Pretty much man, even the big wins Fields is like I have work to do. That is what Kobe and Jordan and many great winners do...they act like they been there. I read he is a perfectionist, a quality I have at times and can be overwhelming cause you are never satisfied and want to be the very best
Well you need to sell Darnold as a asset. Can't treat him as junk, so if teams want him and I do think many do we need to get the right offer. The good kind of problem here is if Fields continues to dominate...you simply cannot pass on this type of player
As I knew would probably be the case, you're right. I've read 3/4 of his review of the 2020 QB class, and it's a very interesting read, and more than a little accurate. I will definitely look forward to reading his comments about the 2021 draft class. Thanks to you and to baalworship.
The video that Baalworship provided. ColoradoContrails listened to the video and provided the link to that guy's website. I really like what I read there. He seems like a trustworthy opinion on QBs.
Well one thing is for sure....this will be Joe Douglas defining moment as the GM of the Jets... who will he hire as HC?,does he keep Sam ? , trade down? Or draft Fields .... against bama will tell us a lot more about him...I am concerned about Fields health... how bad is he hurt?? Will he be able to practice leading up to the bama game? Will he be able to run? Which is a big part of his game..OSU has not said anything about his injury.... I expect him to play but he may not be 100% we have to factor that in when judging him in this performance...what if Fields doesn’t play well because of the injury? ... it will be a good test ... bama will blitz him to see how he moves .... Fields will have to make quick reads ....can’t wait for this game!!!
I'm FINE with Joe Douglas keeping Sam Darnold and building a team around him (finally). I'm FINE with Joe Douglas trading Sam, drafting a rookie QB, and building a team around him (finally) The key to ANY sustained success in the NFL is the 2nd half of my statements, building a team around them. It's far more important what a GM does AFTER a QB is selected than all the tea in China spent analyzing this QB vs that QB (what we're doing now). Trevor = Sam = Fields = Wilson on and on. It's what Joe does beyond drafting one of these QBs that will ultimately matter. Where would Josh Allen be without an A+ oline and Stefon Diggs (1,400 yards this season already)? Where would Patrick Mahomes be without Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Travis Kelce? Seriously, watch a few Chief games. Where would Joe Montana be without Jerry Rice? Tom Brady without Randy Moss (Brady's his only record setting season)? Too many times we brought in our savior QB, only to leave him to fend for himself. Sanchez came in with Rex Ryan and the leagues top defense, but literally no one to throw the damn ball to. Best thing Rex Ryan did for Nacho's early career was to give him red/green/yellow cards so Nacho would know when it's OK to throw another INT. Geno Smith? We brought in Ryan Fitzpatrick and we actually HAD 2 good WRs and almost won 11 games and went to the POs, which would have been Fitzmagics FIRST PO experience ever. And I was at that game in Buffalo and cried in my beer watching $17m/yr Darrelle Revis part duex playing 20 yards off Sammy Watkins all damn day. I watched with hi hopes while skinny walk on Robbie Anderson somehow became Sam's go to WR and rookie TE Herndon catching some brilliant balls. Enunwa became a young up and coming weapon with promise for Sam until he wasn't. Then Robbie got cut and Herndon forgot how to catch. Two years in we're back to square one. That's not team building. As 'hope' goes, our HOPE should be this: We finally have a GM that will build a good team around his new QB, whether it be Sam or anyone. THIS is where our hope for the future lies, not if Fields has better arm than Wilson or Wilson better than Sam. With team building our #1 concern, ask which scenario allows for the best team to be built: 1) Keep Sam and use our picks plus Seattle's picks plus windfall of picks our #2 overall would bring plus $80M of cap to build best team possible. -or- 2) Trade Sam and draft (fil in the blank QB) and use our picks plus Seattle's picks plus pick we'd get for Sam plus $100M cap space to resign players or new FAs. In Case1 we get Sam and the windfall of picks the #2 would bring plus $80m In Case 2 we get rookie QB (no windfall of picks other than what JD gets for Sam) plus the $20m/yr in cap we won't have to pay Sam. Option 1 gives us Sam with extra picks, Option 2 gives us rookie QB w/o the extra picks but with cap savings (Sam). If we're in a hurry, then go with Sam and take the extra picks from trading down. Sam won't be on his rookie deal but the players we get by trading down will be on theirs for the next 4 yrs. Either way, if Joe Douglas is determined to surround his QB either Sam or rookie with a quality oline and real weapons, then the future is bright.
