Sam is like his own, unique, situation. He showed promise in 2018. Got mono in 2019 yet played mostly well after he returned. Had the worst coach possible in Adam Gase. Was in a pandemic in 2020. Not your normal "bust". The potential is still there and many people see it. Like I said, it is just risky to try to see if he can succeed, since it is far from guaranteed.

It's hard to disagree tbh. Trading up for a QB who turns out to be league worst is about as bad as a bust can be.

    Sam was outplayed by Flacco.
Robbo had 1k season with Caro.
Worst qb in the nfl for 3 yrs.

Sam was outplayed by Flacco because he's been regressing for two years. That's my point. I'm not pretending like he's been good, I'm telling you why he's been bad. And if you think Robbie having a 1k season with an entirely different coaching staff and offense is solely because of the QB well.....

In normal job hiring decisions I tend to agree. That is, as the employer, I want the potential employee to be super excited about starting with me and I would definitely hesitate if I made an offer or got the feeling that the response would be thanks, but I’ll get back to you. I don’t like being someone’s second choice or fallback option.

but I do get that NFL HC jobs are not quite the normal job opportunity....where all the openings are public knowledge, all interviews are public, and it’s also common for coaches to interview at multiple teams.

so not a great sign if they say let me think about it, but maybe not the kiss of death that it otherwise may be

Yeah I agree. "Let me think about it," for one in 32 jobs in the world is a non-answer from me. No thanks at that point. Especially after a two day interview being shown the facility and what not. If the guy isn't ready to sign on the striped line, then I would rescind any offer.

He nearly got 1000 with McCown though. Look at who threw the ball in the games Darnold missed. Look at the routes he was asked to run, the targets he got, who covered him and who was on the other side. Numbers mean fuck all without context.

it's also a big deal. it's not a typical job. it's not the only position in the world that is head hunted and it's a long term commitment. You have to move your family. think of the schools for your kids, the areas you'd live in. the commute. maybe he needs to talk it over with his wife. maybe that means he misses out on the job. maybe we get screwed for waiting. people don't realize these people are people and not just robots who move around on a whim with no other thoughts

At this point I’m feverishly waiting for the HC selection and just as importantly the new coordinators selected on both side of the ball, with special emphasis on the OC. Everything else is secondary to me.
The discussion about if Sam is salvageable or not must be the top responsibility of JD and the new HC staff. We have endured two absolutely miserable years under Gase where no one on the offensive side of the ball short of may be the left tackle and slot receiver have excelled. Sure not Sam, or Bell, or the WRs, or the TE, or the game plan, you get my jest. Under Gase players that improved were the exception rather than the norm.
It was clear to me starting with game one against the Bills this team was not prepared nor equipped to compete. The D started to come into its own much later in the year, but the offense was a mess. The new HC has a hell of a tough job ahead of him, re establishing credibility, and setting an execution plan that maximizes the strengths of our players, currently on the roster or ear marked to be on this roster thru the draft and free agency. I fully expect to see a serious evaluation at QB that includes Morgan, a draft pick, Sam and or some vet we bring in to fortify our near term plan. But first, we need a HC that has what it takes to turn this mess around.

Sam cost us 3 2nd rnders as well and was supposed to be a transformative QB

1 pick, 1 year, or hamstring yourself 2 years? worst qb in NFL last 3 yrs.

Do you really think he didn't talk to his wife prior to getting on a private jet to fly to New York? Or consider all of the things you mentioned before doing so?

It's a big decision but it's not an offer that comes around often and it shouldn't be shocking to him if he's offered the contract after getting on that plane.

Honest question, Does this guy have an agent with him? Negotiations would have to be something that takes place over a considerable amount of time.

Do potential HC go into these job interviews with numbers in their heads?

It’s not like he is a proven HC, so maybe that’s why it’s taking so long, the contract negotiations.

Maybe that’s why it’s not a done deal, contract disagreement.
