We can land one of those QB's at 2 and build up the team. I agree that the roster needs a serious infusion of talent, but getting a FQB makes life so much easier.
I don't think anything is predicated on how Fields plays vs Alabama. If he has a great game, it will just solidify what teams pretty much are already thinking. I may be wrong, but I'd be surprised if any team has definitively decided on prospect's grades or whether they'll draft them or not. Fields has two years of very good play. That's not going to be erased by a bad game vs Alabama, especially after the way he played vs Clemson after the injury. Wilson is a VERY risky pick as I have pointed out in other posts. I still like him a lot, but not enough to pass on Fields or Lawrence. If JD decides to trade down and roll with Wilson or Lance, I'll hope for the best, but will be more doubtful about JD's intelligence/acumen, and a lot less hopeful for the Jets' future. I think there is a big drop off in talent, value and potential after Fields. Wilson and/or Lance could be good enough to get you into the playoffs every year with a very good team around them and good coaching, but I'm not sure they're good enough to get you to or win a SB. I think Lawrence and Fields give your team a chance to get to the SB and win every year. If that is correct, is it worth trading down for another pick or two, which may or may not pan out, and missing out on a better QB? IMO it's not even worth considering. You don't get cute, overthinking it, or try to outsmart others like Bradway, Idzik, and Mac did. You stay put and take the QB, and don't look back.
But Kurt, the Jets won't be picking as high as number 2 again. There are so few opportunities to be in this position. I mean its been 25 years since we've had pick this high. I think you have to take a QB when you find yourself in this spot.
I think you're picking a bad year to change direction dude. With who is there and the position we are in, and Sam looking more and more like Sanchez, I think its a fairly safe bet that we gotta go QB with the number 1.
As I said in the Clemson/Ohio State game thread, I will wait until the Alabama game. If he does the same against Alabama, I am sold
I could see 4 QBS going in the top 15. The Combines is going to shoot up Lance into the top 10. To me Tier 1 - Lawrence and Tier 2 - Fields, Lance, and Wilson. It may really depend on whom the new coaching staff will prefer to go with. We can stay pat at 2 and take Fields, or trade down a few slots and take Lance or Wilson.
Surrounding Darnold with superior talent is all of a sudden going to make him capable of reading a defense? He misses open guys all the time. Now he will have more open guys to miss. I'll puke if Darnold is behind center next year. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
I get this line of thinking. And perhaps if i felt stronger about the QBs not named TL id feel differently. But High level QB prospects are not the scarcity they once were. There will be others in future classes..most likely as soon as next yr. I see us being at #2 as an opportunity to really create a warchest & flexibility to not only infuse the talent level but also to have the ammo to target specific players moving fwd.
I just think this is getting too cute. We're in a position to get a QB (Fields) who would likely be the #1 overall pick in most of the drafts going back 10 years. It just so happens that a "once every 10 years" guy in Lawrence is available this year too. There are so many things that can go wrong if we just keep stockpiling picks and hope we're in a spot to get a QB again, and there's no guarantee that whoever that is will be as good a prospect as Fields.
We say these things every draft class. If you believe in Fields by all means, not telling you not to. Just thinks it bigger than one position group & player. And the odds highly favor their being plenty of good QB prospects in supply in future classes. That position has changed.
The Alabama game should have almost no bearing on your opinion of Fields. You're basically saying you're intending to fall victim to recency bias.
We've never been in the position we're in before. None of the QB's we've taken in the first round over the last 20 years were the best QB prospect in their class, and none of them were in a class with a generational guy like Lawrence. This year we have the ability to get a guy who would be QB1 in most drafts.
Before the Clemson game people were killing Fields and wanted Zach Wilson. Now after the Clemson game Fields is a consensus 1 QB of a draft that doesn't include Trevor Lawrence. I remember Sam ripping it up in the Rose Bowl against Penn State.
Fields needs a good outing vs Bama to solidify him at 2 whether we take him or we trade back. He’s had a lot of real good games and 2 real bad games. If he has 3 real bad games he’ll be considered a bust again just how he was when he played north western. If he plays like he did vs Clemson he can possibly contend for the 1st overall pick especially if Meyer goes to the Jags. If he has a good game and doesn’t make many mistakes he’ll lock up #2.
yup. peoepl put way too much stock in 1 game. that's how vince young went so high. and byron leftwhich. With that said I'm thinking I like howell more then fields or wilson but I don't think JD is gonna pass on a QB
I feel bad for Fields. Knowing this information, surely he's in for a career-wrecking game against 'Bama.
If youre comfortable w Fields being this franchise altering selection that has more value than a warchest of premium picks..i get it. I dont feel strongly enough to put all eggs in one basket on one player when franchise altering draft capital hangs in the balance that can restock a barren roster & provide ammunition to acquire a QB down the line.Perhaps a better QB prospect even.
