If I remember correctly, the Jets wanted to pair Rhule with Gase but when Rhule told the Jets to shove it, they panicked and went with Gase.
He'd be an interesting choice. He's a good game day coach who sets his players up to succeed. His weakness is in recruiting. He can't break the blockade that Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State have on the 5 star prospects every year. In the NFL he doesn't have to recruit. I think if Douglas likes him and ownership has no issues he might be about as good as we will get short of Harbaugh. It's important he understands what competing in the tristate media market is all about. He's likely to take a few kicks and jabs early on and it's important that he can roll with those without getting all banged up mentally in the process.
True BUT if I'm a HC candidate I take the chargers job 10 times over before thinking about coming to NY (unless I have a great relationship with JD and think he's leading this franchise to the promise land)
I know nothing about him except he is/was the HC of Florida. Why would he be a solid choice? I'm not doubting you, just want info about him and respect your opinion.
The Jets desperately need a good game day coach who will have the team prepared week in and week out. A good leader and communicator.
Aaron Wilson is cited in the article; he seems to think Matt Campbell will wind up with the Jets so take it FWIW.
Chargers have Telesco who is a good talent evaluator and they have some talent and Herbert. Downside there is Chargers are a super cheap franchise, and the Jets are big spenders. I also think Telesco is a little too old school and doesn’t take positional value into account when drafting enough. RB in top 10, trade up for first round LB, and ignored OT. Anyway it’s a good situation but if you take into account picking any QB you want besides Lawrence at 2, the Jets job is desireable.
The most important thing about him is he gets good production out of QBs. Tebow, Dak, Alex Smith, and now Trask. Before Mullen, Feleipe Franks had a TD:INT ratio of 9:8. With Mullen he had a 24:6 year. Mullen guided Kyle Trask to a 4300 yard, 43TD and 8INT year. Leading the nation in yards and touchdowns. He’s pretty much has the QB whisperer resume that Gase falsified.
The Chargers are not really a prime NFL franchise and LA is a worse NFL town than NY. Yeah, they're a better opportunity than the Jets because of Herbert however a job in LA can go south just about as quickly as a job in NY.
I dont know much about Mullen so I wont shit on the idea but to me wanting to fill a stadium in Florida at the height of covid screams not a very smart guy
Campbell seems to be a target that fits the mould of what JD was describing. I could see him get the job
The thing about Mullen that is interesting is that he has actually run programs before and had staying power at them. All the coordinators are going to do is to give us a die roll on 'might be able to run a program' and the Jets need more than that.
I think it will come down to 3 guys Wink Martindale Matt Campbell Dan Mullen JD has a body of work with Wink and Campbell/Mullen fit the motivator CEO type. It will come down to who he feels has the best chance to succeed
