I believe Pennington is due a 2M roster bonus. I'm sure they wouldn't want to pay it, but it's hardly hefty. He cost an extra 6M on the cap this year, but I bet they don't mind ANY of this since they are getting into the playoffs. Why? FAs will want to come here, just like they want to go to NE.
I listened on radio with the TV on in the background. He made one key throw - the one to Cotchery. He also made a few other "key" throws - the one that almost got Leon killed, the two or three that almost got Coles killed, the dropped INT, the pass he threw away that was another dropped INT, etc.
I look at it as a Cutler, Plummer situation we can go into the playoffs every year with pennington but can we really get into the super bowl with him.Im not saying Clemens can but im certain chad cant,His arm is weak even if u did turn the volume down u never saw any any deep throws, the deepest one i saw was the one Mccareins which was about 40 yards. Even throughout the season all of our big plays were runs after the catch, i could remember the one with Baker against the browns but ofcourse that catch didnt count.
This is huge. What's even bigger than Pennignton proving he can win is the new coaching staff proving they can win. Winning is everything. Even the perception or anticipation of winning is huge. Look at Eli Manning's horse's-ass-of-a-father insisting he wind up with the Giants instead of SD because he thought Coughlin was going to be the man. If the Jets can even show up in the PO's and put up a decent fight in the first round, we'll have accomplished a lot toward respectability and the prospect of winning seasons to come.
Chad carrying the team and the Jets making the playoffs at 10-6 threw a monkey wrench into Mangini's plans. Who's Kelen Clemens? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
You dont need a great qb to win the superbowl. Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Big Ben, Doug Williams, Hostetler.
the 2-million roster bonus will be paid, no big deal on the cap, especially if CMartin retires officially after June 1st. If you read the article a few weeks back about Clemens' progression to #2 on the depth chart, it sounds like they want Clemens to have a full off season of learning and practice, and then compete for the starting job in 2007. If he doesn't win it, the odds are he'll get a chance...how long can Pennington go without getting hurt? Clemens (according to that article) is really picking up the learning process with this complex offense. If he can handle the smart part - he's got the arm that Chad lacks...Clemens can be the QB to take us to the next level. Pennington should always have a place as a backup/coach........
He soft-tossed the ball the whole game on Monday. He nearly got Leon Washington and Laveranues Coles decapitated, Coles on two different occasions. He threw 2 passes of 5 yards or less that Leon Washington then turned into 81 yards and 2 crucial gains. He nearly got intercepted with the game on the line, with a horrible drop by the a second rate CB bailing him out. He finished 14-29 on the day and the Jet's offense scored 13 points under his command (should have been 16) against a defense that is allowing 17 points a game. Balanced off against all of the above is one good throw to a wide open receiver over the middle and 2 scrambles up the gut when the Dolphin defense backed off and dared Chad to beat them with his arm. The Jets beat the Dolphins despite Chad Pennington, not because of him.
All i hope is that the jets dont tailor the whole offense to pennington otherwise we will have all possesion receivers and get "receiving" runningbacks.
Agreed. It would be downright stupid for us to discard Pennington. If... IF, Clemens demonstrates Chad's "intangibles," give him the job because of the arm and keep Penny (at just about any cost) as a backup/mentor/confidence-builder, etc. I can't imagine a better situation in the coming years. That being the case, we can devote our future draft picks to all the other areas we need to address to really take this team to the top.
This argument drives me crazy. Could the 00 Ravens have won a SB with current day Pennington at QB? Yes. Do the 06 Jets have a legitimate shot to win the SB with Pennington at QB? I say no, and that's what matters.
Clemens also better mobility which will allow us to do more roll outs and do more work outside the pocket.
Well, the argument is pretty simple to me: the Jets can spend the next 3 years building an all-pro team that Chad will then dominate with or they can go out and find the great QB who will make all his teammates better and dominate that way. While I wouldn't mind solution one, I really think number two is a much more realistic scenario.
Had they done so, I think unless Pennington won playoff game, he would be receiving the somewhat questionable send off, Jon Kitna-Bengals style.
I feel like if this team was to add one more 'major' receiver.. most notably a foil to the current staff, a Keyshawn/Plaxico big-man type via draft or FA, that Pennington is a good enough quarterback to win this team a Superbowl. Someone that could go up and get a pass from Pennington that is soft, but very well targeting to the height advantage of the receiver. It's very possible to have a respectable offense with a QB that isn't "dominant" - but good enough to disperse the ball among talented players. I think the Giants '06 opening day roster for example, Burress, Toomer, Sinorice Moss [healthy], Shockey, and the receiving prowess of Tiki Barber would have been more than talented enough to win a championship with Pennington at the helm.
I think next years draft is going to look the same regardless of the tactic they decide to go with. Unless they're so down on Clemens that they're ready to write him off without ever seeing him in any meaningful action. Having a top QB is certainly the quickest past to success in the NFL, but there are usually about 20 other teams trying to do the same thing as you are.
The situation is much more complicated than scenarios one and two. In the first place, it doesn't necessarily take 3 years to build a very good team anymore. Secondly, it's possible for Chad to improve if he (a) continues strength-training (b) becomes surrounded with an even better O-line and (c) gets a legitimate "feature" RB to take some of the pressure off of himself. Give him a feature back with Washington as an alternate behind an even better line than we have now and he might pull it off. Teams win SB, not necessarily (in fact rarely) QB's.
The Jets currently have two excellent ball protection receivers in Coles and Cotchery and another guy who is not a particularly good receiver but is good at defending an interception in McCareins. They throw 5 to 7 yard passes on average. That hasn't stopped Chad from throwing 16 interceptions and getting lucky on 4 other balls thrown right into a defender's arms. Adding another receiver to this team would not make Chad's arm any stronger and it's his arm strength that is causing his pickoff problems. Unless you see his arm getting stronger moving forward, and I don't, there's no point in adding stuff around him to try to make up the difference.
These are problems we should enjoy having, that's if you can really say it is a problem. If the kid sits for one more year, it is not a big deal. He just needs to be ready when called upon. I believe if we had handled our business against the browns we would probably be in the playoffs now and the kid could start the last game against the Raiders, but that is not our reality.
It would surprise many on this board (including me) if Chad could strengthen his arm in the off-season. But what if he could? Wouldn't that change many things? I'm not an orthopedic surgeon but isn't it possible for Chad to improve the one area that so prevents him from getting himself and the Jets to the next level? I'm not ready to discount Chad's intense desire to improve. I want to see this guy in TC next year after an off-season devoted to arm-strengthening.
