Yeah I have to agree.....I listened closely during the Sam portion and I got the feeling Douglas was talking Sam up to trade him, not keep him. But who knows for sure?
Mims caught 22 passes for what 350 yds and 0 tds. Looked slow. I do not think he had a catch in our last 2 games, Davis could be good or avg. Hall we will be happy he develops into a good starter Most every team in the NFL are looking at their rookie draft class projecting the same
Thanks, Tom. I respect your opinion as well. Yes, we just took a QB high in 2018, and we traded up to do it. The problem is that we didn't have to. We could have stayed put in 2017 and taken one of Mahomes or Watson at #6. You are the first person to articulate being gunshy about taking a QB that high again so soon. That I can understand, and is a valid reason to be hesitant about doing it again so soon, but not for refusing to do it. IMO in the end, the need at QB, the importance of QB, and the potential to get a true FQB is too great to pass up on. The thing is all of life is a risk. Getting out of bed in the morning is a risk. Since the NFL is a QB-driven league, one needs the best QB one can get. That means that usually one has to use a high draft pick, or picks if one has to trade up. That involves risk. I've said it before, but one will not achieve greatness by playing it safe/being cautious. One has to take some calculated risks along the way. I partially agree and partially disagree that Sam "deserves" another chance. He's seemingly a great kid, and the Jets have done him wrong, so in that regard, he may deserve another chance. On the other hand, he is not totally a victim. He has brought a sizable portion of his own misfortune on himself, so from that perspective, he doesn't deserve another chance. By now, he should know when not to take a sack and when he needs to throw the ball away. By now, he should know not to try to force the ball into double or triple coverage. He isn't learning from his mistakes. By now his footwork and mechanics should be rock solid. They aren't even close, and that's causing a lot of his issues with inaccuracy and interceptions. I've read conflicting reports on here about his being willing or not being willing to work on/change his footwork. Whichever the case, it certainly still should not be a problem going into his 4th year in the league. Why did he get mono and have to miss games when I don't think any other professional football player has had to miss games due to mono? What about Jets fans? Don't we deserve quality QB play, and not seeing the same dumb mistakes over and over ad nauseum? Don't his teammates deserve to win instead of lose due to his poor play? His issues are so bad, he needs to sit for a year and do little but focus on correcting those flaws. If the Jets bring him back, he won't be doing that, so he will only be marginally better, and that chance will be wasted. Let's say we do trade down and get those two 1st and two 2nd round picks or a little more. If we're drafting somewhere between #10 and #20 next year, it will cost us a lot more than that to trade up, and more than likely it would be for a less talented QB, otherwise, the team sitting there wouldn't trade down, or they'd be able to get more if he was a Fields-caliber prospect. Just because Miami rebuilt one way, doesn't mean that we have to emulate that. But even so, look at them. Tua isn't looking very good. Could that be because Miami's offense isn't built around what he can do well, but rather because it is a set system that any QB has to adapt to, or because the system was designed around Fitz? If Tua doesn't pan out, it's going to be harder for Miami to get a FQB prospect. They're either going to have to continue to roll with older vets like Fitz, draft a less-talented and lower-ranked QB and hope he can surprise them, or they will have to be willing to give up a bushel of picks to move up if some team is willing to trade down. Even though another team would be paying us in draft capital to move up and take Fields, it's still gifting them a great QB prospect that they normally wouldn't get. Normally, we'd take him and not look back. That's why I see it as a "gift." Anyway, thanks for the thoughtful exchange of ideas/opinions.
Keep in mind a goal of any GM during the FA period is to give themselves as much flexibility as possible going into the draft. No way Douglas wants to get boxed in to HAVING to draft a QB even if none of them grade higher than just average, especially with the 2nd overall selection. So ya, look for Douglas to bring in a vet (Tyrod's as good as any) and trade Sam -or- he may try and work out a 2 yr team friendly extension for Sam. But either way, Douglas WILL have at least SOME qb on the team b4 the draft hits. Then if the draft works out and Douglas gets a new QB where he feels comfortable drafting one, great! But having a QB under ink for the 2021 season will give Douglas tons of freedom to do what he wants with his 2 first round picks. But personally? I'd be shocked if Douglas uses his 2nd overall pick on a QB not named Trevor Lawrence.