Yes, unless you happen to get a TRUE generational QB, you have to build a team and system around his strengths. Even Brady had that with Belichick. And even with the true generational QBs they are better if you build a system around them too. And yet, what have the Jets done? NADA! ZIP! NOTHING! For all those who hate Darnold you really do not understand how important that is. And if you think the Jets can grab someone like Lawrence or Fields or Wilson, or whomever you think the "savior" will be, who will singlehandedly save the Jets, you're bound for more bitter disappointment in a year or two or three when you see that hasn't happened. IDK if Douglas is going to stick with Sam, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. But whomever he decides to go with as the QB I sure hope he builds a team around him, including making sure the CS he picks is capable of doing that.
IMO going with Sam isn't an option, and it certainly won't be quicker, because the QB play is the key, and unless or until he fixes his issues, he won't be much help, and will probably be a detriment. According to OTC.com, we will only have $72,754,956 in cap space.
If Sam is gone after this season the thing I’ll hate the most is him being tied to Gase and Mike Maccagnan in retrospect hiring him as the HC and Gm will go down as one of the worse decisions in franchise history !!! It wasn’t fair to Sam and it wasn’t fair to us as fans!! At this point I just hope Sam lands on this feet with a good Organization with a supporting cast ... I truly believe he could be successful in the right environment ... sadly his time in NY is probably over
3 extra #2 picks for mediocrity, they could have been 3 starters, terrible move , I said it back then the move was Josh Allen
While I am in the move on from Darnold and draft Fields/Wilson, at the end of the day the decision should be a joint decision between new coach and Douglas and nobody else. After almost a decade of failed arranged marriages, we don't need another one. The decision should not be made until a new coach is hired and that coach and Douglas weigh every single option and come up with a solution collectively. If that happens to be Darnold at the end of the day, I would not be happy but I would go along with the decision knowing the coach and GM made the decision together and not Douglas or anyone else making it without that coaches input. With that said, with a new coach and a existing GM that finally gets the shot to make the QB decision that will decide if he stays for the entire 6 years and beyond, I think we know where this is heading.
Darnold is done, new coach wants his own QB, reset the QB salary, Douglas didn't draft Darnold, 3 years of mediocrity, 3 blue chip QB's coming out, you can't afford to screw this opportunity up or it will set us back 10 more years
So, at this point - subject to change after the championship game - who do you like the best - Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Lance, Jones, Trask...?
Actually, the move was to take Mahomes the year before, and then the Jets would have had the #6 pick, two second rounders that year, and their second rounder the following year. That's 4 should be starters, and maybe one Pro Bowl player to build around Mahomes. Here are the names of some of the players the Jets could have taken with those picks: 2018 with pick #6 - Bradley Chubb, Quentin Nelson, Roquan Smith, Mike McGlinchey with Jets 2nd rounder (#37) - Braden Smith, James Daniels, Courtland Sutton with Seattle's 2nd rounder (#49) - Connor Williams, Anthony Miller, Kemoko Turay, MJ Stewart 2019 with our 2nd round pick (pick #34) - Rock Ya Sin, Jawaan Taylor, Deebo Samuel, Greg Little, Cody Ford, Dalton Risner We could have a great, exciting QB in Mahomes and an OL with Quentin Nelson or Mike McGlinchey, Braden Smith or James Daniels, Connor Williams, and one of Greg Little, Dalton Risner and Jawaan Taylor We could have had a D with an elite Edge in Chubb, Roquan Smith at ILB, and Rock Ya Sin at CB We could have had a receiving corps with Courtland Sutton, Anthony Miller and Deebo Samuel or We could have had a mixture
Great article! Thanks. I'm really starting to think that Fields has been shortchanged. I'm sad for him, but I think it's made him even more determined to be as great as he can be and prove the "experts" wrong. I really think I'd rather have Fields than Lawrence. I'm really looking forward to your comments regarding the QBs in the class of 2021.
