    Except Darnold's playaction is horrendous.

No new head coach is tying themselves to Darnold. They're taking one of Fields or Wilson.

I don't like either at 2. I'm pretty firmly ok with trading down and grabbing a "2nd tier' QB like jones or lance or even delaying until 2022 for howell

Eagles requested permission to speak with him today so I wouldn't say we are his only option.

Robert Saleh has always seemed like a Head Coach every time I watched the 49ers. Always on the side line moving around and talking to players. Truly the opposite of Gase in almost every way. I think Jets fans could easily get behind this hire.

This is terrifying. Now we have to worry about him not only as a head coaching candidate, but OC candidate.

I'd be very surprised he comes back to the Jets in any capacity.

Christ almighty. I'm officially a Chiefs fan if it all goes down like this.

Sad to say we haven’t had a better OC since.

I would be thrilled with either Smith or Saleh. The hot shots currently Head coaching in the new NFL were all young coordinators with one characteristic, they had HC DNA blood in them. Damned the background. Ironically, SF and the Rams have great defenses, while Buffalo is now the most improved team in the league with a spectacular offense. So the coordinator background means nothing when you can see the big picture.
All this speculation about what Saleh or Smith would do and who we draft depending on the type of coach is just that, speculation. Give me the best leader.
Either JD and the new coach roll with Sam this year or they don’t, and that will determine most likely the draft precedence.
I’m of the opinion JD will grab a QB in the first round, but it might require some trade down.

Can someone convince me of Arthur Smith? I don’t get the hype. Isn’t it a basic PA offense that’s mainly successful due to the best pure runner in football, a great PA QB and an underrated WR duo? Is he doing anything schematically innovative?

2 years ago Kyle Shanahan had to run interference against people inside the 49'ers organization, the media, and the fan base who all wanted to run Saleh out of the organaziation.

I vaguely remember something like this but I'd be curious about details as well.

On top of the success of the Titans offense under his direction, he's been with the Titans for several HCs (I think 3?), so he obviously is highly regarded by them. He was also an OL in college, and has spent time coaching defense over the years, so he's well versed in all facets of the game. The fact that he rehabilitated Tannehill is also a big plus if they're going to keep Darnold.

I like that 6 years of defensive coaching experience. Him helping Tanny is just as helpful if they draft a QB as well

Sorry but Im confused as to what your expectations are? He is in the running presumably because he has demonstrated at least to JD the HC leadership qualities he is looking for not just displaying creative offenses or innovative schemes. He implemented schemes that actually worked well for the players he had and they won frequently with a lesser team.
He established a PA scheme that was best suited for the type QB and stud RB available, albeit a little conservative, and leveraged that to get the best out of the offense. If I remember correctly he damned near took that offense with a game manager at QB to the AFC final beating along the way much more “innovative” coached teams. So you give him little credit for ushering schemes that best leverage the talent he had? Give him a QB like Allen or Watson or Mahomes and the like that can improvise on broken plays and make an OC look like a star and let see how creative he is.
May be he should have forced fed more innovative schemes that did not fit the QB style at all, like Gase, the QB whisperer. We all know how well that worked.

Because the defense stunk !! :D

Then they had a bunch of #1 draft picks like Buckner and Bosa join the team and kick it into high gear and they took off. Suddenly, Saleh was a genius.
