the o-line was rebuilt and pretty awful outside of becton for the 1st half of the season. all his top WRs were out. he was throwing to guys who were cut mideason. sam also had a throwing shoulder injury and played through it for some dumb gase reason. it's taken 15 weeks but he's finally got all his WRs (which could improve in the offseason) and the o-line has gelled and played well and he beat 2 playoff teams. look how baker just played without his top WRs and missing 1 lineman. but people here still say he's great. we aren't as bad as people think. a new coaching staff will do wonders. we have young talent. out o-line is pretty solid now. we are 1 WR away form having a pretty legit group.
I like your post. Agree that Sam has not had much help at RB or WR. Case in point--Sam made a great escape during the Rams game and threw a long pass which Barrios basically dropped in the end zone--an NFL caliber WR would have caught it. Also, I think anybody other than Frank Gore running the ball might make opposing defenses move their safeties up/respect the run better. Only difference I have with you is that I would trade that #2 overall to the highest bidder. I read recently that the 49ers (and probably others) might offer a king's ransom to move up to take Wilson. Let 'em.
I have reservations about all 3. I'm leaning towards going with a vet for 2021 with an improved WR core(Crowder, Mims, FA signing, draft pick) and RB's(Adams, Johnson, Perine, draft pick) who aren't on the brink of retirement. Get the FQB in 2022, '23, or '24, but no later than that. This is what the Chiefs did during Reid's tenure. My opinion on the non Lawrence QB prospects is subject to change, but I believe Sam and the Jets need to part ways.
Yeah, great points. And I was fully for that with Trevor Lawrence coming to town. I said Sam was still worth a 1st Round pick, 2nd at worst. I stand by that. Some team would pay that. Now though, the Jets would be taking a much bigger risk going with Fields or Wilson. To be fair, any choice Joe Douglas makes will be risky now. Going with Sam, he continues to struggle, and then Fields or Wilson lights the NFL on fire on some other team, or they pick Wilson or Fields, they flop as Jets, and Sam goes on to be an NFL MVP elsewhere in a place like San Francisco. As a Darnold supporter, my worry is not "can he improve?" Of course he can. This season was all-time terrible and Gase is terrible. Sam will be better in 2021 where ever he is. My worry is "Will he ever be good enough to lead this team to the Super Bowl?" because that is all that matters to me. The answer to that is still unknown, but took a big step back in 2020.
I like Harris a LOT for the Jets, but I don't think he lasts very far into the draft and I think Douglas will use his first two picks on someone else besides a RB. I could be wrong though. I see Harris as a beefier version of McCaffery, and worth a high pick. I'm sure JD wouldn't do this, but if I traded back to around #10 I'd take Harris with that pick and then look for a stud OL with my next one.
I urge anyone to watch a contested Fields throw and clips of him..we might as well keep Darnold. Fields throws to wide open WR's but has no zip on his throw and not even a great decision making.
Understand why youd say this but I dont think its true. He can fit the ball in tight windows & has but the system doesnt ask him to do that very often & his WRs have dropped alot of those on him. Hes very accurate to deep portion of field both in pocket & on run & more importantly in RZ. If you’re accurate in RZ & its not just 50/50 balls odds are you dont have a ball placement problem.
I can agree with most of this at this point, but I really do want to see how Fields plays in the bowl games. Aside from that I'd rather take Najee Harris with that #12 pick than Pitts. Harris can be as dynamic as a RB and receiver as McCaffery is.
The nice thing about Lance is if you have the right coach, you can build a successful offense around his legs like the Saints with Hill or the Eagles with Hurts. And that's assuming Lance doesn't also become a good passer like Allen or Jackson. Put him on a team stacked with picks from trading down from 2, and we can win a lot of games.
Fields has a VERY strong arm. I dont think you'll find a single scout/coach etc say he doesnt have an above average arm
If you look further into the analytics and sheer numbers, they were still overall better than the past 2 years. Don’t let guys like Pat Elflein, Josh Andrews, or McDermitt take away the fact that McGovern has played much better, Van Rotten had a solid stretch before he was injured, and Fant has had good games and others he’s been inconsistent at. Overall, this line isn’t terrible by any means when they are all healthy. I place blame on the Qb this year on the many plays he has missed out on due to being off target or not seeing open receivers. I gave him a pass last 2 years because of the line but for the past 2 years, Sam has had games mixed in where he was excellent. He hasn’t had a single game all year like any of the games he has played great in both year 1 and year 2. You also just can’t solely give Sam a pass because the receiving core wasn’t at full strength all year. Even without Mims, the Qb was still flat missing receivers most of the year. After 20 years of bad QB play outside of Favre 1 year and Fitz 1 year, we as fans deserve better Qb play then what Sam has given us.
That's fine with me as long as the Jets get the guys they need to prime this offense. If the Jets aren't in the QB market, either Ja'Marr Chase or DeVonta Smith should be available somewhere between picks 3-10. If they get a mid first round pick by trading down maybe they can get Travis Etienne. However, I'm partial to big running backs who can wear down defenses. Najee Harris (230 lb) should be available in the late 1st round or Rhamondre Stevenson (245 lb) from Oklahoma should be available in the 2nd or third round. My mouth waters when I think of either of these two guys running left behind Becton. Don't think there's a defense who would be able to stop that combo.
You can do the same thing with Fields who has a better set of tools and has faced NFL like competition. The only case for Lance over Fields is you can move down the draft, collect more picks and still get Lance.
Maybe you are a shoulder specialist? CP has a torn rotator cuff and Wilson has a labrum problem. Are these the same?
Guys - we should keep Darnold. I was in favor of moving on if we were getting Trevor Lawrence since he'll likely be better than Sam and we'd reset the QB salary and have a bunch of years with a rookie QB on our cap. I don't see a QB option in this draft - other then Lawrence - that I would prefer other than Darnold + the high draft picks (or mult picks we'd get from a trade down.) What cannot be ignored is the Gase factor (poor coaching), lack of talent and injuries/sickness during Darnold's tenure here. I think it's worth the gamble to see if Darnold improves with a better team and coaching next year. I think he will be much better then we've seen so far (perhaps similar to how he flashed at the end of his first year.) We have plenty of cap - so if Sam pans out - we can easily sign him without adversely impacting other positions. This roster will be very young with a bunch of players on rookie contracts. It would be the most jet thing ever to trade Darnold for a 2nd (or worse) and draft a guy who's not going to amount to anything
LOLOL dude throws a little soft ball downfield with questionable decision making most importantly. Get real.
Pitts IMO is more of a game changer. kelce does a lot more for the KC offense then any RB does in the NFL. kittle is the SF offense. I feel pitts can be that type of TE
