You can't do that. That is totally unrealistic.

There is plenty of money to go around. So you don’t over pay at RB. Cowboys pay a million OL yet still are great at least on paper at RB and WR. And QB. It can be done. So the money Adams would have got eventually goes to Sewell. So don’t over pay at safety.

It’s not unrealistic at all. Half the publications have them doing that already. It’s very realistic. You ever look at tackles on other teams? The team that signed Conklin. We just played them today. Whose their other OL? Both making huge money. Why is it realistic for them? How about the Cowboys OL?

    Why is this realistic:

    • New Orleans Saints: LT Terron Armstead and RT Ryan Ramczyk. ...
    • Dallas Cowboys: LT Tyron Smith and RT La'el Collins. ...
    • Baltimore Ravens: LT Ronnie Stanley and RT Orlando Brown Jr. ...
    • Indianapolis Colts: LT Anthony Castonzo and RT Braden Smith. ...
    • Kansas City Chiefs: LT Eric Fisher and RT Mitchell Schwartz.

    • You ever look at the Colts OL?

Max I'm going to actually slightly challenge you on this. Heres my thoughts/questions/challenges.

    1) If you have to worry about paying 40m/y that means they are both top notch players and kicking ass.... there are worse problems to have out of your draft picks no?
    2) If they are kicking ass, protecting our QB, and bulldozing defenses out of the way for glorious Jets wins who the hell cares about paying them? I'm thinking of some of the utter waste we've put money to of late on the likes of Leveon and Trumaine Johnson.
    3) If JD and his lackey's analyze this draft class and Sewell rates that much higher than all the other players do we really want him picking a crappier player?
    4) This might be loser thinking but also that crappier player may well bust. Exciting WR types bust all the time in the NFL but platnium tackles in general and this kid in particular have almost 0% of being a bust. So that means worst case Ontario you are still getting a game changing impact offensive player. And the doomsday scenario is that he might be so effective you have to pay him?
    5) The other problem here is that just because you (by you I mean anybody... including me) would prefer to trade down for Chase/more picks doesn't mean some other team HAS to make a deal with you. There may simply be no offers to trade down although one would imagine there would be interest in Sewell.

Also kind of 3a, If the Jets front office picks Sewell its not like they don't know how to run their budget. If they pick him that means they aren't worried about paying both guys. And if they aren't worried about it, I'm certainly not going to lose a ton of sleep over it.

I don’t think many teams are going to want to trade up to #2 unless they’re desperate for a QB. I think Justin Fields is over rated. If JD wants to stay and take a QB he’ll probably opt to take Zack Wilson.

It’s not a good idea to take a LT this high the year after taking your starting LT. Even if Sewell were to make a switch to RT that’s going to be an awful lot of money invested in the tackle spots. One of them will probably have to be traded at the end of their rookie contracts. Besides Fant at RT is adequate for now - the Jets should draft an interior OL, not with #2 but maybe with Seattle’s pick.

As I wrote in another post it’s too bad Chase Young wasn’t available this year - he is a legit EDGE ( position of huge need ) and would of fit JD’s model of building through the trenches.

There is a big article today, Trent Dilfer saying a scout called him singing the praises of Fields and how the difference between him and Lawrence isn’t that big. Fields might have gone from a little overrated to a little underrated.

This is the point many miss. If the QBs on the list don’t quite pass the muster test we pass and move on. We don’t take a QB on a prayer and long shot.

We cannot discount amazing season Fields had last year. Very highly rated out of HS as well: http://www.espn.com/college-sports/...yerrankings/_/view/rn300/sort/rank/class/2018 . He did have two bad games this season, but they only played 6 games. Let's see how he does in play-offs, how he does at combine, how he measures, interviews, workout feedback, and I think chances are he will re-emerge himself as a lock for #2. He may be a lock for #2 as early as next week if he steps up for the Clemson game.

yes, we can discount the rest of the games when they were against shitty defenses and his dominant OL and running game gave him all day to throw to receivers who had no defenders even close by. Those two bad games were against teams with legit defenses. And he shit the bed.

The NFL will not give him all day to throw to wide open guys. I think he would suck here for us just like Sam has.

I will definitely be watching the playoffs but if he shows up in the playoffs like he did in these two games, then he is not worth the second pick...

NO- Terron Armstead 2013 3rd Round, $13/year extension in 2016. Ryan Ramczyk 2017 1st Round, still on rookie deal. Drafted 4 years apart.

BAL- Ronnie Stanley 2017 1st Round, $19.75/year extension in 2020. Orlando Brown Jr 2018 3rd Round, still on rookie deal. They will have to trade him, as they will not be able to afford to pay both.

IND- Anthony Castonzo 2011 1st Round, $16.5/year extension in 2020. Braden Smith 2018 2nd Round, still on rookie contract. Castonzo will probably retire by the time Smith’s extension comes into play.

    KC- Mitchell Schwartz 2012 2nd Round, $11.25/year extension in 2020. Eric Fisher 2013 1st Round, $12/year extension in 2016.

    DAL- Tyron Smith 2011 1st Round, $12.2/ year extension in 2014. La’el Collins UDFA 2015, $10/year extension in 2019.

Where do you see any teams spending first round picks in back to back years? Most are at least a few years apart, and have hit on 2nd or 3rd round picks. Having a good OL is important, but that would not be the way to build it.

We're going to take Sewell or trade down.

There are two players in the 2021 draft that have future All-Pro written all over them, Lawrence and Sewell, and the Jets are going to take the one that is there on the #2 pick. It's what you do with premium picks - take the guys that look like they have the game solved.

The last Polynesian OL from the northwest that the Jets had actually did go All-Pro several times and walked into the Hall of Fame after his career was done.

Interesting post, but didn't we have a similar situation in 2010 with the Brick / Mangold contracts? Weren't they the highest paid players at their positions at the same time? Not sure how a RT would compare to a C, but it seems like this can be done as long as they don't stupidly overpay in other places.

Go Ditka. All our 2021 and 2022 picks in a trade up with Jax.

if Trevor is generational, he’ll be cool throwing bombs to Lawrence Cager.

Was just going to post this.
And before we paid them their second contracts, we were paying Woody and Faneca.

You can definitely pay two Olineman sizable contracts. If they are the right players, it’s a good place to invest cap imo.
I’d rather spend capital at T then the interior positions as well, especially if the Tackles can play either side.

Has there ever been an opportunity for any team to draft back to back potential HOF all- pro, legitimate 10 year starter tackles?

I don’t remember any draft where the same team has had such opportunity.

It’s incredibly though. You also look at Wentz and Goff and you ask yourself would they make us that much better? Doubtful. QB is extremely hard. We just need to figure out if Zac Wilson has Mahomes like potential. I do think a slightly more mobile QB will help more. I also fear what the dolphins are doing. Building a excellent team around an average QB in Tua, which we got lucky they drafted. Wouldn’t surprise me if they went after Chase, Sewell, D Smith, Etienne, Najee etc.

We really need to hit on these draft picks. The question is do you want to pay Sam or restart the QB clock?
