Excellent article! And he's now at the top of my list, even though he has not been a HC. And even though his hiring might well cinch the keeping of Darnold. I think Douglas and Smith would be a great team.
I can’t see Harbaugh being the guy Douglas hitches his wagon to. He’s notoriously a difficult guy to work with.
You would be surprised what kind of NFL connections you can make on the set of Worst Cooks in America.
This article also makes an interesting point: "...avoid a flashy Jim Harbaugh-type hire who will inevitably try to override Douglas and push for roster control." I don't know if I agree with that. Jim Harbaugh has done incredible things with 49ers, who actually sucked before he came over, and sucked for years after he left. Jim goes there for 4 years, no losing seasons, and gets to conference finals 3 of these, with 1 SB appearance. Jets got to 3 conference finals in last 50 years and none to SB. I just don't know how you say no if a guy like this knock on your door. Also a former player, comes from football family, highly respected College coach. Now, he is probably doing that to get a bit of negotiation leverage with Michigan, but if the guy is serious and is willing to work collaboratively with JD, it will be pretty hard to pass up.
Easily. He's an asshole who wears out his welcome quickly or leaves on his own. No way I want any part of that asshole.
I don't know much about his personality (aren't Belichick and Parcells assholes too), but would fans really be mad if he got here for 4 years, made finals 3 times and got to SB, and then leaves? And with a legit QB like hopefully Fields will be, maybe even wins it - he did all of this with 49ers without a top QB.
I doubt the Jets want to hire another asshole, who has problems getting along with others and might try to make a power play for control. I think the Jets will look for someone the opposite of Gase who can work and play well with others.
