Had a little time tonight to run a quick search of the coaching staffs for the super bowls Joe D won-- I wanted to highlight a few names to look out for this coaching cycle, please keep in mind that these names aren't who I like....as a matter of fact I'm not a fan of a lot of them. I will bold the ones I think will get interviews with us-- 2001 Ravens: DC-Marvin Lewis (this seems like a boring pick, but you could argue he would know how to manage things) DL Coach-Rex Ryan (haha) LB Coach-Del Rio (no thanks) Assistant- Mike Smith (former Atlanta coach, not a fan) WR Coach- Mike Nolan (Definitely not) 2013 Ravens: HC- John Harbaugh (maybe the connection would translate into his brother Jim?) OC- Jim Caldwell (another manager type, but again just seems stale) DC- Dean Pees (probably wont happen but maybe an assistant) LB Coach- Wink Martindale (this is my prediction--has a good track record) D Assistant- Steve Spagnuolo (wont happen, but again maybe a DC) 2017 Eagles: HC- Doug Pederson (no brainer if released) QB Coach- John DeFillipo (was a hot name, not so much now, maybe an OC) RB Coach- Duce Staley (watch this name) DC Coach- Jim Schwartz (dont think so)
I wouldn't want Martindale at all. The guy who repeatedly blitzes Patrick Mahomes and makes zero second half adjustments in that regard was a deal breaker from me. Caldwell would be a good sound hire off of that list. He deserves to be an NFL head coach. The question I'd have with Caldwell is how long does he want to coach? He's 64-65 already I believe.
I hope that none of those names are on the list of candidates to be interviewed. I would be disgusted by any of them. The only one that would make any sense to me is Wink Martindale, and he is already 57 years old. I don't want anyone that old (not that that's old, but it's older than I want our HC to be by about 10 years.)
I don't disagree with you--none of those names are exciting. I would say, even in the business world, people hire who they know or who they have connections with. It would seem like these names would have a lot of connectivity with JD and his philosophies on building a program. On the flip side, I could see him having connections with college coaches because of his scouting career. I find myself writing more on what I think will happen more so than what I want to happen with this team. I mean my fantasy if you're asking was get Trevor Lawrence and hire Matt Campbell, and have Campbell get Tony Elliot to coach offense and a veteran defensive coach. Ha felt good to type that out.
I liked and appreciated the work you did to come up with those names. I appreciate your thoughtful, intelligent posts, and enjoy our discussions. Douglas could go with someone he knows and has worked with before, as that happens frequently, but I hope that he will be smarter than taking that route. That's kind of the easy, cheap way to go, and not necessarily the best candidates. I hope that he will dig deep and find the best possible HC and one where they are of like minds, and then let the HC pick his CS. A lot of the time those friend/colleague hires don't work out. I understand and that's an interesting and valid approach. You could be right. I have no idea what he's thinking or who he may be interested in, but I'll be surprised and very disappointed if none of Smith, Daboll, Campbell, Roman, and Bieniemy are on his short list. I'll then start worrying a little.
I just don't think he's going to hire someone he knows and has a connection with. I think he goes outside the box and goes after a guy that he feels fits the mold and is a young up and coming coach who has a shit ton of potential. I would not be shocked if he pushed hard for guys like Matt Campbell, Lincoln Riley, Pat Fitzgerald. I can also see him going after Eric Bieniemy and Joe Brady. Both have NFL experience.
I have a feeling Pederson will be the new Jets HC 5 minutes after his exit presser in Philly. I just hope he doesn't bring that toolbag Schwartz with him.
Joe Brady has one year of NFL experience, this year. I believe that he has less than 5 years coaching experience in total. Brady should not be seriously considered for HC imo. Maybe in a couple of years, but he would be a true anomaly if he could go from one year as a college OC, to one year as a NFL OC, to an NFL HC and succeed. I'd have to see it happen to believe that it could.
My only problem with Saleh is that being a DC, he will almost certainly want to focus on fixing the D rather than getting a QB and building around him. Former DCs are also notorious for being very conservative on offense. That's why I don't want a former DC as HC no matter how young, or how good he may be. Offense needs to be the focus of the Jets. The NFL is an offensive league. The Chiefs win with offense, not defense. The same goes for the Packers and most teams. The Jets have focused on the D for most of the last 20 years, and the offense has been largely ignored with prime picks. Hiring a former DC and the Jets' focus continuing to be on the D rather than offense will be enough to make me stop following this team as much as Gase being back as HC would have.
I think that's an over-generalization due to the hires the Jets have made. Three of the top 6 ranked offenses (Bills, Titans, Vikings) all have defensive guys as head coaches. Seven of the top 8 defenses have offensive guys as head coaches. A good coach focuses on the whole team. A bad one, only focuses on one side like Gase did.
My two cents about the HC selection. I'm not hard over on only focusing on a HC with an Offensive background or ex QB guru. That would be a plus, but too restrictive a search. Above all I want a guy that can manage the whole team from womb to tomb for 60 minutes. Someone that gets all 52 ready to play on any giving Sunday, and smart enough to adjust his play calling on the fly. I want someone that is respected by his players, attracts top notch assistant coaches and innovative in his strategy on both sides of the ball. I have been quite impressed with both Tennessee and Miami coaches for that matter, as well as by some of the young offensive coaching stallions in GB, SF, Baltimore, KC and others. I want a guy with a strong personality that understands the big picture and manages all key coaching aspects of a winning franchise. In short I don't ever want another Adam Gase again.
Most times when you see a guy that's come up in the League with multiple organizations, they build a network of connections and get to know a lot of smart football people. Those guys, when they get their shot, will usually try to surround themselves with as many of the smartest football people that they've worked with over their tenure (the ones that are available at least) because he knows what they can bring to his operation. What you're saying is that he's going to avoid that route and pick from a bunch of people he doesn't know. At least your posting has stayed consistent.
Yes, it's a generalization, but I don't trust DCs. I want to insure that we will build our offense. Hopefully, Douglas will do that. I agree that a good coach focuses on the whole team. The problem is that we've had too many bad coaches, and I'm paranoid. LOL Of the three teams you mentioned, the only one whose offense I really like is the Bills. I think the Titans' offense is outdated. It's working for them, but I don't like it. The Vikings at least have a great RB, and great WRs, but their QB sucks.
LA, send this post to JD, Woody and CJ. Spot on and while I do not trust the JJ bros, I do trust JD. He is smart and has a plan which he is sticking too no matter what the "noise" is by the fans, media, etc. I am older then a lot of you guys and seen enough to make my eyes bleed, but I am looking forward to this offseason... JD has already turn the rudder enough on the USS JET Ship, to avoid the AG iceBerg.
