the most hyped WR prospects last year were Jeudy, Lamb, Ruggs...the best one imo is Jefferson. All are gonna be good, do we need to use #2 to help upgrade the position... Also I like Chase, but he’s not a freak athlete, so maybe he won’t be quite as dominant as a pro vs college. I have no interest in a LBer unless they are a pass rushing specialist. Also not what you want to hear, but to be clear, much of what I am saying is not just my own thinking, but corresponds to what I’ve heard is the current Jets thinking... You can do your own research as this info is not hard to find. Sewell is the biggest generic freak in this draft. He’s a generational talent, so you either take him with pick #2, or you trade out... that’s pretty much what the Jets are thinking right now (again from what I’ve read).
I loved Jefferson last year. He was a close second to me after Lamb. I'm only a little surprised at the year he's had, and that's due to whom his QB is, not Jefferson. I think Lamb would have had a much better year if his QB hadn't gone down with a season-ending injury. I agree that ideally, #2 is too high to take Chase and maybe Parson, and one should either take a QB, Sewell, or trade down. Things aren't always ideal, however. I understand your having no interest in an ILB that high. I wouldn't either. Parsons started out as an Edge and then they moved him to MLB. He has a number of pass rush moves, and has been a great blitzer. He has great speed, range, and athleticism. I don't think he'd have any problems moving back to the edge and being a very good pass rusher. He can also drop into coverage, and is great vs the run, so he is multi-dimensional and not just a one-dimensional pass rusher. Even if he may be better as an ILB, if he would have the same impact as Jamal Adams in the middle of our D, would you not have any interest in him? You could be right and that be the Jets thinking. Remember, however, that no GM is going to come out this time of year and be honest about what he is thinking. He's not going to tip his hand like that. Sportswriters (as we all know) can and do make stuff up, or their source is a disgruntled employee/player, or it could be intentional misinformation accidentally "leaked out" to drum up interest in teams that need an LT to trade up for Sewell. If it is, JD's thinking, so be it. It would be understandable with Sewell being such a great OL prospect and JD being a former OL. It makes total sense. I'd be surprised if he wasn't leaning that way. Also remember that the new HC hasn't been hired yet, and he may see the situation very differently than JD. If the conspiracy theory posters are correct and Gase is back as HC, then that would probably change matters dramatically as well. In the end, however, I think the QB position, Sam's poor play and contract situation, the opportunity to re-set the cap with a rookie QB, and possible cap problems down the road, will outweigh JD's desire to add Sewell and make it work. If not, and he takes Sewell #2, I'll live with it. I trust JD's judgment. He'll be the one (along with the new HC) that has to deal with keeping both Becton and Sewell happy, the cap ramifications, and the career implications if he's wrong, Sam continues to struggle and one or more of the QBs in the 2021 draft go on to become very good QBs. At least he'll be addressing the offense, and trying to build around the QB position, and that will make me happy. If he and the new HC decide to roll with Sam, then I will root that I've been wrong about Sam, and that Sam will be able to be fixed here and fulfill his potential. After all, that ultimately would be what's best for the Jets. I'm not one of those fans who would rather be right myself and the team be wrong and suffer for it. I'd always rather be wrong and the team be right.
Thanks + good post. Just to be clear, I’m far from an anti Qb guy... I’m always looking at college qb tape and always think the Jets should be looking to add another Qb. For whatever reason, Im sort of ok with Darnold/Morgan and passing on a Qb at pick #2. Im not against another Qb being selected with another pick, but I’m not sold on any guy not named Lawrence right now... Will report back after today’s game... if Darnold plays crappy, I might come back and say take one at #2... LOL!
this means nothing - was Sam #3 pick good, was Sanchez #5 pick good? is Mayfield #1 pick good? if he turns out to be good then it is completely irrelevant where we take him (and there is already a lot of hype building around him so he won't last long)
Of course it matters. A guy picked at #2 overall needs to be a pro bowl player year after year. If he is not, it was not a good pick and there will be a player following him that we would have wished we drafted. Was Darnold pick #3 good? No. We could have had Nick Chubb, Josh Allen, or Lamar Jackson.
No, neither Sam nor Sanchez were good picks. I agree to some extent that if a player turns out to be good, it doesn't matter so much where he was taken. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was completely irrelevant, however. When you take a player in the top 5, he should be a great player, not just a good one. He should be a perennial Pro Bowler, if not All Pro. Also, one can get away occasionally reaching for a player, but if one makes a habit of it, one's team will not be very good, and a lot of draft capital will have been wasted. Value is important.
