3 1st round picks should turn into 3 elite players not 1. When you're a bad team like the Jets you almost need to have that happen to have any real chance of success.
If the Seahawks have taught the league anything it's that you do not need blue chip picks to transform your franchise. They built their team in the 2011 and 2012 draft with what will be less capital than what we will have even after a Watson trade. The key is to hit on the mid rounds.
Again if we spend that extra capital to acquire Watson we are the same team moving forward with Watson. The Texans just went 4-12 with Watson with a roster much better than the Jets currently have. It's not a good roster but it beats the Jets. Handing them a bunch of picks to acquire Watson makes no sense. The #2 pick? Sure. A bunch of picks? Hell no. The #2 pick itself could go for a high 1st this year plus a bunch of other picks. That's how premium pick trades have worked recently. So giving the Texans the #2 plus 2 other 1st round picks could easily turn into an effective 4 1sts plus additional picks deal in terms of what the Jets could get otherwise and for a team in the Jet's current position that is just out of bounds.
True, but if you consider Sam part of the problem in this bad roster, then the answer is not quite so straight forward, particularly if they don’t see a QB worth the risk at 2. If JD and Co see Sam as a key member of the roster moving forward, then by all means fill the rest of the holes, even trade down, and get more picks. The dilemma is that some people here don’t see any future in Sam and others see no real target in the draft for his replacement.
Sometimes there is no answer in the current draft for your biggest problem. The answer is not to make a whacky trade that loses value overall nor to reach for a player at the position that is the big problem. Both of those moves lead to bigger problems down the road. The answer is to match the value of the picks you have with other problems and fill those so that when you can finally resolve the biggest problem on the roster you don't wind up feeding him to the wolves and losing out on him as well.
In a deeper examination of the rosters at the conclusion of the season, how much better was that Texans roster? Look at the defensive rankings. They surrended 7 more sacks than us with more money invested in the offensive line. They rushed for 14 less yards per game than us and that's with Gore leading the Jets charge. The receiving corps is a wash. Our defense was much better. If we traded three first round picks we still have a lot of room to grow and cap space to add a bonafide top receiver to the squad.
I completely disagree. You don’t need a team of elite players. You need a team with a few elite players at key positions, some good players, and a good coach and a good GM. The Chiefs are a perfect example. QB, OL, Playmakers, pass rush for elite, and good playmakers. 12 Personnel Model: 1 QB 3 OL 3 Skill Playmakers 2 Pass Rush 3 Defensive Playmakers.
Right. As long as they don't view Tua as THE answer, the Jets can outbid the Dolphins based on #2 being a much more desirable pick than #3 in this year's draft. You get the choice of any non-Lawrence player in the draft, and there's certainty built into it with nobody being able to trade in front of you to steal who you want. This also means it's worth more in a trade (obviously), too.
Trading for Watson doesn’t mean NEXT year is going to be that great. Look at our schedule! However the year after that, with some more players and another two drafts, we will make it interesting. You can’t not trade for a guy that is a super star in this league. Look at was Aaron Rodgers does for green bay with two weapons and an OLine...

Let’s hope the Watson situation (traded or not) gets resolved sooner rather than later. We need to have a clear cut game plan headed into free agency
This is like 1000 times when Favre took a pit stop with the Jets. i think it will. They need to hire a HC, and no one will sign on if there is no clear plan at the QB position. (Looks like a Bienemy or Daboll situation)
I've been thinking the exact same thing. They'll NEED a new QB. So whoever they trade with, has to provide that option. Miami has Tua, we have the 2nd overall. That right there is all the Texans will be looking at. Do they like Tua? Do the really like Justin Fields a bit better? If they'd prefer Fields to Tua, they almost have to go with the Jets.
How is the scenario anything close to Favre? Favre had been threatening retirement for 2+ years and was entering his age 39 season when we dealt for him. Watson is entering his age 26 season and has at least a decade left of run time barring a horrific career ending injury.
Well it also depends how Miami feels about it. I can’t read their minds only say what I would do if I were them. They may prefer Tua plus draft picks over Watson.
I agree, I wasn’t clear, this is 1000 times more urgent than the Favre situation. It also can’t drag out with Houston needing to hire a HC and reset the team.
