I went on the Steelers forum, their fans have little interest in Watson, they want the Steelers to draft oline and bring back Ben for one more year. They are also interested in Mac Jones if he falls to them. It actually surprised me, I thought they would want Watson. It was only one of their forums though not all.
has anyone looked at the texans cap? they are pretty screwed. for 2021 they are 17.5 mil over the cap plus will need another 5-6 for rookies to sign so we'll call it 23 mil over. trading watson would mean they take a cap hit of -11 mil meaning they need to clear 34 million just to sign rookies and trade watson. even cutting watt and cooks only nets them 29.5 back so likely will happen but that still puts him nearly untradeable. what makes it worse is 2022. when watsons hit baloons. they will only have 9 mil in room so not even enough to sign rookies (and really less because rookies this year will have cap in 2022 and aren't counted) with only 25 players under contract. that team is going to shit and they can't do anything about it for years. their best bet is probably to trade watson take the big hit this year. gather draft picks and hope to draft well. they are going to want a lot for watson becuase trading him is the only way out of this hole
no team has realistically competed every year for a SB for a sustained time. it's why the NFL has parity. the only exception to that rule has been the pats becuase brady took a paycut and belichick is the best coach in the league.
With regards to the three options, 1. You seem to be forgetting about all the cap space we have, and that JD can trade down from #23 or trade down from next year's 1st and garner additional picks. Even if we trade #2, we'd still have 4 picks in the top 100 players. That's nothing to sneeze at and is certainly above average. 2. Is indeed a viable option. 3. IMO this is a delusional option. I think the whole idea of building the team first and then hoping in a year or two that we can trade a bundle of draft picks to move up to take "a" QB is nuts. It could cost more than Watson and the likelihood is that QB wouldn't be anywhere near as good as Watson I also think the idea of building around Sam is nuts. The only way this option is valid is if, JD trades down from #2 only a few spots and then JD takes Wilson or Lance.
I think that was only me saying just build and don't worry about QB this year. Maybe a few others, but it feels like I'm the only one. However, there was a time they did want Fields and even suggested he might be as good as Lawrence. Then he looked average against the #1 team and got thrown into the TGG dumpster. In reality, if we do go QB at #2 it should be Fields.
I wonder if trading for the #2 and then just flipping that again to get 5-6 or maybe even 7 total 1s within 2 years is the move. BOB did that team no favors man.
You answer the condumdrum you posed within one paragraph, So why insult people's intelligence? I don't want Fields and even though last week I would have been happy to trade down and grab more picks a potential FQB wasn't potentially available via trade, not everything is about a shiny new toy. Watson is a top 5 QB something we haven't had for ever.
Because their fanbase has followed a team that always builds their team correctly. The steelers have a smart FO and their fans have learned from them.
We agree here. The Texans are completely fucked and have no chance of building a winner around Watson in the near future. They have been completely mismanaged.
that might be their best option. Caserio has his work cut out for him. he's in a hole that's deep. I wouldn't want to be in his shoes at all. that may be his best bet. try and trade watson for sam and both our 1sts. then trade down from 2 a few spots to get another 1st in 2022 then try and trade down again for more picks. As it stands now houston has no cap room this year (over the cap) or next year (over the cap realistically unless they move watson this year) he's gonna have to cut watt and cooks for sure.
He is a bigger boom or bust than Sam and we just burned all of our fingers and toes and 2nd rounders on that roll of the dice.
yeah...I was just summarizing the options open to JD...not really trying to make a case for one over another....I get we do have cap room under option 1, but I think it’s next year where Watsons contract would balloon and eat up a bunch of that cap, right? And under the proposed scenarios, we’d be without a first rounder for 2023, right when we’d really need it to help offset a large QB salary. I don’t know...I think JD has his work cut out for him. I like Watson a lot, but I don’t think it’s the no brainer that a lot of people seem to think it is if the cost is really three first rounders and then some. Again, if he’s THAT good, why is Houston still sucking? They are no more dysfunctional than we’ve been. Yes they also had bad coaching and even worse roster decisions, and Watson did get them into the playoffs once or twice, though I don’t think he won a playoff game, did he? Maybe he did...I can’t recall and not in the mood to look it up. I love the player, I think he’s one of the better QBs in the league, top 3, top 5, top 10, semantics to me. He’s really really good and I’d love to have him. But I don’t think I’d give up three first rounders (including 2 overall) plus more picks....I’d probably say keep the picks and the options more open and let our knowledgeable GM build his team. But I wouldn’t kill him for making the deal either. It will really come down to what the true cost is, and JD doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to get raped....if it were Mac, I’m guessing he’d already have offered the three picks and would agree to four also...but I don’t get that sense from JD. He has a 6 year deal, he just hired his first coach....I’m guessing he will explore, act if it’s reasonable, and if it’s not, he’ll go on with his bottoms up rebuild via the draft.
it's not an intelligence insult. it's human nature. it doesn't make you dumb to be excited about something you love and hopeful it works out.
I'm sure they also understand how valuable an elite (or at least a franchise) QB is, such as what Big Ben is/was - and what Watson is.
yup but in the same sense trading him away is still rough for them. even if they suck he puts people in seats (not literally because of covid but you get the drift) he's the face of the franchise and you just gave him the 2nd most money ever given to a player in the NFL less then a year ago. BoB did at least do something right with the structure so he isn't untradeable. had he given a huge signing bonus this would be a moot point right now.
