Fields has looked great against sub par competition but the 2 games against Indiana and Northwestern were hot garbage. I actually like the kid I just feel he reminds me of Darnold 2.0.. they are the same size, same slow throwing motion, first read not there they scramble run or get sacked. Against still competition he folded and not to mention all Ohio st QBs become busts. Watch those game tapes on YouTube and you’ll see what I’m saying. I hope I’m wrong and he’s tge next Russell Wilson but I’m not seeing it...
I've watched his entire career. He outplayed Lawrence in the first half of the CFP game they played last year and Lawrence outplayed him in the second half. One of his picks was on the final play when the receiver ran the wrong route. He's not in an NFL offense. Everything is deep and outside the numbers. But he has a big arm and fan make all the throws and is a fast, strong, effective runner when he needs to be. His question marks revolve around adapting to an NFL offense and taking what's given rather than looking for homerun balls. Hard to blame him though as that's what he's asked to do in that offense. He'd be a good fit to start in the NFL in a down field passing attack like Luck was in early in his career.
He has a big arm, ideal size, speed, hard to sack, will to win and is an absolute gamer. Love that side of his game! What troubles me is his Football IQ. If his first read isn’t there he takes waaaay to long with the football. He also gets confused with zone coverage and especially zone blitz. If he could start setting up protections and is groomed to step up in the pocket and work through progressions he has a chance to be really good. However, that’s easier said than done and almost uncoachable as a lot of that has to do with instincts and awareness from inside the pocket.
I just don't think he struggles with reading coverages. I think he looks for too many big plays and by the time he comes off the big play (if it's not there) he has rushers in his face and tries to shrug them. You're right though. He holds on to the ball for way too long if the shots aren't there. We'll see what happens though. He reads blitz pretty well IMO. He reminds me a lot of the 2017-2019 versions of Carson Wentz. He struggled with the same things and it's definitely a concern. It'll be interesting to see how he fairs today against Clemson's attacking defense. Should be a great barometer of where he's at as they change coverages a lot.
I think Sam's comparison is not really fair to Fields. Sam's Golden season, where people were saying tank for Sam was his sophomore year and amazingly enough Fields has done better this year, which is an off year where everyone shits on him , and smaller sample size of only 6 games, against tougher competition than Sam in his best year. Suck for Sam year included 3 to 1 TD to INT ratio, 8.4 y/a, 67% completion percentage, and some lost fumbles as well. 20 rushing yards per game, and 2 TDs in 13 games. Fields has also 3 to 1 TD to INT ratio, 9.3 y/a, 73% completion %, 45 rushing yards per game, and 5 TDs in 6 games. The point is, Fields now, and with small sample size, clearly outperformed Sam's best year against better competition. In the previous year the guy was absolute beast, while Sam's other (jr) year was even worse. Fields is still a better prospect than Sam was, which is not to say Sam wasn't a good prospect. I do agree Fields no longer looks like a can't miss prospect after these two games (i.e. he is no longer in the same conversation as Lawrence), but he is still a top 5 prospects in the draft. And Jets have a top 5 pick and do need a QB.
I posted that in a couple of threads in the draft forum. While it's exciting to think of all those additional high draft picks, it's not nearly enough value for the #2 pick in the draft. That trade shorts the Jets over 1,000 points on the draft chart, and it is old. If some team really wants Sewell or a QB at #2, then they should be willing to pay more.
That wouldn't begin to be enough to pry Lawrence from the Jags, and it's too much for us to give up with all the holes we have.
When did the #2 pick become Trevor Lawrence? Were not going to get multiple 1s, 2s, and 3s for the second pick. It will be incredibly difficult to get a single 1 after a swap unless the team is in the bottom half of the draft. If Fields plays well in the CFP we could get multiple 2s and 3s from a team picking around 12 (where the 49ers may end up). IF we could get the trade Nova suggested then....heck yes we do it.
"Sam Darnold is a good QB and the Jets should keep him going forward" What NFL expert would you need to hear those words from before you believe it and be OK with it? Namath already went all in on Trevor, so he's out. Anyone else?
Fields or Sewell could be candidates for someone to trade up A franchise LT who looks to be one of the best prospects ever at the position is extremely valuable. Teams would probably want to jump Cincy for him, and Cincy may need to go up to 2 themselves
What? That's a haul. The draft chart that was developed by Jimmy Johnson was made for Jimmy Johnson's purposes. Two ones, twos and threes is fantastic value.
