I was just reading the comments by Jets brass and trying to combine reading between the lines/straining it through the bullshit filter. If I were the betting man my guess is that the Jets are currently leaning towards keeping Darnold but I totally agree that whatever happens on the coaching front will probably be a big factor. If they get some guy that is head over heels for Fields or if they hire somebody that believes in Darnold and believes they are just the ticket to bring out the best in him I think will be a big weight on one or the other side of the scale. If the new coach has no strong opinion one way or another (which would be fairly hard to believe) I'm betting the Jets will actively shop the pick and see what kind of offers are out there. Then ultimately get out the calculator and start crunching options. I think after the disappointing year IF Darnold gets retained the biggest thing that is going to save him is that he is a high quality human being. I think the Jets have been elated with Darnold off the field. Just need better results on game day.
Another poster said that he played against 3 of the top 5 collegiate defenses this year. The fact that the Buckeyes are undefeated should say something.
Agreed which is why I have been iffy on him. He played horrendous that game. He has been consistently good in his career though. Outside of that game, he has been very good. He had a rough outing against Indiana as well, but not as bad
He was off that game, for sure, but he did have a thumb injury. It could have played a part. I remember people were disappointed in his performance in the Indiana game too, but I didn't feel that way because I liked how he kept his composure and seemed calm despite making mistakes (3 interceptions). His calmness and competitive nature is something many QB's don't have. He is really athletic too, yet can also make all the throws. Not sure why some people don't like him at #2, especially after the Clemson game.
He also has already had one surgery on his throwing shoulder, and doesn't have that strong of an arm, and he has other issues that are of concern that Fields doesn't have.
We're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. This is not a matter of short term thinking vs. long term thinking. Getting the QB this year IS long term thinking. It's best for the Jets to build their new offense around their QB, not build some system and then either have to find a guy that fits it, or try to shove a square peg into a round hole. It's better for the HC, the team, the QB and the offense, if the Jets get their QB this year so they can all start getting on the same page. The longer they wait to get their QB, the longer it will be before they become a serious challenger. You know as well as I that the QB is the most important player/position, and that in today's NFL, if you don't have an elite QB, your chances of winning are not good.
it's baker all over again quoting stats with no context. here is a good article on that https://bleacherreport.com/articles...lege-statistics-have-in-nfl-draft-evaluations there is no good stat for a QB on college outside of throwing a lot of picks which is a negative one. put it this way. the previous QB before fields for OSU was haskins. He played 22 games had a 70% completion percentage, almost 5400 yards 54TDs to 9 INTs and a 174 Qb rating. he was considered the top QB in his class and selected in the mid 1st round as the giants opted for daniel jones instead. Fields has played 21 games for them. he has a 69.4% completion percentage, 5200 yards, 62TDs to 9 INTs and a 185Qb rating. very similar numbers from both. haskins has already fizzled out. now i'm not saying fields will but i'm pointing out that statwise haskins was just as good but in reality haskins hasn't cut it in the NFL
JoeD and the new HC have to be CONVINCED that Sam > Justin or Wilson. They're betting their jobs -- and maybe their entire NFL futures -- on it.
Fields has played 7 games this season. Five good games and two bad games. He is a marginally decent prospect who is on a stacked team and riding a huge wave of hype. Can we quit acting like he is the next Patrick Mahomes. "Oh how could we afford to pass him up!" This board is more susceptible to hype then Star Wars fans.
he's more mobile sure but as a passer their numbers are near identical. numbers don't tell the story for college
Exactly. Not to mention that Trubisky was the QB selected 2nd overall that year and Mahomes 10th overall. QB ranking is not an exact science. Darnold was also the consensus top QB prospect in his draft year. I am ALL IN to trade down and improve the supporting cast.
Be honest with yourself. Hypothetically say the Jets were at 4 and Cinn was at 2 - and they offered us a trade to move up and take Fields. What would you be willing to offer? Would you give up 3 seconds like we did with Sam? If your answer isn't multiple high round picks then Fields isn't worth the #2 pick and you are simply caught in a wave of hype. Be honest with yourself.
I again disagree. Same sentiment just opposite. Sam has incumbent bias or whatever the right term is. He's already on the high ground. Justin Fields (or Wilson) has to convince JD and the heretofore not yet hired head coach that he is enough of a good bet to be significantly better than Sam Darnold that the Jets toss Sam out and spend their #2 overall pick in the draft on him. That is not a 50/50 crapshoot an organization will just flippantly make just for the hell of it. Especially when they would be betting their jobs and maybe their entire NFL futures on it. Replacing Darnold with fields will "cost" the Jets probably multiple shots at excellent players if they could have traded their pick to somebody else.... which looks promising at this point. Picture 2 years down the road when Justin Fields is disappointing, the Jets just managed to win their 5th game of the year because the other team was resting their important starters for the playoffs and Sam Darnold is slinging it for the Pittsburg Steelers. Fucking disaster. Not saying any of that will happen (I really like Fields per se) but Douglas would be getting roasted on this board and Jet fans from as far away as North Carolina would be posting slobbering tear jerking posts about how they knew Sam was the guy all along and Douglas is a complete jackass.
I was really concerned about the Haskins thing but I've read that tOSU's system is quite a bit different than it was with Haskins at QB. Mainly that Fields has more freedom with where to go with the ball and the current system features a lot more NFL-style route combinations.
There are exceptions to every rule but in general the higher a QB is taken the more likely it is he'll be good. The collective intelligence of NFL GM's is pretty good in aggregate. Darnold was maybe considered the top QB in his class by the talking heads like Kiper but most of the advanced metrics pointed to Baker being the best prospect in that class. There was no consensus across the board on Darnold. If there had been he would've gone 1st overall. Name the last QB that was the consensus best in his class that didn't go 1st in his class.
To me its not a question of if he is worth it. We have too many holes to fill, have too many average players, and not enough great players. We need to build a quality team more then we need a quality QB. If the #2 pick becomes worth a bonanza we'd be fools to turn our back on that for any QB. Heck the Bills traded away the Mahomes pick, but look what they did with the haul. The dolphins cleaned house after Gase and traded every player that had any value for picks. Now they are stocked with a wealth of incredible young talent and still have 4 more top 40 picks this draft. Our division is rebuilding correctly and TGG thinks we can keep up with them with yet another touted QB prospect. If we don't trade the 2nd pick we will be left in the dust.
