well that may be true but i am sure the jets have already kicked the tires on him.

IMO, harbaugh is best equipped to turn this thing around the quickest. He could do very well with darnold.

we all know he's a dick and would want full power but it's very interesting.

the risk is that it's another rex with an early bang and then falls apart.

LOL. A good team could self-coach themselves to a SB long before your perfect choice of HC could coach a team of scrubs to a SB.

Bad News Bears doesn't happen in real life.

    Sorry!

I'd love to be a mind reader and know what Douglas truly feels about Darnold. If a coach and QB are so closely tied together, as the person doing the hiring (Douglas) you'd want to select a coach who shared your same sentiment on Darnold, no?

Douglas has soooo many options, I wonder if he'd ask each candidate to explain there opinion on what to do with Darnold/ 2nd overall pick and if that has any baring on who gets hired......

I have always favored a coach who runs the whole game not favoring one side of the ball going back to Weeb and Parcells. It looks like the Jets are moving in that direction.

I hope this isn't the case. I hope he hires the right guy and that together they make the decision on whether they prefer Darnold, one of the draft QBs or even a guy currently playing elsewhere at that point. Which QB they prefer shouldn't come into the equation, being the right hire is all that matters.

I think JD will definitely ask each of them about Darnold, and believe that it will definitely have an impact on who is hired unless JD is on the fence and would be happy going either way. That said, I just can't see him being on the fence or willing to risk his career on Darnold.

I can't help but think of Parcells quote about being the cook you'd want to have a say in the groceries. And what muddies the situation a bit more is Douglas didn't draft Darnold (we all know GM's give a longer leash to their picks).

I disagree. Just because JD asks them about Darnold in the interview doesn't mean that they wouldn't continue to discuss the situation once the HC was hired. It may have just been speculation, but I remember seeing within the past few days that Darnold's future is going to be a joint decision between JD and the new HC.

I know that JD has an open mind and is not only willing to listen contrary opinions but welcomes challenges so that they can be discussed and a consensus come to, but that doesn't mean that he's wishy-washy, or probably doesn't already have a pretty strong idea of what he thinks should happen with Darnold. The last thing we need would be for JD to hire a new HC and them not be in agreement on Darnold and that be a sore spot between the two that could cause friction.

If I were one of the HC candidates, I wouldn't accept the job unless I knew definitively what was going to happen with Darnold. I would want no part of him and would not be willing to base my career and success on having Darnold around.

I don't think anyone is basing their career on turning around Sam. At worst Sam gets one more year with a better coach to show improvement then he leaves as a FA in 2022 and we draft another QB or go with a veteran castoff. Although, the worst case scenario might be he shows just enough to come back in 2022 and we have to franchise or extend him. But that decision will be up to the vision of the new coach and JD and will likely evolve as they examine the QB prospects in this draft and the game film of Sam. I doubt any decision will be set in stone at this early date.

Joe Douglas decides on Sam. The new HC will be told what the decision is. But they will keep it to themselves until before the draft.

I disagree. Keeping Sam and not drafting Fields or one of the QBs this year would be a HUGE mistake imo and it would definitely have an impact on his career and how he is viewed.

It certainly looks that way, and chances are he will sign that extension this week. However if reports are correct and he is genuine and JD is interested, I really don't understand the argument of not considering him because he is an asshole. Look at Belichick, Parcells, Rex, heck his brother John. I don't think these are nice guys. Belichick is the biggest asshole there is. Yet he gets results. Harbaugh does as well.

He was a former player, QB, comes from football family, and did really well as a coach in every program he has been a part of. Got great results in San Diego, turned around Stanford, good job in Michigan, taking them to top 10 for the first time in 10 years. Went to NFL to losing 49ers team, and reached 3 Conference finals in 4 years. Reached SB in that span, and didn't have a losing season. Won coach of the year. Think about this. He accomplished more in 4 years in SF than the Jets coaches combined in the last 50 years. And this is without a marquee QB. Yeah he left after 4 years, but so what? Belichick also left the Jets rather soon, yet stayed with next team for 2 decades.

I think it's a huge coup to get this guy, but chances are quite low and he will likely just stay with Michigan.

This Parcells' take is absolutely spot on. New coach will need to have significant input into who the team is bringing in. JD will have final say of course, and I think coach needs to report to him, something Johnson said he will consider, but we can't have a "nice guy" coach who just coaches whoever JD brings and has no opinion. It needs to be a collaboration between two strong individuals, who will sometimes disagree. This is the only way to get the best results.

And I think the decision will be to move on. They handled it right. Johnson saying he loves Sam but it is not up to him. That was a signal to me that they are moving on. Time will tell.

I disagree with Parcells’ sentiment and the coach as personnel decision maker has very few examples of success. That’s the entire reason the GM has to hire the coach — so the coach knows exactly the GM’s player philosophy before accepting the job and can’t complain about it after the fact, and the GM knows the coach he hires agrees with his player philosophy. That doesn’t mean they don’t collaborate on player evaluations and rankings but the end decision resides with the GM.