Agreed. If things really go well we might be able to trade both picks. I mean who knows, maybe the hype grows like a wildfire and the #2 becomes more valuable. If Fields plays well today that would help. But as of now its highly unlikely we can get multiple 1s for the second pick. I'd be happy to be wrong though. On Monday we will know a lot more about how this draft will shake down.
Sorry, but I almost totally disagree. I do agree that JD and the new HC will make the decision together on Sam and the QBs in the draft. I also agree that there will be teams looking to trade up for a QB or for Sewell, and hope that JD will take advantage of that unless Lance and Wilson are both projected to go in the top 5. At this point I think Lance could definitely be worth the #2 pick, but I hope that JD will be able to trade down a little and still get Lance. 1) I think if he comes up with those conclusions then he will fail and be fired in 2-3 years. I would hope that he isn't so insecure that he feels the need to have to hire a "trusted ally." He should be more concerned with hiring the most qualifited, best possible HC for the Jets' situation. A guy who will be the CEO, but who knows how to handle young QBs, who will pick schemes that will adapt to the talent the Jets have at any point in time, rather than being a hard and fast system where one is trying to shove square pegs into round holes. He also need to take into consideration whom that HC may be able to bring with him to fill out his CS. 3) If they come to the conclusion that there is no QB outside of Lawrence that's worth drafting then they should fail and probably be fired. The more video I see on Lance, the more he looks like a quality NFL QB. Wilson has a chance too. The two things that concern me about Wilson are the previous surgeries on his shoulders and his thinner build. He's too aggressive for his build, so he will have to learn to curtail that aggressive style of play both in running the ball himself, and in terms of some of the throws that he has been able to complete at BYU, but probably won't be able to in the NFL. The question is can he learn those things. I think he can if what his coaches and teammates say is true and they're not just defending their teammate. That still leaves the issue of his build and the previous surgery on his throwing shoulder. Lance has a great arm, prototypical size, is mobile, and at least based on his present level of play, is able to read Ds and make good decisions as evidenced by his lack of interceptions. 4) I could be wrong, but I think if the plan is to bring Darnold back to start in 2021, then it will fail. I think Darnold needs to sit for a while. At a bare minimum, he needs to fix his mechanics/footwork. One cannot do that very easily, if at all, while one is preparing to play each week and playing. One cannot be thinking about mechanics when one is dropping back to throw in a game. That has to be automatic and programmed into muscle memory. That takes time and focused work. If he comes back and starts in 2021, then he will only be marginally better and the Jets will have no choice but to move on, and they will get nothing for him. I'd much rather they get what they can and trade him before the draft, and bring in another vet to start for a year or two. 5) Atlanta and probably even Carolina will be too far to still get Lance, and maybe Wilson. 6) If they trade Darnold, they will get an additional pick or picks. If they can trade down and still get Lance, they will get additional picks. If they love Lance and he's worth the #2 pick, then they don't really need the extra picks. They'd be nice to have, but the already have extra picks next year. Besides, JD will likely trading down at some point anyway and garner an additional pick or picks. 7) I think they need to sign a veteran QB whether they bring Darnold back or not. If Darnold is brought back, then he should definitely have to compete for the starting job with the vet. If the vet wins the job, then the Jets should showcase Darnold during preseason and then trade him before the trade deadline if they draft Lance or Wilson. IMO the plan should be to start the vet in 2021 unless Lance surprises and is ready to go day one. Then they can re-evaluate as the season progresses or in 2022.
It is and it isn't, if you think about it since we are giving up our 1 we are really only getting one 1, two 2s and two 3s. That's not that much when you are the 49ers that could just be a QB away from a super bowl contender and believe Wilson or Fields is that guy. Especially if you think all of those picks will be at the back of the rounds.
Here's another one I found. https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/should-49ers-make-trade-jets-move-2021-nfl-draft-qb This one seems like not enough, giving up the #2 overall and a 4th for a mid first this year, a second this year, probably a late first in 2022, late 3rd and Jalen Hurd WR.
Take our 4th off and I'd give it some consideration. The problem is there's no freakin way the 49ers would do it. As of now we are not getting a additional 1st for the second pick. The 49ers have way better and cheaper options then to trade up with us for all of that.
