Once an Owner starts dictating who you should draft, the franchise is doomed. We have seen it time and again with many teams.
DeVonta Smith has to be near the top of that list. I like him better than Chase & Waddle. IMO, Smith is the best College receiver coming out in the last decade. He's clearly better than Jeudy & even Amari Cooper. If we trade down a few spots with a team that want's Fields, Smith would be an excellent choice.
No amount of draft capital is worth a legitimate potential FQB. The rub is: how do you identify one? May GMs have tried and failed. Still, if you can do it, it's the best way to sustained success. The main reason GMs regularly consider, and actually do, trade back for lots of picks when they could instead maybe take a FQB is they don't have enough belief in their ability to properly assess one. It's safer to accept a bounty of picks instead of "betting the farm" on one guy unless that guy is considered a consensus "can't miss" like Lawrence is this year. That said, some GMs just don't value the QB position as critical to their success or "blueprint". I suspect Douglas may be one of these GMs. I hope I'm wrong. While I do believe in his ability to assess talent, and that he does have a blueprint for success, I'm a firm believer that every great team has a great QB, and I want the Jets to be great again after waiting over 50 years.
I would put Smith in the next tier with the cornerbacks and Pitts. If we were drafting where we were last year those players would be nice but with the second overall pick I would stick to the players on my list even if we trade down. With that said I would be happy to move up a couple spots from 27 if Smith is there in the late teens or twenties.
Take the QB and build your roster around him with the remaining picks we have. What good is trading down if we're just going to have to move up to take a QB next year. We have 4 picks in the top 100 (maybe 5 if we dish Darnold and get lucky) + 72M in cap space with 44 players under contract for 2021. This team desperately needs a left guard, another receiver opposite Mims, a outside corner, and an edge rusher.
Using ONE pick on a QB isn't going all in... Trading multiple picks to move up in a draft is going all in. The Jets can easily target Thuney in FA, who wanted to be a Jet and was tagged at the last hour. That fixes the LG spot and will make McGovern a better player. WR can be targeted with the Seattle pick and we can address edge in FA this year. Let me ask, would you take Sewell at 2?
You are right, but don’t forget Josh Rosen, he was also traded up for and he didn’t work out. Wentz was traded up for and he had a couple of good season but Philadelphia is ready to move on from him and stick with Hurts. I’m not opposed to trading up at the bottom of the first round like the Ravens did to get to the 32nd pick, I’m opposed to giving up too much draft capital like the Jets did for Darnold and not having enough capital left over to build the rest of the team with.
The Jets could have kept their three second rounders, drafted Quenton Nelson and signed Tom Brady a year later instead of going all in on Sam.
No way Smith will fall that far. As You Know, I've been following the draft and players for multiple decades. Smith is one of the best all around college receivers I've ever seen. Only thing he lacks is top end speed, but he plays extremely fast. I predict he will be drafted between 4-8 range. Number 1 receiver off the board. The only negative, he's on the light side, needs to add a few lbs. IMO, a better prospect than Amari Cooper, and that says a lot.
I had a thread on the Week 17 Tankathon but I can't find it. I believe we want Atlanta, Dallas (?), Denver, SanFran, Carolina, Detroit, and Minny to all LOSE so they are not too far down for a possible trade down if we decide not to draft a QB at #2 (or a positional player, however unlikely). We also need Houston to win (their pick is Miami's) so they don't draft in the #3 slot. They could really screw things up by taking players other teams want. Of course, they also could cause a "leap frog" incentive too.
They didn't give up too much, it wasn't like the RGIII trade. The problem was they blew the 2017 draft....and the 2016 draft....and the 2015 draft....and the 2014 draft. That's why giving up the three 2nd-rounders hurt so much.
If.....IF......IF....JoeD and the new HC don't want a QB at #2, then moving down a few slots for Smith makes sense. Or maybe Chase from LSU. That's why we need to keep an eye on the draft order from #3 to #12 tomorrow. Gonna be lots of movement there.....potential trade-down partners can't fall too much: http://www.tankathon.com/nfl
