I know and I hate that kind of offense. The rules favor passing now. Teams with elite FQBs have a huge advantage. The game is more exciting and fun for me with this type of offense. It's the type of offense that led me to becoming a Jets fan, i.e., when Namath was whipping the ball around to Maynard, Sauer Jr. and Lammons. Not coincidentally, it's also the period when the Jets had a lot of success when Kenny O'Brien was throwing the ball to Wesley Walker, Al Toon, Mickey Schuler, etc. If we go back to a ground and pound style of play and trying to win with D and ball control. I'm out and done with this team.
Thanks. Admittedly didn't watch too many of these guys because I was dumb enough to think the Jets wouldn't blow the top pick I'm 99% sure Idaho State (or its conference) pushed back their season to the spring and that the one game was basically used to give a showcase to Lance. Maybe I'm putting much stock in the way Ozzie handled QBs in the draft with the Ravens, but I keep picturing a scenario where they try to trade down from 2 then take Lance or Wilson either with the pick they got or by packaging 23 with other picks. I know everyone wants instant gratification, but with guys like Tyrod, Fitzpatrick, Brissett and Jameis all free agents, there are certainly plenty of "hold the fort" options that you have don't have to push the envelope with starting a rookie.
You know good well what a modern offense is. The rules favor passing and teams with elite QBs have the best chance to win. Think KC, GB, New Orleans. It sure isn't the Titans or Ravens or Rams (but that's primarily because Goff sucks). No, one doesn't have to be the greatest show on turf, but that's what I want. I HATE the ground and pound and conservative BS offenses. I want an effective run game, I just don't want it run-centered. I want the main focus to be passing, but enough runs mixed in to keep the D honest and to break off some big runs like Harris and Sermon have done this year. I want a RB who is a threat to take it to the house or break off a 40 yard run. I don't want 3 yards and a cloud of dust. If you want that, go back and watch games from the '50s and '60s and you'll see plenty of that.
I don’t want any part of Fields and this is not based solely on last night. Even with his performance vs Clemson still no. Watch him at any time he faces any sort of pressure. He doesn’t escape that well for his mobility (great runner when he wants to but actual pocket presence is questionable), his passes are completely off the mark. When he makes plays he is literally sitting behind a dominant OL which is usually the case for OSU and USC QBs and gets to go through every read.
Too many red flags. Shoulder issues, leader issues, arrogant rich kid, hasn’t played anyone, doesn’t play with anyone and most of all struggled huge against coastal Carolina who was the best team they faces FFS.
Yeah losing the #1 pick definitely hurt. Lance plays at North Dakota St., not Idaho St., but I think you're right, they pushed it off until the spring. I'd be surprised if he plays this spring, as he's probably getting ready for the draft. I think Ozzie's hand was forced regarding QBs. For one thing, the only time he drafted in the top 5 there wasn't a QB worth taking that high. Because he was so good at drafting, most of the time they were drafting too low to get an elite QB prospect without trading up a ton of picks, and I think Ozzie valued draft capital too much to do that, but he may have even tried to trade up high a time or two. He DID trade up for at least two of the QBs he drafted, and maybe all of them. I can't remember the research I did and don't have time to go look it up again. I think he definitely valued QBs, but QBs are valued much more now than most of the time when Ozzie was GM. I think he wanted a more balanced type of attack, which is fine. I could live with that. He saw that the NFL was moving more towards college-type offenses and running QBs and he traded up to get Jackson. Just because the Jets draft Fields at #2 or Wilson or Lance a little lower after trading down doesn't mean that he has to start this season. I definitely think he should sit for at least part, if not the whole season. I think Tyrod Taylor would be a good vet to bring in. If Brissett could be obtained cheaply, then I'd be happy with him. I don't want Winston at all, and would prefer not to have Fitzpatrick. I think the veteran QB needs to be very similar, if not identical, to the same type of play that the QB we draft so that the HC/OC can design/build the offense around his talents.
I'm all about the bookend tackles. So are the Saints, Ravens, Titans, Colts, Browns and Packers. Cowboys too even though their team imploded. However - if that's a move to make, what do you think about Slater (NW), Darrisaw (VT), Eichenberg (ND), Cosmo (TX), Leatherwood (AL), etc? Leatherwood's been a stud his whole career and Eichenberg seems like a perfect mauling run blocker. Can't comment a lot on the other ones.
That's cool. You know that I respect your opinion. I agree that RT has become more important in pass protection, but I still think it's way too high to draft an RT unless one has a southpaw QB, and one can have a great pair of bookend OTs without using two top 10 (or a #11 and a #2) draft pick on them. IMO that's a huge waste of draft capital, and is even moreso a huge waste when we don't have a QB and our offensive skill position players are such as they are. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, my friend.
Id rather have Pitts, reach on Chase or trade down but i wouldnt be furious at Sewell if all else fails guess is my point.
This! I'd "reach" on Pitts or Chase 10 times out of 10 before I'd stay put and take Sewell, but I'd rather trade down and take a QB, but if not, then take one of those two.
The more I see jones, the more I like him actually. he's very "drew brees-esque" he may become captain checkdown in the NFL and he's no flashy but brees made a HOF career of it and went 4 years without throwing a pass over 40 yards. Jones reminds me of pennington a lot. it's not a bad thing at all. he's efficient and safe with the ball. scans the field and makes good choices and doesn't turn it over.