Ingram is older yes but I would take him not at $16 million, and frankly in this weird cap season I don't think anyone will be throwing that kind of money at him. The reason I am interested in him is because I think he will be one of those guys who will not have a big market. In any other year he'd probably be priced out of my interest level. I would love to scoop him up, even along with Judon or Dupree, because he is a good locker room guy, and I believe he would be an excellent veteran for younger Edge players. I am interested in Judon, and I think he would have some really nice numbers if he gets to play next to Quinnen Williams. He might not be a superstar all by himself but I think he's exactly the type of reliable guy who would have a spike in production as a result of the Jets IDL. Okwara has been at true down lineman, and while it's true that some guys can do both, I am not interested in paying $10+ million annually for a guy who has to make a position change. Yes, I have no doubt Douglas would prefer to draft his Edge, but based on how I see the roster I would be fine with grabbing Judon or Dupree and also using their second 1st round pick on an Edge. I also would prefer not to ignore that position in the event that a tremendous prospect at a different position is available with that pick. QB and Pass Rusher are the most valuable positions in all of football, and I would take as many swings at both as I could.
@NCJetsfan Back to the WR talk: I was thinking about Berrios and Crowder earlier. I don't know if it is a good idea, but what about releasing Crowder? Then you take Crowder's money, with the money you were giving to Corey Davis, and sign a true #1 like Allen Robinson. Berrios has proven to be a solid WR in the slot. He can do a lot of what Crowder does. Then you'd have 1. Robinson 2. Mims 3. Berrios 4. Waddle/Rookie WR drafted who can eventually move up the depth chart. I like it, but besides injuries, Crowder is a really reliable WR, so I doubt Douglas will want to part with him.
I don't think giving up a "sure thing" so that you can save a little money and MAYBE duplicate his success is smart. This is one of the things the Jets did under Rex - they allowed some of the best weapons Sanchez had walk and didn't replace them trying to save money. Reminds of the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Personally, I wouldn't release any player unless I couldn't trade him and he had no value to my team. Crowder does have value and a lot of it. He has been our most reliable WR, so I'm not sure that I would even trade him, but certainly wouldn't just release him, even to sign Robinson or Godwin. Think about the message that would send to not only players on the team but other NFL players. "Don't sign with the Jets. They don't care how well you play. They have no loyalty. They'll use you and dump you." Things like that. Why would you release Crowder rather than trading him? I wouldn't trade Crowder unless I could get an equal value in return and could improve another position. That would have to be a very good starting caliber TE, OG or CB or maybe LB or at least a 2nd round pick. I don't think I'd get a 2nd in return for him however, and am not sure I'd even get a fair return. He may have more value to us than to other teams. I don't think Berrios has proven himself enough to be handed a starting WR spot, either. He's fast and has made some big plays for us, but he has also dropped some sure TDs, and I think cost us a win or two along the way. He also just fair catches punts. He's worse than the PR we had a few years ago who hardly ever attempted to return a punt. Why would you want to get rid of one of the few very good players we have? I understand that adding Robinson would be awesome, but losing Crowder would be at too great a cost. That would negate some of the value in adding Robinson. As MaximusD pointed out, we might be able to sign Robinson, Godwin or Golladay instead of Davis. That's because a $19m/year contract doesn't mean that his cap hit has to be $19m. I like that you were thinking creatively or "outside the box" however.
That makes total sense. If we can get Ingram at a significant discount, then I'd be all for it. Gore said that he thinks the Jets would benefit by having a veteran in every position group. He's probably right, but that's probably not going to happen. I do think it should at the edge position. I didn't realize that Okwara had been strictly a 4-3 DE, so unless we switch to a 4-3, he wouldn't be a good choice. Personally, I'd rather switch to the 4-3 as I've never liked the 3-4. If we stick with the a mixture of schemes, however, Ingram or Judon would obviously be a better fit. Again, however, I think it would need to be at a significant discount from $16m/season.
Yeah, agreed! I was just thinking about the financial side, and how to get a true #1 WR. Your slot WR clearly gets worse, but your #1 WR gets much better.
From reading the last few pages I got a couple of general comments. There is no reasonable scenario where we trade with Cinn. I don't know why this keeps coming up. Two weeks ago it was a possibility but with the final draft order its dead. Here are the 3 most likely scenarios at spot 2. 1. We draft Fields. Miami gets Sewell. 2. We draft Sewell. Miami trades Fields for a big haul. 3. We trade the pick to the team offering the best deal for Fields. Miami gets Sewell. The only potential for trading with Cinn is if they offer us more to move up for Sewell then other teams offer to move up for Fields. That is extremely unlikely, plus it means we leave Miami the Fields trade bonanza. That would be a disaster. Miami has zero incentive to trade with us (or anyone) and Cinn has nothing of value to trade with us. Bottom line, either Miami or the Jets are getting Sewell this draft. Cinn will probably end up taking a LB or WR or trade down.
NCJetsfan I am impressed by the detail laid out in your plan. On a side note, did you just change your avatar to Justin Fields recently? you used to have the Sam Darnold/Return of the Jedi avatar that HomeOftheJets also has, right???
Thanks! Yes, I just changed it yesterday or maybe the day before. I believe my avatar had Sam and JD in it together, but don't remember. LOL
