YES!! Make this trade!! None of these QB’s excite me. Add players and let them play/mature, that way when we get a real QB, he’ll have a better cast around him
Yes after he just played a game in which he was injured, in a lot of pain, yet only missed one play, came back in and played the rest of the game. You act the Clemson game didn't even happen. You evidently didn't watch it. If you had, I doubt that you'd have made such a wacky statement.
Not sure either, although Sam was a better prospect than both of these guys. Sam definitely regressed, and his contract status hurts the idea of putting him around competent skill players, line and most importantly a real coaching staff. I watch a lot of college football, and those who think Fields is a lock to be a great pro have clearly not watched him throughout his career. Haven't seen Wilson nearly as much.
For people who say that none of the QBs coming out excite them or arent any good or we should wait etc. I have news for you. Any QB coming out of college isn't going to be a perfect Super Bowl ready QB on draft day. It's really annoying seeing the takes of "Just trade down or draft a lineman because all these QBs in the draft not named Lawrence suck". I also keep seeing takes like "Don't draft one this year, use the draft capital to move up and draft one next year or another year." It makes absolutely NO sense. So trade down to get more picks this year sitting at 2 only to use those picks later to trade up next year? WTF is that? And let's just say for sh*ts and giggles that the flawless QB you are all hoping for does miraculously appear next year or the following year. You are either banking on the fact the the Jets will have the worst record in the league again (which means Sam was a disaster and will just prove that not picking a QB was fireable by Douglas) or that the team that is so bad to get the number one pick will just be idiotic enough to trade the pick so the NYJs can have the luxury of drafting this perfect specimen. This has been so overthought. If you believe in Douglas and his use of the picks and space we have this offseason, we aren't going to be sniffing the top of the draft unless Sam is again the worst QB in the league. And if thats the case, Douglas is gone. Wash, Rinse, Repeat. The ONLY choice is to pick one of the QBs. Trust that the GM picks the right one and get a coach in here that can coach him.
Exactly...the idea is to improve the team so we get like the 15th pick next year and then have to trade up and give away our whole draft for a QB that may or may not be for sale? We’re in position right now and need to take advantage of it
Well if Joe D and co are that dumb to do this yet again why are we even here debating...we’re screwed no matter what We NEED to upgrade multiple pieces of the offense via free agency and the draft for a rookie QB or for Sam if they go that route
OR weve seen plenty of college QB prospects some good some bad over the yrs & this ione isnt that great after the top guy. its a multi year rebuild. What exactly doesnt make sense about treating it as such? Reaching on a QB as the very first move in a panic makes more sense?? I will never agree w this line of thought.Because short term thinking & forcing picks as if there wont be a draft next yr is absolutely ridiculous. This is nothing more than fan impatience & flawed short term thinking.
Not to mention the only QB who looks like a legitimate player in next year's draft is out of QBU in Spender Rattler who I imagine will go first overall. Trading down with the idea to trade back up at a later time is dumb. But the idea manifests in the fact that people don't like Fields or even Wilson. We have plenty of capital to build the team up while also taking the quarterback. It's not like we're a team with no draft picks or cap room over the next couple years.
If the Jets sign a mid-tier IOL, a receiver and draft another skill position player with their first three picks and another offensive lineman - how are we not supporting him? We already have some young pieces on offense including a franchise left tackle. It's different than Sanchez or Darnold because there was literally no emphasis on building the skill position players. I expect this offense to be built pretty well by the start of training camp. Hope we sign a big time guard.
Just saying, history is at best mixed (and IMO not kind) when picking QB at slot 2 or picking the second QB in a class. It's easy enough to look up and I posted links in other threads there is a lot of disinformation and hype IMO we should be very skeptical of the QB panacea My biggest hope is JD is completely independent and objective on this which it sounds like he is since he said the evals are already 99% complete.
