I think Trevor Lawrence earned the benefit of the doubt because the year before as a freshman he led Clemson to a beat down of Alabama and threw for 350 yards and 3 TDs against a team that sent 14 players to the NFL.
Smith is the real deal, but I don't know that using the #2 pick on him is the best move. That said, I believe he will go top 5, and also that Miami is a prime competitor for him so if they want him they're going to have to take him at #2. If Douglas is planning on sticking with Sam, getting him a weapon like Smith is a necessity. Look what Diggs did for Allen. I know there are other good receivers in this class, but what I've seen from Smith is very impressive - he's not the fastest, but he is fast, but his route running and razor sharp cuts enable him to get separation every time, something Darnold with his less than pinpoint accuracy needs. I'd love to see the Jets be able to get Smith and Harris, or maybe Sermon - these guys would transform Darnold.
It’s looking more and more like the 2nd pick is wide open. A trade is definitely in the cards for the Jets, but My thinking is this, if we don’t see a QB at 2 wordy of the pick, why would another team trade up for the same QB? A bigger question to me is this one. Who would JD value as a second pick if he can’t find a reasonable trade package, for a team with so many needs?
one blue chip position player would do wonders for this team; safety simply wasn’t the position to do so for the team Jamal was brought into and probably isn’t now. An elite WR certainly would be.
Unfortunately I don't think any team is trading up to #2. Outside of TLaw, there are zero can't miss franchise-level QB prospects. Fields/Wilson can become great pros but trading up for them is too risky. We're probably taking Sewell at #2.
I think we already had one " too little" guy....name was Chrebet or something like that. Was pretty good as I recall. There is also this Welker guy.......
Fair enough and good point. I only count five on defense. When all is said and done that Clemson team will end up with a similar number of NFL players as well. It's a bit understated and I'm not sure how much it would've mattered but Ohio State was missing 13 players, including their starting left tackle, and two defensive lineman. They also watched Sermon drop on the first play (not a huge drop off to the Master though different running style) and lost Wyatt Davis in the third. He didn't play good but I would hardly say it was a bad game against an avalanche of scoring that forces offenses to press.
Also Fields had at least 1 TD disallowed by bad call/penalty. He really didn't have a bad game. It wasn't a great game but not bad at all considering the injury. I still think Fields should be the pick at #2. I'm cool with trading down and snagging a QB later in the first round too. Any plan not involving a QB in the first round is a nonstarter for me though.
why do people assume Sewell will play RT? Becton as RT in many ways makes a ton of sense. Instant run game
You’re simplifying too little to just include height but not weight. Chrebet was 14 lbs heavier, Welker 10. That’s a significant amount of muscle and strength they had over Smith currently.
Why do people still say, "If there is a QB we like at 2"? They've all played their last game. You either like one or you don't. Our problem is we are 2-14 and have too many holes to fill to take a QB we might like at #2.
We have drafted Becton in the last 10 years or so, maybe even since we got Mangold and Brick in 2006, 14 years ago, the OL has rotted away ever since
Smith was lights out yesterday, I think he is a offensive play maker...what do the Jets need? An offensive playmaker. He isn't just a WR, he does so many things. I feel like he would make any QB's life easier
Why would Becton willingly move to RT and take less money when he's already proven he can be a good LT?
Smith built like Robbie Anderson, that’s the only thing concerns me. But he looks elite! We need to focus on offensive skill players this year!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If Lawrence there at 2 take him, but otherwise maybe trade down few picks, take a WR with the 1st pick. Take RB with second. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The bold is utter nonsense. Darnold has a lot more wrong with him than just not having a great WR. Adding Smith is not going to fix Darnolds poor footwork, bad mechanics, poor decision making (throwing into double and triple coverage), his ability to read defenses, or his accuracy. If anything, Darnold would wind up getting Smith seriously injured and just making Jets fans more frustrated because we were still getting bad QB play. Wake up! I'd like to see how you'd do vs Alabama with broken ribs and not being able to practice prior to the game. He's not perfect, but no QB is, even Lawrence, or Brady, or Brees, or Rodgers, insert the name of any QB. He has talent, a great arm, athleticism, mobility, leadership, guts, and determination. The coaching he has received at OSU is probably little better (if any) than what Darnold has received, and Fields is a MUCH better prospect than Darnold ever was. Fields doesn't have awful mechanics and doesn't have a history of turning the ball over like Darnold did. He's a better runner than Darnold can dream about being, and his football IQ is light years better than Darnold.
I totally disagree. Your opinion completely ignores the lack of good QBs in the NFL and ignores the talent and potential of these three QBs. Fields needs to work on making his progression, but then most QBs entering the NFL do as well. Lawrence will, that's for certain. He's not the slam dunk great QB that many think he is. I saw some real hesitancy and warts in his play during the end of the season and playoffs. If Wilson can stay healthy and curtail his instincts to be less aggressive, I think he can be a quality starter in the NFL, maybe even a very good one. I think that Lance has potential as well. He has prototypical size, is mobile, has a very strong arm, doesn't turn the ball over. He has to adjust to the level of competition, as does Wilson, and work on reading Ds, going through progressions, but he already does a number of things very well. I think all will be in the NFL for 10 years. If any of them isn't it will probably be Wilson because he re-injured his throwing shoulder a time or two.
I agree regarding Chase vs Smith. I totally disagree regarding Sewell being an option. I'm sure you're right that Pitts wouldn't be a popular option with this fanbase, but it would be with me. He will be a huge mismatch vs DBs. Look at what Kelce, Gronk and other great TEs have done. Put him with Crowder, Mims, and Robinson/Godwin and opposing secondaries wouldn't be able to cover them all. Add in a Kadarius Toney with our 2nd round pick (if he falls that far) and we could have one of the best passing attacks in the NFL if we only had a QB. If JD trades down and takes Wilson or Lance we could have a QB, but I'd feel a lot better if he just stayed put and took Fields. We'd lose out on Pitts, but I think he's (Fields) a better prospect than Wilson or Lance, and would have a greater impact on our team than Pitts plus Wilson or Lance. I could be wrong. Hopefully, JD will get it all right.
