regarding original post, yes undoubtedly it helps no matter how you look at it. either can net more picks or at least give you a better glimpse of what he's capable of. SO absolutely helps i am a bit skeptical of the QB as savior meme (even for TL) and generally a fan of stockpiling but 2 #1s sounds skimpy if he's as good as people say. we gave a #6 and 3 second rounders including one which was already high second (others ended up that way). So it will get down to the specifics so much depends on JD and the new HC. Im generally not a fan of Feely but he made a good point yesterday regarding fitting into the system. the jets did sam little favors in terms of thing like pre-snap movement to make his reads easier. (So with respect to one of the earlier posts. yes coaching can make the QB read open receivers better if he gets a step up on what the defense is intending -- we just didn't help Sam much). Gase's system was not good for Sam and his level of (in)experience Who is the new coach and what is he expecting out of the QB position and how will the prospect translate to the NFL. Tough questions to answer FORTUNATELY THOUGH, we have the luxury of facing these questions, along with what to do with a lot of cap room and some decent draft capital. Things are headed up!!
Haskins and Fields did play in the same school, and Haskins did put good stats too and was a decent top 15 prospect. However, he is no where near the prospect Fields is. For starters, Dwayne had only one good season in College. He was not a 5 star one of the best ever recruits out of HS either, like Fields was. He struggled to make downfield throws. He did not have arm strength and talent of Fields nor athletic ability. He had no mobility whatsoever. Fields checks all of these boxes. Not to mention, even Fields' stats were better too on top of everything else. The point here is that Haskins was a good college QB, but he is probably closer comparison to Trask than to Fields. This is not to say that Haskins and Trask are not good prospects also, but Fields is just on the next level as a prospect, up there with Lawrence.
There is a lot to unpack here. While I understand your argument about college stats, that is essentially the same argument that can be said about every QB prospect, including Lawrence. It's more about the intangibles and how they perform against high level defenses. Fields has an incredible arm, is very accurate, moves well with his feet, has great ability with his feet, and is a big athlete. He has trouble with pocket awareness, he struggles to identify blitz packages, and has very limited experience in high level football. All of that weighs into evaluating a QB and deciding if he is a franchise guy. The only reason Fields is the #2 prospect is because he had a short year this year. He very well may be better than Lawrence if he had the entire year to shine. And if he's similar to Baker, then sign me up. As much as I dislike Baker, he just threw for 26 TD, 8 INT, a 95 rating, over 3500 yards, and took the Browns to the playoffs for the first time in 18 years. All in his 3rd year in the NFL. Either way, I think Fields is a better prospect than Baker.
My preference is to stay at #2 and take Fields (unless JD thinks Wilson would be better, but I highly doubt this is what Douglas will do. That said, what he does will be very much driven by who becomes HC. My gut feeling is that it will be Arthur Smith, and if that's right, I think they'll plan on resurrecting Darnold the way he did Tannehill, and I'd say there's a decent chance they can pull it off. So, if that is the direction they take, Douglas will either: 1. Stay at #2 and take Sewell, or more likely 2. Trade back a bit and use high picks for OL, WR, RB to help Darnold. This is NOT the approach I prefer, but it makes a lot of sense to me given Douglas's background, as well as Smith's if that's who becomes HC. I would also not be surprised if he took a QB as insurance, although I heard he was very high on Morgan - and using the 4th pick on him seems to support this - and maybe he'll bring him into the mix. There are a lot of possibilities this year, and I do have faith that Douglas is the best person to navigate them.
Alabama defense is not that good either, ND punished them on the ground with a two TE formation but could not capitalize on that running success because Alabama ability to score so quickly made ND become one dimensional and forced them to abandon the run game. The only way Alabama beats Ohio State is by making Ohio State one dimensional, they literally have to keep the box stacked all night and force Fields to beat them all night. Everyone keeps talking about Fields against Clemson but they gloss over the reason he did so well, Trey Sermon ran for 200 yards and allowed everything else on offense to work for Ohio State. If Sermon has another one of those games, Ohio State is going to beat the Tide easily.
