Sorry, but I totally disagree. We'd all better hope that you're wrong about that. QB is the most important position, and imo you don't take an attitude that you'll worry about it later, go with someone mediocre and focus on building up the team. That' backwards. The QB is the most important piece and the hardest to get. Their focus should be totally on getting that QB now and building around him, not kicking the can down the road. If what FJF said about most people in the NFL still believing in Sam, then the Jets should be able to get good value for Sam in a trade. That would supply some extra picks with which to build, and if the trade down from #2 to #4 or #5, that will provide some additional picks. I can't imagine their NOT being high on Fields, Lance and maybe Wilson. If they aren't, I will worry about their judgment until they are proven correct. If Darnold has already started working on his fundamentals and is working hard, then think Darnold may be good enough to hold the fort, but don't think he will even be remotely good enough to think about extending/re-signing, and they'll wind up losing the ability to get anything for him in return. I think will Jets fans accept Darnold as the starter again may be a better question.
someone yesterday was saying he didnt expect anything for at least 2 years, said " 2 free years" wtf is THAT? be ok with sucking for 2 years while we "build up the team" around a QB who keeps company with Dilfer and Bortles?? ur wife who is getting sodmoized in the local pub bathroom by strangers for meth doesnt mean it, she actually really loveds and cares for you. Stockholm syndrome.
Well I slightly disagree. If...IF...Darnold fixes his fundamentals - and this means of course that this is a process not an event - he will get immediately better, and he will continue to improves as his fundamentals improve. And again, you, nor anyone else, knows what the root of Darold's struggles with his mechanics. I know you assume it's because he doesn't want to change and/or just hasn't put the work in, but we don't know that and I don't think it's fair to ding him for it if we don't know. I think the impact of playing in an offense that asked him to perform in a way he isn't really capable of, and playing behind a swiss cheese OL, is way underestimated by you and others here. Even if he was working his ass off at trying to adopt new mechanics, doing so when he's under huge pressure on almost every down, would be nearly impossible. You've mentioned your own experience in working with people and trying to get them to change things, so you know how really hard this is even under optimum conditions, which Darnold had the virtual opposite of optimum. He may be beyond repair after all that, but I don't think so. And while I'm not going to predict that he becomes an All Pro, I think there's a decent chance he can become very good - good enough to win a SB. Until I see him with a competent CS, better weapons, and a good OL I'm not going to declare him a failure.
I came across this guy, Zach Shomler, who posts very thoughtful reviews and was a College QB himself, worked in ESPN and Fox. It's pretty interesting to follow him on his Fields story. Here is his review of Lance last year, where he actually mentions that Lance is 1st round talent, and Fields not being great NFL prospect: Wasn't sold on stats, felt he needs to improve in many areas: After start of the year but before bad Indiana and Northwestern games, notices massive improvement from year before: After two bad games, still feels a future star in NFL, compares to guys like Herbert and Allen, says he needs good coaching (specifically notices Gase as someone who would ruin him): After Clemson maintains will be a star in NFL, and would not pass on the guy in the draft. Compares to Zach as a close one, feels the difference is that Fields is a better runner, so ranks slightly ahead: After Alabama game saw his podcast, where he basically said Fields had a good game, just that the team and the O line was overmatched, and this was a big improvement over Northwestern, where O line gave out and Fields sucked. Would have liked to see him be more elusive, but the guy was injured. Overall, this makes a TON of sense to me. I know it is long, but I think the journey is spot on. And with Gase out, LaFleur in, Fields might just be a perfect guy to come to the Jets and realize his incredibly high potential.
Chief. Click on the number of votes for each selection. A window will open. For Fields, click on the 50 vote(s)
I'd not bother. This guy is NOT very analytical... there are a myriad other dudes who do this better. Schofield for USA today. and JT Osullivan and actual NFL QB https://www.youtube.com/c/TheQBSchool/featured
All I said was it was possible. Anything is possible, so not sure how you disagree. He can definitely be an average QB in the league. He can work his way up to being above average too. He needs the coaching and the roster to succeed though.
Fitz worked his way up to becoming above average. It took him 10 yrs. And he is an OUTLIER. You ASSUME he can "definitely be average" in 3 yrs the closest has come to average is 28th, 12 spots below middle.
Prediction: None of the new Coaching staff will risk their careers on Sam Darnold....a 3 year Vet on his way..well as mentioned here ...the Way of his current comparison >>>Andy Dalton Mr. Backup Cowboy The new Braintrust will want a safer option or different options...what? We shall see
respectfully we spent more draft capital on any other player EVER.... for a guy that was sposed to transform the Jets he turns out to be the absolute worst at QB over 3 yrs and the response is let's DILFER/MCMAHON our way to the promised land? WTF!!???>
TDK none of us are saying it's impossible that Sam becomes average. We're saying that if you look at history, there is literally about a 95% chance that a QB who starts his career like Sam will never become a good QB. It's too slim a possibility to not bring in a rookie to compete with him.
I am fine with drafting another QB if need be but I do think people are overlooking how absolutely TERRIBLE Adam Gase was. Dinosaur offense where the QBs first read is seldom open. I watch many plays where there are long developing WR routes where no one has even begun their break. Can't wait to see Lafleur with anyone with a pulse.
I think discussing picking up the fifth year option for Darnold is a waste of pixels. There is no way he has established even the chance that he would be worth the $25-28 million that would cost and, as such, that line of thinking should be put to rest. He certainly can have his contract renegotiated or a new one written but there are no timeframe restrictions on that.I Why do you think the Jets would not draft a QB and keep Darnold at the same time? They'll have at least five in camp and keep three for the season so there's plenty of space available now.
