Sorry, I totally disagree. Coaching makes a HUGE amount of difference, both in terms of developing players, but in adapting systems to fit their talent on hand vs. trying to force square pegs into round holes, to game planning/strategy, to motivational and psychological handling of players, to being able to make adjustments in game. You couldn't be more wrong.
I read the opposite. Why does Douglas have to take out CJs trash? That looks cowardly for CJ. the right thing to do is for CJ to can Gase and then turn the reigns over to JD.
you are correct 100% Just watch the Knicks this year with a REAL coach they won’t win a title but they will be prepared and get better and learn and improve
Yay! We have another. In my eyes, Daboll is the way to go unless Cowher is legitimately available. I'm hoping to add Ken Dorsey also. He turned Cam Newton into a top tier QB at Carolina (and we've seen how he crashed without Dorsey) and now he's done the same with Allen. He's one of the best QB coaches in the business and ready to level up to OC. We all saw the film of Darnold at USC - fearless and attacking defenses downfield, unafraid to throw over the middle. THAT is my quarterback, and these two can bring that kid back to life.
You win with players. Guys who make it to the NFL know their stuff. No one out coaches others on a consistent basis. That's why the draft is so important. Any coach can put guys in place to make a play but the top players add something extra that can't be coached. i hope the Jets hire someone who the players respond to and can put together a good professional staff. But more important is the GM signing and drafting quality players.
I'm gonna disagree here. Of all the pro sports, football is the one where coaching has the greatest impact. The schemes over the past two years have been horrible and have not utilized the talent on the field. Sam was not a "game manager" coming out of college, he was a gunslinger. Many compared him to Farve but Gase tried to transform him into Brady 2.0, with quick, short passes and the occasional shot downfield. The scheme did not fit the player - that is 100% bad coaching. Case in point - every QB trotted out in the first several games last year looked identical (horrible) regardless of the name on their jersey.
You are sadly mistaken. I had the same discussion with a poster on the old NY Times Jets forum 20 years ago. He thought that all college players already knew all the technique and fundamentals they needed to know when they got to the NFL. Nothing is further from the truth. You obviously don't pay much attention to scouting reports, and analysis of draft prospects, and never played football or team sports yourself.. Yes, one needs talent, but raw talent alone won't do it. It must be developed and put into the proper system. Some coaches try to force players to fit their system when those players' talents and skills may not be a good fit (square pegs into round holes). Some players can play in any system, others cannot. Their talent only fits in one system or another. In games some coaches and teams always try to force their will upon the other team. Other coaches and teams take advantage of what the other team gives them. The difference shows up in wins vs losses, just as it does with great talent vs not so great talent. BOTH are important. Strategy is also part of the puzzle. Why do you think the phrase "Any given Sunday" came about. It's because sometimes a bad team like the Jets can beat a good team like the Rams with better game plans and execution. The Rams are a much more talented team. If that's all it took, the Rams would have won regardless of what the Jets did.
Huh? How is Douglas being able to hire the next HC taking out CJ's trash? It sounds like you're talking about firing Gase, NOT about hiring the next HC. Jilozzo and I were talking about hiring the new HC, NOT firing Gase. I believe that CJ will fire Gase. He has already talked to him and told those in the FO that Gase will be fired following Sunday's game.
Which makes sense. Gase was Chris Johnsons hire and unless something changes then Gase reports directly to the owner. With these rumors swirling about Douglas having final say in the next Jets hire I am a bit hopeful they will get it right this time. Perhaps the Johnsons have heard one too many times from the fans and media that they should let the GM hire his coach and are butting out this time. At least one can hope!
You may have another. I haven't definitely settled on Daboll, but he is my leading candidate at the moment. I think Arthur Smith and Matt Campbell, as well as Greg Roman and Eric Bieniemy belong in the conversation, and I hope that Douglas will interview all 5, but I think I want Daboll and Dorsey.
I never you don't need coaching but there has been great improvement by the young Jets. Obviously they have professions working with them. Game coaching is the hardest to qualify from the stands. There are always upsets in sports. That doesn't mean that the coaches are were smarter. Players play above and below their ability occasionally. But generally they play to their level. That's why the clubs with the most talent are in the playoffs every year.
Daboll seems like someone who truly proved he can develop a QB. The hardest trait to improve in QB is accuracy, and Allen started at very low 52.8, improving significantly every season to 69.1. If we get Daboll, I feel a lot better that Fields' and Wilson's weaknesses can be fixed. With Eric I am afraid we may be falling into the same trap as Gase. Yes, he was around a great QB in Mahomes, like Gase around Manning, but did it matter who was around these guys? The talent is so great, we don't really know if Eric can develop a QB or not. Unless maybe Mahomes calls the Jets? Oh wait...
Eric was there before Mahomes and I think Alex Smith was the QB, and he did fine. Still, the question looms, was it Bieniemy or Andy Reid? Also, Bieniemy has never called plays. That's a big red flag for me.