Admittedly the game (and in particular QB's and 1st round salaries) have changed, but Baltimore did trade up for all three 1st round QBs they took (Boller, Flacco and Lamar). Also, for what it's worth, I know it's not pick No. 2, but the Flacco year, they started with pick No. 9, traded all the way down to 26 before trading back up to 18. Different time, but it does point to a creativity and willing to jockey up and down the draft board that other GMs haven't. Ideally the vet would be very similar in style, but I do like the fact that there are at least options out there. I really don't want a repeat of 2009 where, for as a good of a mentor as Brunell was, he wasn't a legitimate challenge to Sanchez.
Kurt.. I know you are more educated with OL than I am, I've been watching OL tape this week, and I'm not so sure that Sewell Is even the best tackle In this draft. You think he Is the best at the position? I'm watching Rashawn Slater. I don't know man, he looks really good to me. I don't get that same kind of feeling when watching Sewell film. Curious what you think? Not just those two either. You think Sewell Is the guy at the position this year? Hands down? I'm not so sure right now.
Lance is very hard to scout, given tier 3 level of competition. Wilson I would say is more of a sure thing, so I would have to rank him behind Zach at this time. Lance has some of the same athletic ability and size as Justin, but more raw and very unproven. I do think he is worth a shot in the first round, but not a top consideration at all. Zach to me warrants top 5 consideration. Lance is a big gamble, but someone will take a chance probably in the first round. Jones/Trask are end first/second type of guys just because of lower ceiling of athletic ability and mobility, but might make it in NFL, particularly Jones. As far as 1a and 1b, this is a really good point. There were rated like that coming out of the last year and really since HS days, because of great skill and athleticism that they possess. I do think Trevor moved onto the tier of his own, mainly because he just didn't have any bad games this year. Justin did, and I think while he improved going from option 1 to 2 to 3, he is still not on Trevor's level yet. Justin did have VERY tough schedule this year, constant game cancellations, and played with that injury last two games, but Trevor is clear #1 in the draft. Justin is clear #2 overall. In most other drafts I still feel Justin is #1. So I would rank like this: #1: Lawrence #2: Fields Top 5/10: Wilson Mid 1st round: Lance end 1st round/early 2nd: Jones/Trask
I havent had a chance to watch Slater & need to. But yeah Sewell has rare gifts..still alittle raw in pass pro but he has elite level get off, movement, lower flex & violent hands. His quickness on reach blocks & punch on 1st level are very high level. Just a baby physically, needs some technique work.He looks like hes 275 when hes really 325.But my goodness he & Becton would be something to behold. I also love Trey Smith, Alex Leatherwood,Creed Humphrey & my sleeper is Jake Curhan from Cal kicking inside to Guard. Not high on Wyatt Davis despite his hype
Do yourself a favor. Watch clips of Wilson & then immediately watch clips of Lance.Watch how they both move, watch how the ball leaves their hands & raw throwing ability. The difference is night & day. Wilson is more of the finished product w a rounded out game & i guess thats his appeal. But Lance is bigger, stronger, faster, smoother & has much better arm strength. Its ok to prefer Wilson..but saying their physical ability is even close isnt accurate or fair.
I thought Sewell was worthy of being a high pick, just not that high I guess. He looks very raw to me, even In run comp's, he looks lost at times, his balance Isn't ideal a lot from what I'm seeing, and he doesn't "dominate". At least not In the same types of ways I consistently see Becton do. He's definitely an athlete with a very high ceiling, but, a see a lot of things I don't like too. I'll keep watching more though. Let me know what you think, Slater. If you get time, PM me, tag me In a post, If you have time of course. I'm curious on your thoughts of the kid. I love Leatherwood as well. I'm not sold on Humphrey personally. The rest I haven't watched. I agree with Wyatt Davis. He had a down year this year overall. Last year's tape was much better. Much better. It sucks he got hurt too. I think he has a lot of potential but I'm not sold on him In the first at all. Thanks for the reply!
Listening to Daniel Jeremiah talk on the Rich Eisen Show, he feels Zach Wilson is better than Justin Fields and should be the Jets pick at #2 overall. I really need to look more into Wilson because I have liked what I have seen from Fields, yet many are saying Wilson is the real deal and better.
I've been big on Wilson, and actually I think his intangible quality of "innate sense of the game" is much better than Fields, very much like Mahomes IMO. BUT...he's smaller, has had two shoulder injuries, and hasn't played near the level of competition that Fields has. I would have to defer to those who are better at analyzing QBs than I am, and of course defer to Douglas's knowledge and experience.
w/o being overly insulting...how tf do you wanna run back the WORST starting QB in the NFL over the last 3 yrs in hopes that he ahcieves Andy Dalton levels of functionality? ugh! anyway. many ways to skin a cat. the cat , in this case, is a QB not names Sam Darnold. the SPECIFIC way they go about it, I dont care THAT much. Preference is trade down and get Wilson/Fields/Jones if at all possible. Gaining a pick or 2. I'd be happy to plug in Stafford for a few years as well.