Who say's it's a panic move? There are a few highly rated QBs at the top of the draft for the GM and scouting dept to make a decision on. This is not like the year where we drafted Geno and was declared a poor QB draft class. We are sitting at 2 with MULTIPLE other picks in the next 2 drafts to use to help build this team, plus a ton of cap space. It's not like if we don't trade down we have nothing left to build the roster. If we had no cap space and limited picks to look forward to that yes, trade down and build. Unless we plan on picking in the top 3-5 in the next few years to wait on this perfect prospect, it makes absolutely no sense to trade out of the pick to only be hoping to trade back up in a later draft to draft a QB. It makes absolutely no sense
This is wholly contingent on JD liking Fields or Wilson. If he doesn't whole heartedly believe that they can be our FQB then why would he pick them? QBs shake loose from other teams all the time so drafting a QB isn't the only option next season if Sam or Morgan don't work out. I'm not saying trading down is the move but if they don't have full confidence in Fields or Wilson then it's certainly an option.
Id like to think,AGAIN, that its bigger than one position or player.Creating a warchest of assets provides resources to improve at ALL positions. So there are other options of course, but Does Fields compell me to move to door #2 w his tape? If im being honest not even close. Have no idea where we will picking over next few drafts.Cant predict the future. But we sure as hell know the ammunition is in place to have ultimate flexibility to build a top flight roster. Thats the great part about my argument. It provides a level of security to continue improving this roster regardless of draft spot or cap space. BUT If holllistic improvement on a roster wide level at ALL positions,by creating resources that provide Short AND long term operational flexibility isn’t your thing, i guess it wouldnt make much sense.
Well yes of course. If the GM doesn't like the players I think it's obvious you don't pick them at 2. That isn't what I am saying. There are posters saying that since THEY think all the QBs suck they should trade down because in THEIR opinion, they are not Trevor Lawrence and therefore suck. They are waiting for perfect prospects to draft and think that the perfect one suddenly becomes available in a future draft to trade up for. NOBODY is going to be perfect.. When JD and the new coach do their evaluations, if there is no QB worthy of the 2nd pick (which I don't agree with) then I guess you consider trading down. I think it's a horrible idea but...........Hire the right coach and staff and let them DEVELOP the QB. More QBs are ruined than are just bad QBs IMO. Get good coaching in, surround them with talent (which we have the assets to do) and develop them into what you need Then there is the idea of trading back and still drafting a QB. Unless you've identified a 2nd or 3rd round rated QB you want to draft, it's just WAY too risky. I've said in other threads if a QB is good enough to draft in the top 1/2 of the draft, then you don't get cute and try to move back and get them later. So what happens when you trade back and someone else jumps you? Then what?
Let's not be dramatic. Where did I say the I don't want long and short term flexibility to build the team? LOL. You're making this sound like an either/or. Either draft the QB at 2 and ignore every other part of the team OR trade down and build your perfect team. With the assets the Jets have now, we can absolutely do both. Get a good coaching staff that can 1) set the right culture and 2) develop players, mainly the QB. With your logic, than if we landed the #1 pick to pick Lawrence, we should have traded that pick also to build short and long term flexibility? If you say yes, then I respect that and we just have a different philosophy. We could EASILY do the following in the offseason. If I am wrong, please correct me. Resign a few current pending FAs that are part of the rebuild on today's roster Sign a True #1 WR in FA. (Godwin, Robinson as examples) Sign a starting caliber Guard in FA Tthuney as a Possibility) Sign a starting corner in FA Trade Sam for at worst a 3 and 5 but more realistically a 2 and later round pick. Draft a future FQB at 2 Draft an Interior LM, a WR, a RB and a TE in the first 3 rounds of THIS draft Use later picks in the draft to address other needs on defense With 2 Two Number 1 picks next year and cap space available, we can focus on drafting defensive players and rounding out a team. Getting the QB in as soon as possible with as much time on a rookie contract to gel with his offensive pieces, to me, is the way to go. And that process can absolutely start THIS YEAR.
