It is a broken promises issue, why turn it into something it isn't? Player signs contract with assurances of sitting in on HC talks, then doesn't get that chance, while also having his two preferances not even interviewed. Unless you meant an Oilers integrity issue?
A top 3-5 QB is priceless. He's worth at least 5 #1 picks and maybe more. And posters wonder why we can't have nice things. It's because when we've had the opportunity the team has passed it up like a bunch of dumb schmucks, and part of the fan base has cheered them on in their stupidity.
I upvoted your post because you said Oilers. Seriously though. Fans can say, "oh they made him a verbal agreement and went back on it". But trust me, GMs and coaches like Salah see it as signing a deal and then screwing the team over. Okay so the owner broke his word and Watson takes a 40 million dollar bite out of his team. That would make any GM step back.
I could see JD trading down from 2 for a boatload of picks and then trade Sam for a 2nd then take his chances on Trey Lance and building the team from the inside out.
Which was what I was hoping for (not exactly the Lance part but...) until the Watson potential arose.
Possibly, but they're in cap hell. Taking Sam (who needs a new contract in one year) would put them right back where they are now, so that alone may drive them to a rookie.
How does that leave the Jets with a marginally talented team? They could sign Thuney, Robinson and another couple of players in FA. They could draft another OG, a RB, an Edge, a TE, a LB, and maybe a CB this year. Next year they could draft a top edge and very good CB. In no way would that be a marginally talented team.
Whoa! What do you mean? So no Watson, no Darnold, no Fields, no Wilson? That would be surprising. Who is available that you think could be a possibility?
We already have a better team than the Texans. We have draft picks and cap space. The Texans have neither.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/ufa/quarterback/ That link has a list of all the UFA's at QB going into this offseason.
I mean its just a guess based on how most teams rebuild now days. This draft will be entirely for building capital. I don't know what FA they would sign. If that is their plan they probably do have someone in mind though.
This is relevant-- Too many Jets fans think landing the right QB = instant dynasty. 2 Championships with 28 straight years' worth of FQB at a much better run franchise than ours is a pretty good indicator that the Jets wouldn't hoist the VLT even if we landed the best QB in the history of football.
Agreed. I don't think they trade down to take a QB either. 1) Watson 2) Fields/Wilson 3) Trade the pick and ride with Sam I don't think there is an option 4 of trading down and taking Lance/Trask/mac Jones
I just don't see that happening. If you are not going to draft a QB, then you give Darnold one more chance in 2021. If you do draft a QB like Wilson or Fields and don't want to throw him in immediately, then I could see them signing someone like CJ Beathard or Tyrod Taylor to start until the rookie is ready. I don't think they can go into 2021 with just a veteran FA QB and James Morgan.
I can see both sides of this argument If they don't pick up Watson, I would be shocked if they didn't draft Fields the Junior Varsity Watson
