected to be as high as $242M, which would put Watson's cap % below 15%.

By your logic Mahomes is never going to win another Super Bowl. Elite QBs set contract records nearly every year and their teams continue to win their divisions and compete for super bowls.

    You're wrong.

His only argument is a QB never winning a Superbowl after his rookie contract ends and is paid megabucks. If Rodgers wins a SB this season (could happen), that argument will be null as well.

I can see Mahomes taking a paycut. And I would bet on the cap exploding by 2023.

The cap is going to shoot back up; the 2021 number is projected to be higher than the 175M the NFL initially stated before the season. Cap space is a number that is easily manipulated by NFL GMs. If a team wants a certain player to stay, they will find a way to fit it under their cap. Everyone said it would be impossible for Dallas to keep all their stars, and yet, they did.

According to OverTheCap, the Chiefs have 23 players under contract in 2022 with a projected 81M in cap space so I'm not sure where you're getting that 15M number from. Regardless, having a QB like Mahomes or Watson keeps you in the playoffs while you retool the roster. You skip the rebuild phase when you have a top tier QB like those guys.

Your take here is ice cold.

Wait a minute. I thought all we needed was a great QB and we'd win the SB.

You mean to tell me that great QBs that aren't on equally great teams don't go far?

I don't think anyone has said that all you need is a great QB to win the super bowl. Adding a top 3 25 year old QB who has the highest completion percentage of all time to a team that would have cap space and a pick in each round of the next 2 drafts would go a long way to making the Jets a contender.

But you seem to think that the Jets NEED 4 first round picks in the next 2 drafts or they are doomed.

I was being sarcastic. Someone said that a QB with a huge contract has next to no chance at winning the SB. In two years Mahomes extension kicks in and will be on a huge contract. So his championship run in over.
