If they trade Tua and draft picks for Watson they will cripple their cap and lose a ton of draft picks. Once I'm out of work I'm going to break it down and get specific numbers.

I used to be up on all of this stuff but I've fallen off in my old age of 35... what's the dead cap situation for the Texans if they trade Watson? Because just looking at his contract briefly, they'd incur a MASSIVE cap hit just because of the bonuses paid out already and the structure of the contract. When you look at that part of the equation, it feels like there's no way they'd trade him.
If he demands a trade they have little choice. You cant keep a guy who wants out. Its bad for the locker room
I feel like I am completely on island in saying I don’t want Watson. The Jets finally have an opportunity to rebuild the right way. Throwing it all away on one player is bad business.
They're not throwing it all away. They'd go from an excess in draft picks to a normal amount of draft picks and they'd have a top 5 QB.
Rebuilding the right way means to win after rebuilding right? There is quite simply no easier way for the Jets to win than by bringing in a top 5 QB just entering his prime years. There is no one way to rebuild and you collect the picks the Jets have for flexibility when a once in a lifetime opportunity comes up and a top 5 QB becomes available you are ready to pounce and seen as the favorites.
With the second overall pick the Texans can get a shiny new QB to replace Watson. We give them that pick and Sam Darnold as a mentor for the new QB and not a penny more. I even think that we are being too generous with that offer.
I'm sure I am the minority on this topic, but... I don't want to give up a shit load of draft capital for, Watson. I just don't. I think we would struggle similarly to the way the Vikings have struggled since taking on Kirk Cousins and that massive contract. That was without giving up a shit ton of draft capital. I don't believe people are thinking about the ramifications of the team building aspect that would be hindered by this move. We don't have a good team. We are not one piece away from being a legitimate team either. I think I would pass. Unless It was less than what I've been reading. Yeah, I would pass. Personally. I would give them exactly what we got for Jamal Adams. Two Seattle first round picks. A 3rd. Sam Darnold. Anything more than that, I'm out.
@NYJFOREVER has it way more in depth than me, but they are roughly at around 20 million in cap next season which can go up to 30 pending cuts and w/e the cap actually settles at. Trading for Watson + including Tua in that deal would leave them with roughly 2 million leftover in cap. Watson would be 10.54 + Tua would jump to a 14 million cap hit for them vs keeping him at 6 million.
Agree that the Jets are dysfunctional, but reportedly Watson is upset that the Texans didn’t, as they promised, give him input on the HC and GM searches, and didn’t interview Robert Saleh like he asked. Given that the Jets did give input to Darnold on the decision to hire Gase (mistake though that was) and did hire Robert Saleh, I can see why Watson might consider the Jets a decent fit. I also don’t see how the Jets lack the picks to acquire Watson. We have four first round picks in the next two drafts, and a high second rounder. The draft capital is there.

You aren’t. JD won’t over pay. He’s perfectly happy with another year of Sam. We will suck next year with or without Watson. I think the rebuild is greatly enhanced with him. I would give up our 2 or the Seattle picks. They have no leverage. If they find another offer they like then so be it. That being said JD needs to offer something.
