The question is which of the QBs other than TL is actually worth taking #2? I have a hard time seeing JD take Wilson OR Fields.MAYBE Lance in which he sits for a yr..but that wont be a popular pick
Macagnan didn’t fail because he drafted BPA In the first round, he failed because he didn’t have an eye for talent and drafted poorly from second round onward. The Steelers drafted Antonio Brown who was considered the best WR in football at one time in the 6th round. That’s how a GM shows his ability, hitting on multiple draft picks after the easy ones in the first round. Do we trust that Joe D has done that and is he capable of doing it consistently?
not really. he's mostly operated from the shot gun and throws to wide open WRs or takes off running. he'll need to bulk up a little for the NFL. I think he needs to sit a year personally. still if we take him and he turns out like prescott i can't complain.
I think it's both, to be fair. 3 out of Mac's 5 first round picks are no longer on the team, and that will probably be 4/5 soon if Darnold is traded. That's absolutely abominable. Most teams have varied success with 2nd rounders and later. To miss on the first rounders is way more damaging because it's relatively worse than what the league average GM can do with first round picks.
I'd be ok with Lance sitting for a year while a vet is the QB in 2021. Chiefs did this with Mahomes and I think they're pleased with how that's worked out for them.
I think it's both, Red. Yes, Mac was a disaster after the second round, and hit on most of his 1st round picks, at least initially, but continually drafting DL because they were the BPA, and ignoring the OL, WR, CB, RB and Edge is as much a reason for his failing as his failure to find talent in rounds 2-7 imo.
Yeah the thing is, Mac was a historically bad GM. He didn't really do anything well. He wasn't even good in free agency either.
Just read a stat that Darnold was second in the league in QB pressures, just behind Josh Allen. Allen obviously having a way more productive year. Hurts my faith in Darnold a little, solidifies the broken argument but I still would like to see him with a new coach and better weapons, maybe he can build some semblance of confidence.
He's a checkdown machine. He doesn't see the field and when he does he's too scared to make the throw. It's time to move on, who knows when we will be in the position to get a QB again. This team shouldn't have the 2nd pick. If they took care of business at the end of the NE and Raiders game, they're picking outside of the top 5.
That is a huge part of our recent struggles. We've had big contract FA busts over and over again and don't get good value for our money. I hope JD can turn that around.
Gotta feel bad for Trask, his 3 best weapons quit on team to prepare for draft while Trask goes out and plays and hurts his draft stick with a bad performance throwing to unknowns that he has no time with.
I'd hardly call it missing on those picks. The only player of the 5 that's a clear bust is Darron Lee. Maccagnan was very bad but he hit on 3 out of 5 (granted they were easy selections) and Darnold is yet to be determined and was the consensus, correct selection. Williams and Adams moving on has more to do with JD wanting to rebuild the roster than them being underwhelming players. Mac was god awful in rounds 2-7 though. The only ones who have seemed to work out are Maye and Fatukasi.
Exactly! There’s a big difference between playing with inferior talent at wr and playing with inferior talent that you haven’t played with before. Insane to judge him on this game alone. Would still love to have Trask. Maybe we can grab him in the second round now.