There is the potential that Lawrence stays in school another year, not likely BUT if that happens Fields becomes the Jags pick and the Jets #2 pick looses a lot of luster. It's probably less than a 1% likelihood but being a Jets fan you just know that 1% will be come reality. That's the life of a Jets fan, expect the ridiculous and unexpected.
Love fields physical tools. His processing (presnap, pocket awareness, anticipation, etc) gives me agita.
While they're not similar players at all, this analysis isn't really true. Haskins has an absolute cannon and a bigger arm than Fields. He's a statue in the pocket though and has virtually no run ability. He navigated the pocket well enough in college though. That's not to say he's accurate enough to make NFL throws but he made his bones in college throwing the ball down field. In terms of arm strength (not incorporating accuracy) there isn't a throw Haskins can't make. I hope he rehabs his image and gets another chance. Selfish immature teammate but he's not some drug addict or wife beater or something. He made a couple dumb mistakes and played poorly to boot.
I wouldn't call 16 carries for 64 yards out of your running back 'punishing' them on the ground. Alabama's defense was discombobulated early in the year as most offenses with veteran college quarterbacks were much further along than college defenses. But their defense has a ton of talent including a top 15 NFL corner in the draft next year in Surtain III and as usual a stable of talent at linebacker lead by Dylan Moses. They also have an sophomore interior pass rusher (Christian Barmore) who is starting to come on. Their defense is good (not great). The run game for Ohio State has obviously been great but there's also an element of the pass that opened up the run as much as anything versus Clemson. It was a complete performance where each element complimented each other. When your quarterback is throwing the ball down field effectively as Fields did and checking it down when he needed to keep the chains moving, the defense softens up as Clemson's did.
Seriously, man. I'm sure Haskins showed some of his immaturity in the interview process that Fields would never show as well. Haskins was likely a second-fourth round draft pick that didn't really fly up the boards. He was over-drafted because Daniel Snyder fell in love with the idea of drafting a local kid to lead his team in his hometown. Haskins projected similarly to Cardale Jones in terms of the draft and NFL.
The media insists on the Jets trading down. Absolutely nauseating considering they just want us to pass on Fields so if and when he becomes a stud they can do the LOL JETS routine
What part of they had to abandon the run did you not understand? 15 rushes by the QB for 55 yards counts as well or does that only apply to Justin Fields? If the ND defense could have made some stops and kept game close they would have run for many more yards. Are you related to Justin Fields? Every time someone even remotely questions his ability or doesn’t have the same view point as you about him you run to his defense. It’s actually getting old. I watched the game and ND could not stop Alabama. Alabama was moving the ball quickly and efficiently so ND had to abandon the run otherwise they would have run a lot more for more yards. I stand by my point that Alabama’s only chance of winning is making Ohio State one dimensional, if they stop Trey Sermon,Fields will not win the game by himself.
Theres abslutely nothing that says we have to draft a QB at #2 & have to build around him right off the bat. There are countless examples of teams finding their QB at different points of a rebuild. If you truly like Fields/Wilson then you likely want the Jets to draft them. Not to mention we all know theyre just gonna draft defense anyway. They arent gonna draft any weapons. Thats not the team OR fan base’s MO. Im not talking myself into taking a QB i like but dont love. Im sorry. Talk about starting a brand new rebuild on a faulted premise. Not gonna do it. I strongly prefer trading down & doing this the right way. The QB will come as will every other position. This is bigger than one position..even the most important one.
I am not the 'Media' and I don't understand the view that the Jets need a new QB to be relevant again. Yes, we all agree QBs are the difference maker in football from average to great team but there are WAY more factors. I would say coaching and system is more important (more for inexperienced QB) and supporting cast. I don't think that if we switched 2019 Jets from Sam Darnold to Justin Fields they would have been a superpower. The overall talent on the team is awful, the offensive line is inconsistent, the running game is a laughing stock, the WRs/TE are terrible. I mean, just draft Fields or even Lawrence is clearly not going to fix the Jets overnight. I honestly don't see that much of a difference between top rated QBs. Fields vs Lawrence vs Wilson vs Lance. I know shocker but Mahomes did not change the Chiefs overnight either he also had very good supporting cast and coaching. Same with Josh Allen. I would rather improve the talent overall of the team to make the same Jets mistake of changing the QBs and hope everything else will sudenly change.
